Process safety management (PSM) regulations were developed by OSHA in response to major industrial accidents in 1984 and 1989 to protect workers and the public. PSM involves applying management systems and controls to manufacturing processes to identify and control process hazards. A PSM program should include elements like process safety information, process hazard analysis, operating procedures, and emergency response. The goal of an effective PSM program is to prevent injuries, incidents and protect nearby communities by operating facilities safely handling hazardous materials.
