Prosthesis are devices that replace missing body parts or improve the function of existing parts. They are made of materials like metal, titanium, stainless steel, ceramic, or plastic. Some prosthesis are cemented into place while others allow bone to grow into the implant. Regular physical therapy is needed after a joint replacement to restore motion and function. Prosthesis users should see a prosthetist every six months for checkups and do daily maintenance like washing the limb, checking for skin issues or pressure points, using sunscreen if exposed, and seeing a doctor right away if any infections occur.

2. DEFINATION
Prosthesis is a device designed to replace
a missing part of the body or to make a part of the
body work better. The replacement devices
sometimes referred to as prosthesis, are made of
metal, titanium, stainless steel, ceramic, plastic or
a combination of these materials. Some prosthesis
are held in place by acrylic cement or it can be
press fit, which allows bone to grow into the
implant. Once the joint replacement is in place, its
motion and function are restored through physical
therapy.

7. Care of prosthesis
Prosthesis should be reviewed and
checked by a prosthetist at least every six
months. In between clinic visits, get into a
daily maintenance routine.

8.  Skin care
1. wash limb with mild soap and water every
day and pat it dry with a soft towel. If it is not
done , will be at risk for fungal growth that
could lead to infection or abrasion.
2. check limb for red pressure patches.
3. check for skin breakdown twice a day .
4. softening cream should only be used if the
skin is extremely dry and at risk of cracking.
5. Do not use talcum powder, alcohol, unknown
chemicals/cream on limb.

9.  Remember limb is covered all the time,so be
very careful if you expose it to the sun. Use
sunscreen lotion.
 If having a fit problem with socket, causing
skin breakdown go to prosthetist for
adjustment. If breakdown is infected, need to
go to physician as well.
 If you have reduced or no sensation in residual
limb, check limb more frequently during the
day and don’t put it in hot water or expose it to
the sun- it will burn and blister.
