South Belridge U.S
This sharp increase happened due to steam flooding.
The South Belridge Oil Field is large in north-western Kern County, San
Joaquin Valley, California, about forty miles west of Bakersfield. Discovered
in 1911 and having a cumulative production of over 1,500 million barrels
(240,000,000 m3) of oil at the end of 2008, it is the fourth-largest oil field in
California, after the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, Kern River Oil Field, and
Wilmington Oil Field, and is the sixth-most productive field in the United
States. Its estimated remaining reserves, as of the end of 2008, were around
494 million barrels (78,500,000 m3), the second-largest in the state, and it
had 6,253 active wells. The principal operator on the field was Aera Energy
LLC, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil.
Additionally, the field included the only onshore wells in California owned
and operated by ExxonMobil.
General Information about the field
Steam injection is an increasingly common method of extracting heavy
crude oil. And this field contains such types of oils, so that is the reason
we apply this method to reduce the viscosity of the oil. Thus, we can
pump the oil easily. Generally, in this method, water is heated and
injected into the reservoir via an injection well.
Steam Generator
Heating the water or generating the steam
Purpose of using Solar Energy: to reduce the consumption of natural gas and
carbon footprint at its operations.
The enclosed trough technology used for the project is expected to reduce the
plant’s overall cost. The system uses three to five times lesser land and half the
amount of steel. Further, the technology utilises water produced from the field,
thereby reducing the need for fresh water.
• Belridge Solar is an enhanced oil recovery facility that is
currently being developed in the South Belridge Oil Field and,
when complete, will be California’s largest solar energy field.
It is a joint project between Aera Energy and GlassPoint Solar.
Belridge Solar
• Commonly, liquefied natural gas is burned to heat water to generate that
steam. With solar EOR, however, solar thermal energy is harnessed via a
parabolic trough enclosed in a greenhouse to create steam.
Technology
• Once completed, the facility is projected to produce 12 million
barrels of steam annually through an 850MW thermal solar steam
generator. It is planned to reduce the natural gas used at the Belridge
Oil Field to produce and extract heavy oil in its enhanced oil recovery
process (EOR).
• Additionally, a separate 26.5 MW electricity-generating facility using
photovoltaic panels is planned to power oilfield operations.
• The new facility is predicted to reduce carbon emissions by more
than 376,000 metric tons annually. This will offset more than one-
third of all the cars driven in Bakersfield. It is also expected to create
hundreds of jobs throughout California.
Impact
Process: “To enable the production, the water mixed with the oil in the ground, and
produced along with it, is separated and heated up in the parabolic trough collector
field. The steam is then reinjected into the ground to heat the heavy oil, so it’s easier
to pump to the surface,”
Solar Steam Generator
Generally, steam injection is the best fit for heavy oils that South
Belridge contains. So, they apply steam injection to decrease the
viscosity of the oil and consequently, the oil is pumped to the surface
more easily.
For this method, we need a steam generator that works with
electrical energy. And it is not cost-efficient. Also, another purpose is
to decrease carbon emissions. Aera Energy and Glass 'Point
collaborated on solar energy for steam flooding. They get energy from
the sun via solar panels. And transmit it to mechanical energy for use
in OTSG. Another advantage is that they do not need to use fresh
water, so they produce the water along with oil, again heating the
water and reinjecting it to the reservoir for this purpose.
