This document discusses heat management challenges for underground coal mines operating at greater depths. As mining depths increase, heat from rock temperature, machinery, and other sources makes working conditions uncomfortable. The Adriyala longwall coal mine project in India implemented an air cooling system using a 1200-ton refrigeration plant on the surface to deliver chilled air to the longwall face via a dedicated intake roadway. Psychrometric studies determined cooling was needed to maintain air temperatures below 33.5°C for worker productivity and safety. Different cooling system options are compared along with their advantages and limitations.
