Lightbridge Corporation is developing advanced nuclear fuel designs to improve reactor safety and economics. Their metallic fuel designs can be used in existing reactors to enable power uprates of 10% or higher without requiring changes to the reactors or refueling schedules. This increases reactor output while enhancing safety features such as lower operating temperatures and faster cooldown in accident scenarios. Lightbridge fuel is targeting initial commercialization in large US reactors starting in the early 2020s. It has the potential to generate hundreds of millions of dollars per year in royalty fees for Lightbridge if it captures a significant portion of the global reactor market.
