Visible Thinking

Visible thinking is a method that was created with the purpose of helping students
to reflect on their own thoughts.
These activity are associated with the following questions
 Form: How does it work?
 Function: How does it work?
 Connection: How is this like something I have seen before?
 Reflection: How do you know?

Visible thinking takes a flexible approach to the teaching and development of
thinking can be integrated, there are three ways of how we can start using visible
thinking

1. Routines:
We have to start with some easy routines as they are a visible accessible element
of thought, this helps students think and everyone on your point of view on any
particular situation, so we can see that it starts with a group discussion different
ways of thinking.
We have to be in mind that the routines must be focused on Truth Fairness,
Creativity and Understanding.
An example or visible thinking routine interpretation with justification could be:
What's going on? What do you see that makes you say that?
The purpose of this routine is to help students describe what they see or know and
asks them to build explanations and It promotes evidential reasoning (evidence-
based reasoning) and because it invites students to share their interpretations, it
encourages students to understand alternatives and multiple perspectives.
2. Ideal:
Another way to use visible thinking is to begin with thinking ideal that capture
naturally occurring goals, strivings, or interests that often propel our thinking; we
can say that this is a common sense concept and not a technical.
The ideals of thought that we should try to nurture and cultivate students are
understanding, truth, creativity and fairness, at this point the teacher can make
concept maps where students can choose an ideal and can reflect on it and then
share it with the other students in the classroom.

3. Documentation
The idea of documentation is closely linked with the idea of making thinking visible,
through the documentation of student thinking and learning, we develop our own
understanding of how to develop the thought processes and how best to support
them, in this sense, documentation is not just a reflective examination but also a
prospective one as it shapes the design of future learning situation.

Is important that as teacher, we have to review the documentation to make sense
of students’ ideas and thinking: What patterns emerge? What lines of thinking are
evident? What lines of inquiry and interest appear? Having come to some tentative
conclusions, you would then plan your next lesson on what you discovered.

Starting with documentation does not mean that you will not use or focus on the
other aspects of Visible Thinking. Indeed, you will probably use many of the
thinking routines and may even find you want to use the routines from one
particular Ideal as you begin. Starting with documentation merely means that this
will be where you place your initial energies and focus.

In the video they explain that Stephanie helps children make connections make
connection thoughts, mentions the need to physically perform an unlock of the
children thought that they really feel that if you are thinking
