Prohibition In The Early 20th Century
During the early 20th century, religious Christian churches were preaching that followers of Christ
needed to overcome corruption in the world. Religious organizations believed that alcohol was
morally corrupt people and was the causes of crime and spousal abuse. With the support of the Anti–
Saloon, Christian Organizations, and Women's movement groups the 18th amendment was passed in
1920. The consequentials of the prohibition was the emergence of mobs, crime increased, and
alcohol became more dangerous to consume. In 1933, prohibition ended as the results were the
opposite of what was expected.
The campaign to prohibit alcohol stemmed in Anglo–American culture for 2 centuries. In 1846,
Maine became the first state to outlaw the possession of alcohol. This key event lead the prohibition
and was the domino effect that was needed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was a lot of hatred against the Irish and Italians. They faced stereotypes of being barbaric,
criminals, uneducated, drunks, having a lot of kids, poor, and lazy similiar to the stereotypes of
Blacks today. American Protestants were in fear that they would corrupt the morale of the United
States and would put Protestant way of living at threat. There was a great Progressive movement
that emerged during this period and advocated the signing of the 18th amendment. To control the
immigrants Protestant Americans advocated Prohibition since it affected them the most. Drinking
alcohol was a past time that was generally enjoyed by immigrants and the working class. The
Churches were pushing for temperance, but weren't pushing for prohibition of alcohol. Temperance
organizations weren't receiving enough support so they decided to back their claim with science.
These studies found that alcohol raises blood pressure, causes heart diseases, and inhibits motor

Racial Stereotyping In The Early 20th Century
"Cartooning has always been informed by the tradition of caricature," [Wells, 1998, p.252] thus
leading animators creating a series of harrowing cartoons consisting an analysis of offensive racist
contents. This essay will demonstrate the intense racial stereotyping in the early 20th century but
mainly focusing on black caricaturing and seeing how it culturally changed with Disney, as it can be
argued that they are still stereotyping in their animations today. The stock characters of blackface
minstrelsy have played a significant role in disseminating racist images, attitudes and perceptions
worldwide. Every immigrant group was stereotyped on the music hall stage during the 19th Century,
but the history of prejudice, hostility, and ignorance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film was set in Norway in the 1840s, portraying the Sami culture of its time that were generally
people of white colour however, as it wasn't an animation that was wholly geographically nor
historically correct, although unintentional, it lacked a diverse cast. 'Frozen' use a non–diverse cast
but it is made for a modern, multi–ethnic audience. The film is already a fantasy and mystical
themed movie with lots of magic, a plethora of things that doesn't exist but non–white seem to come
in as though a non–realistic feature. Despite Disney conceiving an all–white cast to follow through
the Sami culture from the 1840s, it could have involved other races to avoid convolution towards
children, chiefly when it comes to purchasing merchandise. Disclaimers were created throughout the
1960s and although that might've been valuable in helping parents avoid problematic cartoons for
their children, disclaimers still couldn't realistically protect audiences from an endless range of
controversial content. It also questions how far distribution companies should go while guiding

The Struggle For Women In The Early 20th Century
"Women rights are human rights, and human rights are women's rights," (Hillary Clinton). The year
was 1648 at the time the law stated that anyone who owned land was permitted to vote, although
despite the fact that Margaret Brent was a landowner at the time she was denied the right to vote
simply because she was a women. It was 1848 when the battle for equal rights fighting to bring an
end to women's suffrage began. In 1870 the 15th amendment was passed which gave African
Americans the right to vote, this served as a realization to women that they were not being treated
equally. For decades in the early 20th century, women have been in a battle to gain equal rights for
self identity, which influenced them during times of war by leading them to gaining jobs, and during

dress less feminine to demonstrate their new found power. In 1947 the so called "clothing

began to lose the glamorous material and clothing and began to dress more masculine. (Glamor

fashion. They used fashion as a reminder that they ran the country during World War 2 and are
capable of more than men make it seem. Rosie the Riveter was one of the biggest female icons, she
was used in an attempt to attract women to the work force and it served to represent the massive
increase of about 65% working women during the war (History.com). Rosie the Riveter
demonstrated the power that women withheld during the countries time of need. Women during and

American Imperialism In The Early 20th Century
In 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair there was an exhibit funded by the US Government to show
Americans what life was like in the Philippine colonies. Unfortunate this exhibition was not
accurate representation of people's lives in the Philippines. They were portrayed as being uncivilized
and practitioners of non–God fearing religions, even though many Philippine people converted
Roman Catholicism under Spanish rule. The Government conveyed a distorted representation of the
Philippines to convince Americans that the colonization of the Philippines was not just for the
United States benefit but for the improvement and civilization of the population of the Philippines.
While there are many reasons behind the United States imperialist endeavors in the early 20th
century, the main justifications were wealth, religion, recognition, and science. Before the 20th
century Americans business believed Americas, economy could survive while being self–sufficient
and did not require any international interaction. But after facing multiple economic depressions in
the late 1th century they came to the realization that interaction in the world's economy could benefit
them economically. After they came to this realization they turned to the United States government
to protect their economic interests abroad, even going as far to use military force if necessary. ...

Oralism In The Early 20th Century
In France, the United States, and some other countries, instruction and communication were carried
out in various sign languages, while in Britain, Germany, and elsewhere in northern Europe oralism
(speech and lipreading) dominated. These schools' graduates formed local and national deaf
communities. For example, deaf Swedes founded the Stockholm Deaf Club in 1868. In the mid 19th
century school alumni in the United States, who communicated in the American Sign Language
(ASL) they had developed, established newspapers, churches, and social clubs. During the late 19th
and early 20th centuries an aggressive oralist movement challenged sign languages everywhere.
Resisting oralism, the American deaf community formed state political associations and, in 1880,
founded the National Association of the Deaf. Deaf advocates fought the revamping of education
and defended ASL.

Morality In The Early 20th Century
Indeed, the early twentieth century started with an innumerable amount of excitement for progress
from the scientific and moral advancements of human society. Many thinkers coming into the new
century had abandoned the concept of an external moral law which governed their behavior. The
abandonment of the moral law originated from the intellectual questioning of its exists and it claim
on one's behavior (Glover, 2012, p. 1). As the authority of religion and belief in God began to
diminish (Glover, 2012, p. 1), many individuals began to embrace reason–based morality influenced
by the Enlightenment period. However, the Enlightenment idea of human reasoning to guide
morality became obsolete as cruelty, barbarism, and death remained prominent throughout the
century (Glover, 2012, p. 7). Indefinitely, the reasons behind the casualties were not related to the

261). Within this moral identity, there are moral resources that include psychological responses such
as sympathy or respect towards others that governs how an individual acts (Glover, 2012, p 22–23).
The tendency for individuals to act on these responses signifies that humans have deeply rooted
psychological disposition separate from any societal influence to act humanely (Gaspar, slide 2).
The weakening of these psychological responses can result in the eradication of an individual's
moral identity making them susceptible to acting inhumanely. Consequently, the erosion of one's
moral identity is precisely what happened during the twentieth century that lead to the carnality of
war seen throughout the century. The essence of moral identity was removed through the
desensitization and resocialization of a certain social group to override their moral responses to act
inhumanely; this known as the Moral Psychology of Waging

Psychology In The Early 20th Century
In the early twentieth century, social reformers planned to use the education system to regenerate
democracy and to reconstruct the self–political responsibility that everyone held. But to do so, a new
faith in science, numbers, and technology had to be accepted. Science helps solve social problems
and the making of a more solid social policy. During this time period, education and science had to
become closely associated to make this reformation possible. "The Science that had the most
profound effect on educational practice was psychology..."(Fass 307) Psychology was a significant
way of measuring mental capacity. It was very helpful when tests that calculate mental capacity

The Rise Of The Late And Early 20th Century
The period surrounding the late and early 20th century was the most dramatic era in modern history.
It was a period where Western ideals were pushed by motivated empires with ambitions of wealth
and expanding territory and, while impossible to distinguish the most influencing factor that led to
the Westernization of nations on a global scale, it is easy to determine key points that played
important roles in world history. With Western cultures emerging with both technological and
military advantage over secluded and obsolete empires, it was only a matter of time before the West
inspired and impacted subjugated nations to build an empire of their own. Countries such as Japan,
Russia, as well as Europe's scramble for Africa are prime examples of existing legacies from the
imperialistic era of the late 19th century and onto the early 20th century. A balance of imperial
expansion and their eventual collapse were the key components utilized by Western nations to
modernize and westernize the world between the periods of 1850 and 1950. Perhaps the most
dramatic example of a country highly influenced by Western ideals was Japan in the early 20th
Century. Initially, Japan faced severe social issues, primarily with crop failure, economic turmoil,
and a rising merchant class in the late 19th century under the Tokugawa rule. To further exacerbate
domestic issues, Japan was also under pressure from European nations who wanted to open trade
ports in Japan. These demands were

both at home and in work. Automobiles, home appliances, and entertainment changed how
Americans spent their time and money. During the early to mid–20th century America went through
an economical depression, two wars, and recessions, this caused many Americans to go through
stages of poverty, fear, and wealth. The advancement of technology did not come without downfalls
including pollution, debt, and change in moral beliefs. In 1903 the Ford Motor Company was

Safety regulations were not originally in use when automobiles were first on the road which led to
the invention of traffic lights, "cat's eyes," and painting of lines in the road to assist drivers. Vehicles
have come a long way since their introduction into American society and they continue to change as
newer technology grows. At the turn of the century many homes were cleaned by hand, food was
prepared in stoves, and children played in sitting rooms or outside. Technology allowed for changes
to be made in the home over the course of just a few years with the introduction of toasters,
refrigerators, televisions, and vacuum cleaners. Cooking for the household became easier with the
advancements of gas and eventually electric ranges. Busch describes how the shift from gas range to
electric range was beneficial as the units were smaller allowing more space in the kitchen, there was
better temperature control, and "oven heat control and exterior coolness since older gas ranges
lacked oven thermostats and insulation." Refrigerators had been around for years, but were large and
took up much of the room in a kitchen. Isenstadt states, "Electric refrigerators in the 1920s and
1930s were seen as a large step toward modernization of the home." Shortly after this time
customization of refrigerators became popular and with advances in the electrical components
involved the units became smaller. In 1908 advertisements became popular for upright vacuum

Cocaine In The Early 20th Century Essay

Research Paper
Cocaine Hydrochloride in the early 20th century was used in many ways. Some may say that small
doses were added to the drink Coca Cola, that's where the name come from. I feel as if this is true
because Coca Cola is slightly addictive. The original formula of coca cola did have 25mg of cocaine
per 100ml of drink. That formula was used as a stimulant for headaches. Cocaine Hydrochloride was
an ingredient in patent medicines, tonics, elixirs, and fluid extracts. With the right amount it could
save and cure you but if you were given more than needed you would get addicted. Doctors knew
what would happen to a patient if they were given to much therefore they created something called
the Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914.
The Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914 was made and passed to put a restriction on the legal use of the
cocaine. This was made because once the patient was cured and well their body was still craving the
drug. In the 1930's the cocaine demand was lower because with this act and the creation of
amphetamine. There were still a few people doing cocaine for recreation use. The Harrison Narcotic
Act of 1914 was starting to fail in the 60's as the use of cocaine started to increase again. This time
people were not using it to get well. They were using it as recreation then they was going back to
their normal lives. It's almost like people use using it as a hobby therefore it was labeled harmless. It

Introduction
America has a very rich history when it comes to domestic policies, socioeconomic conditions and
culture. The domestic policies, socioeconomics conditions and culture affect all aspect of American
peoples' lives. They shape and define the people identity. However, as world progressed these
factors of life began to change taking the modernity culture and some of them began taking different
aspects. Despite that fact, there are correlations that exist between the current American domestic
policies, socioeconomic conditions, and culture with the early 20th Century American involvement
overseas. The essay will take a look at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Culture is one of the diverse and quick changing phenomena. The American culture has been
changing with time. However, despite the change and evolution of the culture, the rich elements of
the culture have been passed through the generations (Colby, 597). In late 19th Century and early
20th Century the American culture was more concrete and focused on ethnicity background. The
whites, the blacks, the natives, and the Latinos all brought their culture in their lives. The American
people then tried to incorporate these cultures which by mid 20th century became synonymous with
the American people. The blend of these cultures became rich and inspiring. During the time, the
American became so much involved in overseas activities. In that way the American culture began
to spread (power of persuasion, 7). Looking back at the time and the current times, the culture can
be stated as relatively correlated. America is currently involved actively in overseas activities. The
American culture is still blended just like the culture of the late19th Century and early 20th Century.
American culture still influences other cultures in the world because America has a strong
involvement in overseas activities.
Conclusion
Domestic policies, socioeconomics conditions, and culture at the present times are correlated with
the same aspect as the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The only changes that have
occurred between the times are

Medical Care In The Early 20th Century
"War is the only proper school for a surgeon" – Hippocrates. That would be the case in the early
20th century. The early 20th century is commonly associated with war, blood shed and conflict.
During this time is when lots of people died. People died due to many things; war or battle, lack of
medical care, or even due to an epidemic. Medical care was rough back then, the shortage of doctors
and the lack of medical facilities made the death toll higher. Today, we see less people die due to
epidemics, lack of medical care and even less due to battle. Thats all possible because medical care
during the 20th century is very different from today, given that today we have better facilities, more
doctors, and more advanced technology. In the battlefield, people were getting hit with bullets, IED

were brought far enough beyond the lines of battle. They were then transported by horse or cart, and
sometimes by motorized ambulance, when available.[2] These men would be moved until they
reached a location where they could receive treatment for their injury. Just like today, there were
hospitals available, but back then, they were mostly set up in abandoned buildings or any available
unoccupied buildings. However, for more serious injuries requiring emergency care, Casualty
Clearing Stations were set up in tents. Here surgeries were often performed. In the early 20th
century, medical utensils were limited, resulting in the use of guilotines for the amputation of limbs.

An Overview of Britain in the Early 20th Century Essay
An Overview of Britain in the Early 20th Century
During the early 20th century in Britain, lives for everyone changed dramatically. The population
levels increased. From 1901 – 1911 the population increased from 42 million to 45 million. This
meant there was an increase in birth and a decrease in death rates.
There were very distinct social divisions. At the top were the upper and upper middle classes. They
earned above £700 a year. They were only 3% of the population yet they earned most the country's
wages. They usually went to public school when young then went onto university. Most would then
join the army. Many went abroad during winter and the London house for the ball season in May.

The working class would get around £50–100 a year. They lived in very small terraced houses
cramped with lots of people. They worked around 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday and six
and a half on Saturday. They had no holidays and small innutritious meals which meant they died
younger. The children would go to work after school and stay in the factory most of their life.
The most popular jobs were domestic, agricultural and in the building trade. The women were the
lowest paid of them all and most worked in the domestic service. The Daily Mail was the cheapest
newspaper at ½ pence.
In those days, Britain was a parliamentary democracy but the House of Lords could block decisions
made by the House of Commons. The system was unfair in that only a few people could vote. By
1906, all men with households could vote but the women couldn't. There were two main parties, the
liberals and the Conservatives. They were mostly supported by richer people. The conservatives
believed in laissez faire, where they leave people to their own problems. The Conservatives believed
that they should leave the rich people to get on with making Britain richer.
The Liberals believed in freedom of the individual and that you had to work hard if you wanted to
be wealthy. This meant that the rich then looked down on the poor as they believed it was their own

Early 20th Century Dehumanization Through Theatrical Plays...

Early 20th–Century Dehumanization through Theatrical Plays and Cinema
The early 20th century was a time for a booming economy and American prosperity. During this
time, the America we know and love/hate today came into power. The emergence of a 'middle class'
of Americans came from this time due to the jobs provided by factories and the formation of unions
to keep some workplaces in check. From the introduction of the automobile to lower– and middle–
class Americans for everyday use, to the harnessing of electricity and oil as power sources for
everyday objects and tools, the early 20th century has revolutionized the American way of life to
this day.
However, with great advancements in society and technology come the great costs associated with
them. Take for example WWI, otherwise known as 'The Great War'. According to The History
Learning Site, a whopping 8.5 million soldiers were killed and 21 million were wounded in this war.
Up to this point, these numbers were completely unheard of. But thanks to these great advancements
in technology, these numbers were easily obtainable, rendering the human component of war
practically useless. This was the first major real–life instance of a theme frequently used in the 20th
century: dehumanization.
This theme is especially expressed through the art of the time, where new advancements lead to new
thoughts about humanity and the role the common man plays in this new, perhaps alien

The Importance of Immigration to the Canadian Economy in...
In the early decades of the 20th century, over one in five people living in Canada were immigrants.
As immigrants were introduced to the freshly structured land and economy of Canada it began to
show that immigration was essential to the financial structure of Canada. Some of the reasons that
immigration was important to the Canadian economy in the early 20th century is that it prevented
American expansion, Railway Business benefited from providing service to western Canada,
immigrants started new businesses in Canada and industrialization and urbanization.
Even though birth rates were higher than immigration rates in the early 20th century immigration
was still very important to the Canadian economy because since approximately 180,000 people
immigrated to Canada during the time periods of 1900–1910 and each of those immigrants received
160 acres of land in western Canada it stopped the possibility of America expansion because
western Canada was beginning to become colonized which boosted the economy because Canada
has one of the world's largest supply of natural resources such as metals, lumber and oil and in order
for those resources to be not only discovered but to be put to use Canada needed workers but it had a
very low birthrate compared to the other country's therefore immigration was need to put Canada's
resources to use and start internationals trade and to boost the economy and without immigration the
birth rate would stay low also "Economic activity in Canada is

The Role Of The Government In The Early 20th Century
During the late 19th, early 20th century, the federal government began to grow because the
American public wanted reform and they believed that the government was the best way to ensure
this reform. This expanded power of the government was good as it helped immigrants, women, and
people of color gain freedom and by protecting them from the harshness of the industrialized
society. Around the early 1900's, concern for child and women labor grew throughout the American
public. In the factories, women faced discrimination as employers would usually pay woman about

Progressivism In The Early 20th Century
1. When dealing with economic growth due to transportation from 1860 to 1900 there isn't just one
form of transportation you can put as the reason for success. There were many contributions from
railroads, canals, other waterways, and roads that boosted the economy upward. The growth of
railroads and roads were growing at an incredible rate at the time. The production of these things
provided jobs, created a bigger market for the railroad and car industries, and caused the travel of
people and transportation of goods to enhance.
Although the car industry was taking the country by storm between 1871 and 1900 the track laid

Early 20th Century Essay
From the mid–19th century to the early 20th century, specifically from 1865 to 1915, America was
changing from an agricultural society to an urban one. People were starting to move to the West and
gender and racial inequality were increasing social issues. These, among other historical events
influenced literary styles of the era such as realism, naturalism, frontier realism, regionalism and
African American literature. Writers like Mark Twain, Jack London and W.E.B. Du Bois thrived in
their writing during this era and captured perfectly what the people could relate to.
The growth of cities in America increased substantially during the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Numbers of immigrants reached up to 2 million arriving in the United States. The bulk of
immigrants during this time came from Italy with a whopping number of 4,600,000 people, even
though, nine percent of Norway's population emigrated to America in the 1880s. In fact, most of the
immigrants came from Europe with the exception of some Canadians. During this time there were a
lot of gold seekers called "forty–niners", also a big reason for the expansion taking place. Even

Early 20th Century Arts
The early 20th–century arts may influence many people in 2016, but I am not one of those people. I
can go on and say that these 20th century arts have not influenced me in any way, but what good is
that? I suppose these arts could have influenced others because in order to advance we have to start
somewhere. Many 20th century arts are that starting point... yikes... but we can learn and be more
innovative from that starting point... but what good is that? 20th century art is a foundation of art we
see today... even fashion... unfortunately. We all have to start somewhere. Taking a look at the
fashion side of the 20th century arts we can see that it was a small world. In concrete we can see a
famous art piece–Mondrian–famous in the sense that my sim could paint it in the original "The
Sims" computer game, you could say that painting is well known. Obviously someone thought the
Mondrian art piece was absolutely stunning they HAD to put it on clothing, and then the Mondrian
Day Dress was born in 1965... thanks Yves Saint Laurent. Would I wear the Mondrian Day Dress?
No, that thing is hideous, but I'm sure out of the entire worlds population someone was destined to
buy it. Sticking with fashion, two years later in 1967 the Metal Plates Dress was produced! I have

In the early 20th century it was called art, in 2016 it's called nudes. The early 20th century art has set
the foundation of nudes, we have advanced so much that we no longer call it art, we call it porn. In
2016 we don't have to paint naked bodies, we can just take pictures with our cellphones... and even
cameras if people still have those. In the early 20th century people expressed the beauty and art of a
naked body, because that's what it was back then, art. In 2016 our perverted mines have shifted the
naked body from art to pornography. Way to go 21st

What Did It Mean to Be Modern in Early 20th Century East...
What did it mean to be modern in early twentieth century East Asia? In the early 20th century, East
Asia went through a process of modernisation to cope with the challenges brought by the Western
powers. This process of modernisation was characterised by numerous features, ranging from
military, political, economic, industrial and technological reforms to changes in the legal,
administration, diplomatic as well as education and women. There were long term socio–political
and cultural impacts which shaped the modern East Asia in the early 20th century. While
modernisation was in no way equivalent to Westernisation, many in the early 20th century saw the
West as a model for modernisation. Modernisation in East Asia was thus more often ... Show more

World War One gave China's businesses and industries a chance to flourish. Britain, France,
Germany and Russia were preoccupied with what was happening in Europe and no longer had spare
goods to export. Imports from the West thus dropped dramatically, giving Chinese manufacturers a
chance to sell more profitably. At the same time, the demand for products from China increased
dramatically, giving Chinese manufacturers a chance to sell more profitably. At the same time, the
demand for products from china increased helping china's export industries. The number of Chinese
textile mills increased from 22 in 1911 to 109 in 1921. Tonnage of coal produced grew from 13 to
20 million tons between 1913 and 1919. Modern banking took off: between 1912 and 1923, the
number of modern banks increased from 7 to 31. Telephone and electric companies were formed not
only in major cities but also in county seats and even in market towns. New fortunes were made. For
instance, the Rong brothers from a family of merchants in Wuxi built a flour mill in 1901 and
another in 1913. As opportunities opened up, they built eight new factories between 1914 and 1920
expanding into textiles. Therefore, like Japan and Korea, modernisation for China

What Is The Role Of American Women In The Early 20th Century
Before the 20th century, the constrictions of the private sphere limited the roles of American women
to those that related to domesticity. These roles included child bearing, rearing, cleaning, cooking,
and tending to their husbands. This meant that women tended to set aside their hopes and dreams for
a future that would extend beyond their lives of domesticity in order to focus solely on their home
life. However, at the beginning of the 20th century women took it upon themselves to move away
from the private sphere as they began to challenge their traditional roles. Consequently, women
became increasingly involved in the public sphere fighting for various significant causes and aiding
to their movement as strikers, suffragists, and protesters. The photographs portray distinct groups of
early 20th century American women in their struggle to transition from the private sphere into the
public sphere with each group of women participating and contributing to this movement in
different ways.
At the beginning of the 20th century, different groups of American women from diverse
socioeconomic backgrounds entered the public sphere and did so by protesting against various
injustices. Each group of women decided to take to the streets as a result of these injustices and in
order to accomplish their objectives. To begin with, working–class women, mostly young immigrant
women, decided to take to the streets to strike primarily in regards to the low salaries as well as the

Late 19th And Early 20th Century
In today's society an individual can travel to cities all over the world and experience different
technological innovations in various forms. Skyscrapers, highway systems, and suspension bridges
are all forms of innovation that, through the help of engineering and complex technological systems,
can be observed in nearly every city around the world. These technological innovations have
allowed sprawling urban environments to become the definition of a developed country, despite
their infamous reputation for loud noises, traffic, and decreased air quality. Seen and unseen forces
such as organization of labor and an expanded industry base gave rise to these urban centers through
thoughtful planning and execution. In order for great American cities to form, a technological
system must be in place. This system must incorporate a dedicated workforce that acknowledges
diversification of labor. The Lowell Mills from the late 19th and early 20th centuries represent a
system that allows economic prosperity through production (Hindle, 186). A very streamlined work
flow emanated from intangible factors such as boarding houses and management that ensured
employees worked together in tandem (Hindle, 187). This system ... Show more content on

Structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chicago Life Bridge were all products of carefully
executed plans to promote trade. This economic system was backed by both visible forces such as
the construction that went into the structures, and invisible forces such as the technologies of trade
and diversification of labor. The growth of these modern cities is no coincidence, as governmental
systems recognized that the future of a city is entirely dependent on its economic capability. This
drive for economic success has led to New York becoming the largest regional economy in the

Colonialism In The Early 20th Century
Colonialism, as described by Stam and Louise Spence is when European powers reached a state of
total control over areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Existing since the 16th century but
Reaching its industrialized height in the early 20th century colonialism began to decline after World
War I. There are still many areas still colonized by European powers including Puerto Rico, The
Falklands, Guam and Gibraltar. These areas are still exploited without repercussion and have limited
to no rights, especially indigenous islanders. Although these are examples of extreme direct control,
through alliances and treaties, European powers still exert control over former colonies, and

Catholic Discrimination In The Early 20th Century
Catholics have suffered discrimination in the early 20th century for many different reasons, such as
the Spanish war to their beliefs on birth control. Not all Catholics hold every belief that they are
discriminated against for. This is similar to Muslims who have only been discriminated against
because people think they are extremists or terrorists. There are very few Absolutists, which are
people who believe one hundred percent with a certain groups believes, in America. However,
discrimination does not have a lens to see who is an absolutist or not. Certain prejudice toward
Catholics and today Muslims are completely irrational and unjustified. Catholics were discriminated

He says that, "The growing strength and assertiveness of American Catholics took on a more

a matter not of being presumptuous or aggressive but of asserting the legitimate claims of a large
group of Americans who were no longer willing to be told by others how they should behave." From
the discrimination occurring throughout history, one must observe how they can deal with prejudice

technology, naval, and agricultural industries, at the time, in comparison with the west, and how it
affected China's position in the world throughout the 19th and early 20th century. Why didn't
China's technological achievements propel it to become a global power in the later half of the
millennia (before 1950). One interesting example is the comparison between Christopher
Columbus's expedition vessel versus the Chinese Navies Zheng He "treasures ships". For many
centuries, the Chinese had had reached, and were operating at the pinnacle of technological
achievement at the time. This leads the question – if Zheng He/s exploration efforts had not

America In The Early 20th Century
During the early 1900's the United States was already familiar with sending their troops overseas to
claim new territory. America has never been afraid to show authority and invade land, it's a tactic the
United States government has perfected over the past 120 years. When the U.S. sees other nations
becoming empires they want to join in on the action. Any government that takes overseas possession
has an obligation to the people but it doesn't always go as planned. When a country gains power and
becomes a world superpower no one can stop them from conquering territory. History as we know it
would all change on February 20, 1896 when Senator Henry Cabot Lodge called for the United
States to intervene in a rebellion happening in Cuba. This brought up a lot of controversy on what
we should do as a country. One side argued that it was necessary for the U.S. as a nation to show off

The U.S. had the responsibility of supporting Puerto Rico and their citizens. America agreed to rule
the island as a territory, much like Samoa or the Philippines for that matter. The Foraker Act of 1900
established that Puerto Rico's governor and their upper house of legislature was to be appointed by
the United States. The Puerto Ricans were only allowed to elect a lower house of legislature.
Americans infringed on their rights without the approval of the citizens of Puerto Rico who did not
have the right to simply vote on the matter. The dependence Puerto Rico has had on the U.S. would
later become their downfall. It wasn't until the transition to commonwealth in the late 1940's that
laws would change. Even today the vast majority of their citizens have voted for their independence
from the U.S. because of their lack of support. The people of Puerto Rico have been hoping to

Progressivism In The 19th And Early 20th Century
Progressivism started in the late 19th and early 20th century. Progressivist believed that to fix
modern problems, the old ways and ideas needed to be tossed out the window and that minds should
become more open. This mostly had to do with topics of the government. Progressivist were found
on both sides of the political rim with Woodrow Wilson being a Democrat and Teddy Roosevelt
being a Republican. "The Progressives were united in their contempt for what they called the
"individualism" of the Founding. Instead of a government that protects natural rights through
limited, decentralized powers, they envisioned an expansive government, a "living" and evolving
Constitution, and the rule of "experts" in nationally centralized administrative agencies."

The Great Migration In The Early 20th Century
A black women by the name of Isabel Wilkerson, once stated some very influential words of
wisdom to express her feelings toward the Great Migration. She stated,
"Well, I'm a daughter of the great migration as, really, the majority of African Americans that you
meet in the north and west are products of the great migration. It's that massive. Many of us owe our
very existence to the fact that people migrated"(Wilkerson).
The Great Migration had such a tremendous impact on black culture in the early 20th century. The
horrific Reconstruction era sadly had to occur first in order for blacks to migrate, but it overall had a
great effect for later years, such as today. Not only did the Reconstruction force blacks to leave, but

Oppression in the Early 20th Century
Feminism means the belief that women should be treated as equals to men. In the early 20th century,
women faced adversity in the sense that it was a struggle living at that time because they had a
specific role to live up to, and that role was being housewives to the men. The early 20th Century
was a male dominated society. Glaspell uses character names, Irony in the title, and symbolism in
the play, "Trifles" to reveal the roles in which women play, and the harm it brings to women and
also men in the early 20th Century. In the play, there are two characters that are never seen, Mr. and
Mrs. Wright. Mr. Wright plays off the social stereotype that women always seek for "Mr. Right". Mr.

Mrs. Hale says, "Just to pass the time of day with him [John]... [Was] Like a raw wind that gets to

the bird. She possibly treated the bird as her child, singing to it and caring for it. She was devastated
to have seen the birds' neck wrung the way it was. She must have mourned the death of the bird the
same as the death of a child. Mrs. Hale describes Minnie Foster as, "kind of like a bird herself ––
real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and – fluttery"(Susan Glaspell, 22). When Mrs. Hale and
Mrs. Peters find Minnie's birdcage in the cupboard, they do not realize the importance of it until
they find the dead bird with its neck "wrung" (Susan Glaspell, 23). Mrs. Hale says to Mrs. Peters,
"No, Wright wouldn't like the bird –– a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too"

"Summer" and John Steinbeck' s "The Chrysanthemums" show two
characters (both of them women) struggling between society's rules and laws and their own believes

Cynthia Bily, who wrote a critical essay on Summer says, "At the Jewelry store, where she

she does." Charity chooses the brooch that represents her. This, however, not only shows
Charity admiration and love for nature, but Harney's ability to "buy" Charity's attention
and eventually sexual intimacy. The Brooch place an important part in the story. She carriers the
brooch everywhere and when she had to give it away, she goes back to the doctor's office and gets it
back.
Steinbeck also makes nature a very important part of his story. "Worn, Damaged bodies in Literature

that "one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and

of other national tendencies that had an impact on world history. Nationalism was the most
important and impactful ideology during the early twentieth century Europe. Nevertheless, there was
also the conservatism movement during the nineteenth century that had influence over Europe for
years.

One of those movements was based in the German Empire with the idea of Pan–Germanism and it
was heavily supported with German militarism, the idea that "the state of the nation was defined and
reflected by the strength of its military forces" (Alpha History). Even known there were many other
nationalist movements, none of them had a greater impact and responsibility for starting the Great
War than the Slavic groups. These groups all shared Pan–Slavism which is "the belief that the Slavic
peoples of eastern Europe should have their own nation, was a powerful force in the region" (Alpha
History). Serbia had the most nationalists within the Balkans region because it rejected Austrian–
Hungarian influence and rule over their lands. As the result, the infamous nationalist group, Black

world war lasted four years until the German Empire signed an armistice to the Entente in 1918.
Afterwards, the Entente (especially France) heavily punished the German Empire by demanding

Many people say the United States is a melting pot of different races. These immigrants of different
races moved to reside in the United States for a range of differing reasons. But the truth to the matter
is that these immigrants suffered many hardships after moving to the United States. There may be
both reasons for immigrants to leave their country and reasons for immigrants to come to America,
but residing in America comes with its hardships. Push factors have caused foreigners to look
forward to move to another country to reside in. Leaving a country is the best way to escape and flee

Many reasons pulled foreigners to America. Louise Nagy, a Polish immigrant in 1913, describes the
many rumors spread about America. She tells of the rumor, "Gold on the streets of America." Nagy
says that you could have any occupation in America and still make decent earnings. In April 28,
1880, a caricature named, "Welcome to All!" by J. Keppler in Puck Magazine, describes some of the
many reasons why foreigners would immigrate to America out of all countries. In America, there are
no heavy taxes, and no demanding kings–America is a democracy. As in America, there is no
compulsory military service, people were not forced to serve in the military. In America, there was
no domestic punishment or torture using knouts and dungeons. As shown in the sign of the
caricature, there was free education, free land, free speech, free ballot, and free lunch in America. In
America there are many freedoms protected by the Bill of Rights, unlike many foreign countries.
Immigrants may want to migrate to the United States because here, you can freely practice any
religion without persecution, as it was recognized in America that religion and government are two
different entities. The many human rights guaranteed by America pulled and attracted many

standards. Most countries were concerned with more pressing diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid,
and tuberculosis. But scientist believe that these diseases had connection to why polio became so
widespread.. Countries were so focused on cleaning the water supply to avoid these diseases that
they might have taken away anti–bodies that young infants needed to prevent polio. Polio can be

Prohibition In The Early 20Th Century

  • 1. Prohibition In The Early 20th Century During the early 20th century, religious Christian churches were preaching that followers of Christ needed to overcome corruption in the world. Religious organizations believed that alcohol was morally corrupt people and was the causes of crime and spousal abuse. With the support of the Anti– Saloon, Christian Organizations, and Women's movement groups the 18th amendment was passed in 1920. The consequentials of the prohibition was the emergence of mobs, crime increased, and alcohol became more dangerous to consume. In 1933, prohibition ended as the results were the opposite of what was expected. The campaign to prohibit alcohol stemmed in Anglo–American culture for 2 centuries. In 1846, Maine became the first state to outlaw the possession of alcohol. This key event lead the prohibition and was the domino effect that was needed to ... They faced stereotypes of being barbaric, criminals, uneducated, drunks, having a lot of kids, poor, and lazy similiar to the stereotypes of Blacks today. American Protestants were in fear that they would corrupt the morale of the United States and would put Protestant way of living at threat. There was a great Progressive movement that emerged during this period and advocated the signing of the 18th amendment. To control the immigrants Protestant Americans advocated Prohibition since it affected them the most. Drinking alcohol was a past time that was generally enjoyed by immigrants and the working class. The Churches were pushing for temperance, but weren't pushing for prohibition of alcohol. Temperance organizations weren't receiving enough support so they decided to back their claim with science. These studies found that alcohol raises blood pressure, causes heart diseases, and inhibits motor reaction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Racial Stereotyping In The Early 20th Century "Cartooning has always been informed by the tradition of caricature," [Wells, 1998, p.252] thus leading animators creating a series of harrowing cartoons consisting an analysis of offensive racist contents. This essay will demonstrate the intense racial stereotyping in the early 20th century but mainly focusing on black caricaturing and seeing how it culturally changed with Disney, as it can be argued that they are still stereotyping in their animations today. The stock characters of blackface minstrelsy have played a significant role in disseminating racist images, attitudes and perceptions worldwide. Every immigrant group was stereotyped on the music hall stage during the 19th Century, but the history of prejudice, hostility, and ignorance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film was set in Norway in the 1840s, portraying the Sami culture of its time that were generally people of white colour however, as it wasn't an animation that was wholly geographically nor historically correct, although unintentional, it lacked a diverse cast. 'Frozen' use a non–diverse cast but it is made for a modern, multi–ethnic audience. The film is already a fantasy and mystical themed movie with lots of magic, a plethora of things that doesn't exist but non–white seem to come in as though a non–realistic feature. Despite Disney conceiving an all–white cast to follow through the Sami culture from the 1840s, it could have involved other races to avoid convolution towards children, chiefly when it comes to purchasing merchandise. Disclaimers were created throughout the 1960s and although that might've been valuable in helping parents avoid problematic cartoons for their children, disclaimers still couldn't realistically protect audiences from an endless range of controversial content. The year was 1648 at the time the law stated that anyone who owned land was permitted to vote, although despite the fact that Margaret Brent was a landowner at the time she was denied the right to vote simply because she was a women. It was 1848 when the battle for equal rights fighting to bring an end to women's suffrage began. In 1870 the 15th amendment was passed which gave African Americans the right to vote, this served as a realization to women that they were not being treated equally. In 1947 the so called "clothing restriction" came to an end and women were finally allowed to dress however they pleased, they began to lose the glamorous material and clothing and began to dress more masculine. (Glamor Daze).Women found a peaceful way to rebel against stereotypical beliefs of feminism through fashion. They used fashion as a reminder that they ran the country during World War 2 and are capable of more than men make it seem. Rosie the Riveter was one of the biggest female icons, she was used in an attempt to attract women to the work force and it served to represent the massive increase of about 65% working women during the war (History.com). • 13. American Imperialism In The Early 20th Century In 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair there was an exhibit funded by the US Government to show Americans what life was like in the Philippine colonies. Unfortunate this exhibition was not accurate representation of people's lives in the Philippines. They were portrayed as being uncivilized and practitioners of non–God fearing religions, even though many Philippine people converted Roman Catholicism under Spanish rule. The Government conveyed a distorted representation of the Philippines to convince Americans that the colonization of the Philippines was not just for the United States benefit but for the improvement and civilization of the population of the Philippines. While there are many reasons behind the United States imperialist endeavors in the early 20th century, the main justifications were wealth, religion, recognition, and science. Before the 20th century Americans business believed Americas, economy could survive while being self–sufficient and did not require any international interaction. But after facing multiple economic depressions in the late 1th century they came to the realization that interaction in the world's economy could benefit them economically. After they came to this realization they turned to the United States government to protect their economic interests abroad, even going as far to use military force if necessary. ... Oralism In The Early 20th Century In France, the United States, and some other countries, instruction and communication were carried out in various sign languages, while in Britain, Germany, and elsewhere in northern Europe oralism (speech and lipreading) dominated. These schools' graduates formed local and national deaf communities. For example, deaf Swedes founded the Stockholm Deaf Club in 1868. In the mid 19th century school alumni in the United States, who communicated in the American Sign Language (ASL) they had developed, established newspapers, churches, and social clubs. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries an aggressive oralist movement challenged sign languages everywhere. Resisting oralism, the American deaf community formed state political associations and, in 1880, founded the National Association of the Deaf. Deaf advocates fought the revamping of education and defended ASL. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Morality In The Early 20th Century Indeed, the early twentieth century started with an innumerable amount of excitement for progress from the scientific and moral advancements of human society. Many thinkers coming into the new century had abandoned the concept of an external moral law which governed their behavior. The abandonment of the moral law originated from the intellectual questioning of its exists and it claim on one's behavior (Glover, 2012, p. 1). As the authority of religion and belief in God began to diminish (Glover, 2012, p. 1), many individuals began to embrace reason–based morality influenced by the Enlightenment period. However, the Enlightenment idea of human reasoning to guide morality became obsolete as cruelty, barbarism, and death remained prominent throughout the century (Glover, 2012, p. 7). Within this moral identity, there are moral resources that include psychological responses such as sympathy or respect towards others that governs how an individual acts (Glover, 2012, p 22–23). The tendency for individuals to act on these responses signifies that humans have deeply rooted psychological disposition separate from any societal influence to act humanely (Gaspar, slide 2). The weakening of these psychological responses can result in the eradication of an individual's moral identity making them susceptible to acting inhumanely. Consequently, the erosion of one's moral identity is precisely what happened during the twentieth century that lead to the carnality of war seen throughout the century. The essence of moral identity was removed through the desensitization and resocialization of a certain social group to override their moral responses to act inhumanely; this known as the Moral Psychology of Waging ... Psychology In The Early 20th Century In the early twentieth century, social reformers planned to use the education system to regenerate democracy and to reconstruct the self–political responsibility that everyone held. But to do so, a new faith in science, numbers, and technology had to be accepted. Science helps solve social problems and the making of a more solid social policy. During this time period, education and science had to become closely associated to make this reformation possible. • 33. The Rise Of The Late And Early 20th Century The period surrounding the late and early 20th century was the most dramatic era in modern history. It was a period where Western ideals were pushed by motivated empires with ambitions of wealth and expanding territory and, while impossible to distinguish the most influencing factor that led to the Westernization of nations on a global scale, it is easy to determine key points that played important roles in world history. With Western cultures emerging with both technological and military advantage over secluded and obsolete empires, it was only a matter of time before the West inspired and impacted subjugated nations to build an empire of their own. Countries such as Japan, Russia, as well as Europe's scramble for Africa are prime examples of existing legacies from the imperialistic era of the late 19th century and onto the early 20th century. A balance of imperial expansion and their eventual collapse were the key components utilized by Western nations to modernize and westernize the world between the periods of 1850 and 1950. Perhaps the most dramatic example of a country highly influenced by Western ideals was Japan in the early 20th Century. Initially, Japan faced severe social issues, primarily with crop failure, economic turmoil, and a rising merchant class in the late 19th century under the Tokugawa rule. To further exacerbate domestic issues, Japan was also under pressure from European nations who wanted to open trade ports in Japan. These demands were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Role Of Technology In The Early 20th Century Jillian Garrett History 1493 Professor Hanshew 19 June 2015 Research Paper Technology in the early 20th century grew quickly and brought many changes to life both at home and in work. Automobiles, home appliances, and entertainment changed how Americans spent their time and money. During the early to mid–20th century America went through an economical depression, two wars, and recessions, this caused many Americans to go through stages of poverty, fear, and wealth. The advancement of technology did not come without downfalls including pollution, debt, and change in moral beliefs. In 1903 the Ford Motor Company was founded in Detroit, Michigan. Safety regulations were not originally in use when automobiles were first on the road which led to the invention of traffic lights, "cat's eyes," and painting of lines in the road to assist drivers. Vehicles have come a long way since their introduction into American society and they continue to change as newer technology grows. At the turn of the century many homes were cleaned by hand, food was prepared in stoves, and children played in sitting rooms or outside. Technology allowed for changes to be made in the home over the course of just a few years with the introduction of toasters, refrigerators, televisions, and vacuum cleaners. Cooking for the household became easier with the advancements of gas and eventually electric ranges. Busch describes how the shift from gas range to electric range was beneficial as the units were smaller allowing more space in the kitchen, there was better temperature control, and "oven heat control and exterior coolness since older gas ranges lacked oven thermostats and insulation." Refrigerators had been around for years, but were large and took up much of the room in a kitchen. Isenstadt states, "Electric refrigerators in the 1920s and 1930s were seen as a large step toward modernization of the home." Shortly after this time customization of refrigerators became popular and with advances in the electrical components involved the units became smaller. • 41. Cocaine In The Early 20th Century Essay Deion Alexander 08/28/2016 Research Paper Cocaine Hydrochloride in the early 20th century was used in many ways. Some may say that small doses were added to the drink Coca Cola, that's where the name come from. I feel as if this is true because Coca Cola is slightly addictive. The original formula of coca cola did have 25mg of cocaine per 100ml of drink. That formula was used as a stimulant for headaches. Cocaine Hydrochloride was an ingredient in patent medicines, tonics, elixirs, and fluid extracts. With the right amount it could save and cure you but if you were given more than needed you would get addicted. Doctors knew what would happen to a patient if they were given to much therefore they created something called the Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914. The Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914 was made and passed to put a restriction on the legal use of the cocaine. This was made because once the patient was cured and well their body was still craving the drug. In the 1930's the cocaine demand was lower because with this act and the creation of amphetamine. There were still a few people doing cocaine for recreation use. The Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914 was starting to fail in the 60's as the use of cocaine started to increase again. This time people were not using it to get well. They were using it as recreation then they was going back to their normal lives. However, despite the change and evolution of the culture, the rich elements of the culture have been passed through the generations (Colby, 597). The whites, the blacks, the natives, and the Latinos all brought their culture in their lives. The American people then tried to incorporate these cultures which by mid 20th century became synonymous with the American people. The blend of these cultures became rich and inspiring. • 49. Medical Care In The Early 20th Century "War is the only proper school for a surgeon" – Hippocrates. That would be the case in the early 20th century. The early 20th century is commonly associated with war, blood shed and conflict. During this time is when lots of people died. People died due to many things; war or battle, lack of medical care, or even due to an epidemic. Medical care was rough back then, the shortage of doctors and the lack of medical facilities made the death toll higher. Today, we see less people die due to epidemics, lack of medical care and even less due to battle. Thats all possible because medical care during the 20th century is very different from today, given that today we have better facilities, more doctors, and more advanced technology. They were moved by a combination of people , which were later collected by stretcher bearers and were brought far enough beyond the lines of battle. They were then transported by horse or cart, and sometimes by motorized ambulance, when available.[2] These men would be moved until they reached a location where they could receive treatment for their injury. Just like today, there were hospitals available, but back then, they were mostly set up in abandoned buildings or any available unoccupied buildings. However, for more serious injuries requiring emergency care, Casualty Clearing Stations were set up in tents. Here surgeries were often performed. In the early 20th century, medical utensils were limited, resulting in the use of guilotines for the amputation of limbs. [3] Today not every injury is an emergency, thus the emergency room. But back then almost every case was an emergency. While now we have a very structured emergency procedure, requiring triages, during the early 20th century, triages were ... The Role Of Alliances In The Early 20th Century Early 20th Century The beginning of the 20th century many countries had alliances that are almost like friends between each other witch would ironically start the largest war the world has seen at the time. WW1 was between two groups of alliances, the Central powers that consisted of Germany Austria– hungry Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. The other side was the allied powers which consisted of Great Britain France and Italy. Each side thought this massive war would be over very quickly because of all the technologies in new weaponry such as machine guns, tanks, airplane warfare, submarines and chemical weapons were thought to overpower anyone who tried to fight back. Chemical weapons were said to be too inhuman and destructive to be used during war so they are now banned from any confutation. The population levels increased. From 1901 – 1911 the population increased from 42 million to 45 million. This meant there was an increase in birth and a decrease in death rates. There were very distinct social divisions. At the top were the upper and upper middle classes. They earned above £700 a year. They were only 3% of the population yet they earned most the country's wages. They usually went to public school when young then went onto university. Most would then join the army. The most popular jobs were domestic, agricultural and in the building trade. The women were the lowest paid of them all and most worked in the domestic service. The Daily Mail was the cheapest newspaper at ½ pence. In those days, Britain was a parliamentary democracy but the House of Lords could block decisions made by the House of Commons. The system was unfair in that only a few people could vote. By 1906, all men with households could vote but the women couldn't. There were two main parties, the liberals and the Conservatives. They were mostly supported by richer people. The conservatives believed in laissez faire, where they leave people to their own problems. The Conservatives believed that they should leave the rich people to get on with making Britain richer. • 61. Early 20th Century Dehumanization Through Theatrical Plays... Chris Shea ENG 343 Professor Robert Dowling 12/13/16 Early 20th–Century Dehumanization through Theatrical Plays and Cinema The early 20th century was a time for a booming economy and American prosperity. During this time, the America we know and love/hate today came into power. The emergence of a 'middle class' of Americans came from this time due to the jobs provided by factories and the formation of unions to keep some workplaces in check. From the introduction of the automobile to lower– and middle– class Americans for everyday use, to the harnessing of electricity and oil as power sources for everyday objects and tools, the early 20th century has revolutionized the American way of life to this day. However, with great advancements in society and technology come the great costs associated with them. Take for example WWI, otherwise known as 'The Great War'. According to The History Learning Site, a whopping 8.5 million soldiers were killed and 21 million were wounded in this war. Up to this point, these numbers were completely unheard of. But thanks to these great advancements in technology, these numbers were easily obtainable, rendering the human component of war practically useless. This was the first major real–life instance of a theme frequently used in the 20th century: dehumanization. This theme is especially expressed through the art of the time, where new advancements lead to new thoughts about humanity and the role the common man plays in this new, perhaps alien ... As immigrants were introduced to the freshly structured land and economy of Canada it began to show that immigration was essential to the financial structure of Canada. Some of the reasons that immigration was important to the Canadian economy in the early 20th century is that it prevented American expansion, Railway Business benefited from providing service to western Canada, immigrants started new businesses in Canada and industrialization and urbanization. Even though birth rates were higher than immigration rates in the early 20th century immigration was still very important to the Canadian economy because since approximately 180,000 people immigrated to Canada during the time periods of 1900–1910 and each of those immigrants received 160 acres of land in western Canada it stopped the possibility of America expansion because western Canada was beginning to become colonized which boosted the economy because Canada has one of the world's largest supply of natural resources such as metals, lumber and oil and in order for those resources to be not only discovered but to be put to use Canada needed workers but it had a very low birthrate compared to the other country's therefore immigration was need to put Canada's resources to use and start internationals trade and to boost the economy and without immigration the birth rate would stay low also "Economic activity in Canada is ... People were starting to move to the West and gender and racial inequality were increasing social issues. These, among other historical events influenced literary styles of the era such as realism, naturalism, frontier realism, regionalism and African American literature. Writers like Mark Twain, Jack London and W.E.B. Du Bois thrived in their writing during this era and captured perfectly what the people could relate to. The growth of cities in America increased substantially during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Numbers of immigrants reached up to 2 million arriving in the United States. The bulk of immigrants during this time came from Italy with a whopping number of 4,600,000 people, even though, nine percent of Norway's population emigrated to America in the 1880s. In fact, most of the immigrants came from Europe with the exception of some Canadians. In the early 20th century, East Asia went through a process of modernisation to cope with the challenges brought by the Western powers. There were long term socio–political and cultural impacts which shaped the modern East Asia in the early 20th century. What Is The Role Of American Women In The Early 20th Century Before the 20th century, the constrictions of the private sphere limited the roles of American women to those that related to domesticity. These roles included child bearing, rearing, cleaning, cooking, and tending to their husbands. This meant that women tended to set aside their hopes and dreams for a future that would extend beyond their lives of domesticity in order to focus solely on their home life. However, at the beginning of the 20th century women took it upon themselves to move away from the private sphere as they began to challenge their traditional roles. Skyscrapers, highway systems, and suspension bridges are all forms of innovation that, through the help of engineering and complex technological systems, can be observed in nearly every city around the world. These technological innovations have allowed sprawling urban environments to become the definition of a developed country, despite their infamous reputation for loud noises, traffic, and decreased air quality. Seen and unseen forces such as organization of labor and an expanded industry base gave rise to these urban centers through thoughtful planning and execution. In order for great American cities to form, a technological system must be in place. This system must incorporate a dedicated workforce that acknowledges diversification of labor. The Lowell Mills from the late 19th and early 20th centuries represent a system that allows economic prosperity through production (Hindle, 186). She was devastated to have seen the birds' neck wrung the way it was. She must have mourned the death of the bird the same as the death of a child. Mrs. Hale describes Minnie Foster as, "kind of like a bird herself –– real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and – fluttery"(Susan Glaspell, 22). When Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters find Minnie's birdcage in the cupboard, they do not realize the importance of it until they find the dead bird with its neck "wrung" (Susan Glaspell, 23). Mrs. Hale says to Mrs. Peters, "No, Wright wouldn't like the bird –– a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too" (Glaspell, 25). Mr. Wright's presumed killing is a "symbolic attack" (Brian Sutton, 172) on his wife, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sex was becoming to be a woman's way of expressing herself and in a way have control over certain situation Edith Wharton's "Summer" and John Steinbeck' s "The Chrysanthemums" show two characters (both of them women) struggling between society's rules and laws and their own believes and desires. Cynthia Bily, who wrote a critical essay on Summer says, "At the Jewelry store, where she [Charity] sees jewelry close up for the first time, she is attracted to a 'a gold lily–of–the–valley with white flowers'––an understandable attraction for a woman who loves the natural world as much as she does." Charity chooses the brooch that represents her. This, however, not only shows Charity admiration and love for nature, but Harney's ability to "buy" Charity's attention and eventually sexual intimacy. The Brooch place an important part in the story. She carriers the brooch everywhere and when she had to give it away, she goes back to the doctor's office and gets it back. Steinbeck also makes nature a very important part of his story. "Worn, Damaged bodies in Literature and Photography of the Great Depression" by Thomas Fahy examples the important role of nature in Steinbeck's novels. He writes that throughout his novels, migrant workers depend on their ability to do physical labor for survival. Whether a man is good at lifting heavy loads, picking apples, or fixing cars, he typically measures Galante Gonzalez, 3 self–worth in terms of usefulness and a strong body. Conservatism Early 20th Century Nationalism, according to Merriam–Webster, is the "loyalty and devotion to a nation" to the point that "one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups." However, there are a couple of other national tendencies that had an impact on world history. Nationalism was the most important and impactful ideology during the early twentieth century Europe. One of those movements was based in the German Empire with the idea of Pan–Germanism and it was heavily supported with German militarism, the idea that "the state of the nation was defined and reflected by the strength of its military forces" (Alpha History). Even known there were many other nationalist movements, none of them had a greater impact and responsibility for starting the Great War than the Slavic groups. These groups all shared Pan–Slavism which is "the belief that the Slavic peoples of eastern Europe should have their own nation, was a powerful force in the region" (Alpha History). Serbia had the most nationalists within the Balkans region because it rejected Austrian– Hungarian influence and rule over their lands. As the result, the infamous nationalist group, Black Hand (or Crna Ruka) assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, beginning World War I. The first world war lasted four years until the German Empire signed an armistice to the Entente in 1918. Afterwards, the Entente (especially France) heavily punished the German Empire by demanding them to pay unrealistic reparations. It would be one of the leading causes of the formation of the Nazi Germany in the early nineteen thirties. And the German nationalism movement eventually embraced Nazism, leading them to create World War ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many reasons pulled foreigners to America. Louise Nagy, a Polish immigrant in 1913, describes the many rumors spread about America. She tells of the rumor, "Gold on the streets of America." Nagy says that you could have any occupation in America and still make decent earnings. In April 28, 1880, a caricature named, "Welcome to All!" by J. Keppler in Puck Magazine, describes some of the many reasons why foreigners would immigrate to America out of all countries. In America, there are no heavy taxes, and no demanding kings–America is a democracy. As in America, there is no compulsory military service, people were not forced to serve in the military. In America, there was no domestic punishment or torture using knouts and dungeons. As shown in the sign of the caricature, there was free education, free land, free speech, free ballot, and free lunch in America. In America there are many freedoms protected by the Bill of Rights, unlike many foreign countries. Immigrants may want to migrate to the United States because here, you can freely practice any religion without persecution, as it was recognized in America that religion and government are two different entities. Polio has since been researched and eradicated in many countries but still continues to be a problem in others. Polio struck in the early 1900s in countries with relatively high standards. Most countries were concerned with more pressing diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid, and tuberculosis. But scientist believe that these diseases had connection to why polio became so widespread.. Countries were so focused on cleaning the water supply to avoid these diseases that they might have taken away anti–bodies that young infants needed to prevent polio.
