Instructions: Think of some instance that you have personally
encountered or if you will encounter your guidance counselor.
You can present these observations through a semantic web.

Counseling according to (George &
Cristini, 1995) consist of any ethical
duties a councilor undertakes in an
effort to help the client engage in
those types of behavior will lead to a
resolution of the client problem.

The Role of the counselor
must be involved in
helping their client not
only mental wellness but
also physical fitness and
health habits.
Demonstrating various competencies in counseling can aid
professionals in assisting their clients.
Knowledge – counselor should be familiar with the aspects
in personal development, factors that affect
human functioning, cultural diversity and, various
theories in psychotherapy and group interaction.
Good Counselling Relationship –
 Explain the practice and responsibilities of a counselor to the clients.
 Maintain confidentiality and know the limits of informed consent.
 Exhibit the core conditions of a counseling relationship.
 Attend to the client’s needs in terms of feeling, thoughts and behavior.
 Exhibit a variety of counseling skills and be able to read and respond to
non verbal cues,
 Demonstrate cultural awareness
 Support clients in their issues and help them determine options and
make decisions.
Counseling Skills – counselors should use a mode of counseling
based on a given framework, be able to help clients develop a
since of self-worth and be able to assess their progress.
Exhibiting professional and ethical Attitudes and Practices –
counselors should be conscious of their professional
responsibility to the client.
The Role of the counselor must be involved in
helping their client not only mental wellness
but also physical fitness and health habits.
1. School Counseling
Counselors tend to help students with
their mental health.
2. Substance Abuse Counseling
The main clients of these counselors are
people who have problems in
various mood-altering drugs.
Rehabilitation counselors are specialists who work with individuals
with disabilities in overcoming their limitation and fulfilling their
potentials.
3. Rehabilitation Counseling
4. Mental Health Counseling
Mental health counselors have become key members of a variety
of mental health treatment teams in hospitals and mental health
agencies.
These counselors are concerned with the total well-being of their
clients.
5. Health and Wellness Counseling
6. Business and Industry Counseling
These counselors are focused on employee assistance programs,
career development programs, and many more.
7. Private Practice Counseling
It is difficult to maintain such practice because counselors are now
on their own creating business on a counseling firm.
 Counseling requires knowledge of rights of their clients.-
Counselors who demonstrate their respect for their rights of their
clients build a good relationship with them.
 The rights of informed consent. – This demands that clients be
given enough information to make informed choices.
 Minors’ rights- a minor’s right to treatment. Can a minor seek
counseling without parental consent?
 The right to a referral- A counselor feels unqualified to handle a
case or believes that the type of or duration of treatment at hand is
too limited for what the client should receive.

Responsibilities
 Duty to warn and protect – Protect other people from potentially
dangerous clients and protect clients from themselves.
 Social and Personal Relationship with Clients – Avoid dual
relationships that could impair their professional judgment or
increase the risk of exploitation .
 Touching as a part of the counseling relationship- Non-erotic
touching can be of benefit to the client.
Suggested guidelines for appropriate non-erotic touching:
• In cases of counseling socially and emotionally immature
clients(e.g those with a history of maternal deprivation)
• In counseling people in crisis, such as those suffering from grief
or trauma
• In giving general emotional support
• In greeting or at the end of a session.
Ethical Principles that Guide Behaviors of Counselors
Ethics is basically about human conduct and moral decision making.
The code of ethics has five main purposes:
 to clarify the nature of ethical responsibilities
 to support the mission of the organization
 to establish principles that inform best practice
 to assist members in constructing a coarse of action and;
 to serve as the basis for processing ethical complaints and inquires.
The code of ethics of counselors has eight sections
1. Section 1- the counseling relationship
2. Section 2- confidentiality, Privilege communication , and Privacy
3. Section 3- Professional Responsibility
4. Section 4- Relationship with other Professionals
5. Section 5- Evaluation , assessment, and interpretation
6. Section 6- Supervision, Training, and Teaching
7. Section 7- Research and Publication
8. Section 8- Resolving Ethical Issues
Ethical principles in counseling are frame for action that can be used to
work through an ethical dilemma.
1. Assurance of confidentiality.
The counselor should let the client know the extent of confidentiality
in the relationship.
2. Beneficence.
Considered the responsibility to do good and to contribute to the
welfare of client (Forester-Miller and Davis 1996).
3. Fidelity.
this principles deals with the trust relationship between the
counselor and their client.
4. Justice.
its is the counselors' ability to acknowledge inequity and apply
intervention to suit.
5. Non-maleficence.
This term means to do no harm. Its is a concept derived the
medical profession. Autonomy relates to individual client, non-
maleficence refers to the abilities of the counselor.
6. Respect for Autonomy
The freedom of clients to choose their own direction respecting that
clients has ability to make choices free from the constraints of others
(Welfel, 1998:Corey, Corey and Callanan, 2007)
Activity 3: Am I Right or Wrong?
Part I:
Instruction: Distinguish between ethical and unethical behaviors
among counselors.
1.Counselor attends seminars to update her skills.
2. Counselors have intimate relationship with the client.
3.After the session, counselor accept gifts from the client.
4. The counselor recommend referral but assume responsibility.
5.The counselor warns the client’s family that the client is potentially
dangerous.

a counselor, otherwise write Unethical.

5.The counselor warns the client’s family that the client is potentially
dangerous.
Part II. Instruction: Determine if the situation shows ethical behavior
or unethical behavior and briefly explain.
1.You are a successful counselor. One of your clients tells, you to
have been very, very helpful to him, and to show his appreciation
to you, he gives you a diamond ring as a gift. You accept the
ring.
2. One of your clients feels sexually attracted to you, and tells you
this. You and the client mutually agree to start a dating relationship.
Part II. Instruction: Determine if the situation shows ethical behavior or
unethical behavior and briefly explain.
3. A client cannot afford to pay for one of her counseling sessions
with you. In lieu of payment, you ask her to babysit your 2-year-old
son at your home a few times.
4. You go to lunch with your family. In the restaurant you talk about
some of your cases but you did not mention the names of any of
your clients.
5. You allow your client who is already at the right age to make her
own decisions and you reminded him/her the consequences.

Learning Task: SITUATION ANALYSIS
Instructions: In a one whole sheet of paper, analyze the given
situation below. Identify the problem, and the specific area or type
of counseling that the client needed.

1.Rea recently transferred to a new school due to her family
relocating to a different city. However, she finds herself struggling to
adapt to a new school culture and environment. She feels isolated
and anxious about making new friends and fitting in with her peers.

2. Alex has been struggling with anxiety leading him to self-
medicate with alcohol and prescription drugs. His substance abuse
has only worsened his mental issues creating a vicious cycle of
dependency and emotional turmoil.
3. A 30-year-old-woman, has been struggling with weight gain and
emotional eating for years. Despite numerous attempts to follow
diets and exercises she continues to struggle. Her weight gain has
also taken a toll on her self-esteem, impacting her social life and
overall quality of life.
4. Daniel a successful entrepreneur, has built a thriving business from
the ground up but finds himself struggling to balance his work
commitments with his personal life. He wanted to seek counseling to
explore ways to delegate tasks, set boundaries, prioritize self-care,
and create a more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle that aligns with
his values and goals.
Learning Task:
Instructions: In a one whole sheet of paper, copy and answer the
following questions. Answer briefly and concisely in 3-5 sentences.
1. Give at least 3 characteristics of a counselor and discuss each
briefly.
2. What areas of counseling have you observed being offered in the
municipality of Liloan?
3. In the Code of Ethics, there is portion of client’s right to privacy.
What if the client confided that he/she killed someone 3 years ago.
Will you disclose the information to the right authorities or not?

4. A client with a previous history of child abuse reported that she
recently went through a great deal of stress from work. She revealed
that she felt she was losing control and got angry easily with her 10-
year-old daughter at home. She indicated that on those occasion,
she was on the verge of exploding on her daughter. If you are the
counselor, what will you do?

Knowledge – counselor should be familiar with the aspects in personal development, factors that affect human functioning, cultural diversity and, various theories in psychotherapy and group interaction.

Good Counselling Relationship –  Explain the practice and responsibilities of a counselor to the clients.  Maintain confidentiality and know the limits of informed consent.  Exhibit the core conditions of a counseling relationship.  Attend to the client’s needs in terms of feeling, thoughts and behavior.  Exhibit a variety of counseling skills and be able to read and respond to non verbal cues,  Demonstrate cultural awareness  Support clients in their issues and help them determine options and make decisions.

  • 16.  Counseling requires knowledge of rights of their clients.- Counselors who demonstrate their respect for their rights of their clients build a good relationship with them.  The rights of informed consent. – This demands that clients be given enough information to make informed choices.  Minors’ rights- a minor’s right to treatment. Can a minor seek counseling without parental consent?  The right to a referral- A counselor feels unqualified to handle a case or believes that the type of or duration of treatment at hand is too limited for what the client should receive. Responsibilities  Duty to warn and protect – Protect other people from potentially dangerous clients and protect clients from themselves.  Social and Personal Relationship with Clients – Avoid dual relationships that could impair their professional judgment or increase the risk of exploitation .  Touching as a part of the counseling relationship- Non-erotic touching can be of benefit to the client.

Suggested guidelines for appropriate non-erotic touching: • In cases of counseling socially and emotionally immature clients(e.g those with a history of maternal deprivation) • In counseling people in crisis, such as those suffering from grief or trauma • In giving general emotional support • In greeting or at the end of a session.
  • 19. Ethical Principles that Guide Behaviors of Counselors Ethics is basically about human conduct and moral decision making. The code of ethics has five main purposes:  to clarify the nature of ethical responsibilities  to support the mission of the organization  to establish principles that inform best practice  to assist members in constructing a coarse of action and;  to serve as the basis for processing ethical complaints and inquires.

  • 21. Ethical principles in counseling are frame for action that can be used to work through an ethical dilemma. 1. Assurance of confidentiality. The counselor should let the client know the extent of confidentiality in the relationship. 2. Beneficence. Considered the responsibility to do good and to contribute to the welfare of client (Forester-Miller and Davis 1996). 3. Fidelity. this principles deals with the trust relationship between the counselor and their client.

Its is a concept derived the medical profession. Autonomy relates to individual client, non- maleficence refers to the abilities of the counselor. 6. Respect for Autonomy The freedom of clients to choose their own direction respecting that clients has ability to make choices free from the constraints of others (Welfel, 1998:Corey, Corey and Callanan, 2007)
