C.R. Rao is an Indian-American statistician born in 1920 in Karnataka, India. He received his master's degree in mathematics from Andhra Pradesh and joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 1941, where he began his research career. Rao has made seminal contributions to statistics and related fields over his long career. He developed estimation theory, statistical inference, multivariate analysis and more. Rao received the National Medal of Science in 2002 and the India Science Award in 2010 for his lifetime achievements. At 100 years old, Rao remains a living legend in the field of statistics.
