C.R. Rao is an Indian-American statistician born in 1920 in Karnataka, India. He received his master's degree in mathematics from Andhra Pradesh and joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 1941, where he began his research career. Rao has made seminal contributions to statistics and related fields over his long career. He developed estimation theory, statistical inference, multivariate analysis and more. Rao received the National Medal of Science in 2002 and the India Science Award in 2010 for his lifetime achievements. At 100 years old, Rao remains a living legend in the field of statistics.

- 2. Calyampudi RadhaKrishsna (C.R.Rao) was born on 10 sep, 1920 at hadagali in Karnataka. He is an Indian- American mathematician and Statistician . He received his masters degree in mathematics from Mrs A.V.N college(AP). He ranked in examination. Then he went to Calcutta for the job. Life/Education:
- 3. He went to Calcutta and appeared for an interview for the job but this too eluded him. However, during his stay in Calcutta, he met Mr. Subramanian, who was employed in Bombay, but had been sent to Calcutta for training in statistics at an institute called the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). This chance encounter led Rao to join this training program in statistics at ISI, hoping that with this additional qualification, he could get a job.
- 4. 40 YEARS AT THE INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Rao joined the ISI in 1941, at the age of 20, and began independent research and published some of these results. He received his M.A. degree in Statistics from Calcutta University in 1943 with a first class, first rank with his score at graduation still an unbroken record.
- 5. Rao was given the position of a research scholar at ISI in 1943 and a part-time job in Calcutta University to teach a course in statistics. He continued to carry out his independent research on a variety of topics in combinatorics and parametric estimation.

- 8. He generated a number of further technical terms appearing in specialized literature, like Quantum Cramér-Rao Bound providing sharper versions of Heisenberg's Principle in Quantum Physics. His impact on Multivariate Statistical Analysis is exemplary. He elaborated a unique basis of the already known and newly introduced methods by means of the spectral and singular value decomposition of matrices. He defined a Generalized Inverse (g-inverse) of a matrix (singular or rectangular) and demonstrated its usefulness in the study of linear models and singular multivariate distributions. He also made significant contributions to combinatorial mathematics for use in design of experiments, the most important of which is Orthogonal Arrays. In the last decades he also touched upon non-linear methods, resampling methods (he wrote a handbook on Bootstrap), neural networks, and data mining.

Rao has received 38 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in 19 countries around the world and numerous awards and medals for his contributions to statistics and science Rao was awarded with the United States National Medal of Science, which is the nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research, in June 2002 Awards:
- 10. He was given the India Science Award in 2010, the highest honor conferred by the government of India in a scientific domain. In 2013, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Miodrag Lovric and Shlomo Sawilowsky, for their contribution to the International Encyclopedia of Statistical Science. He was most recently honored with his 38th honorary doctorate by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, on 26 July 2014 for "his contributions to the foundations of modern statistics .
