BHASKARACHARYA
Introduction
Hello !
I’m Pushpanvitha from 8th
standard . Today I’m speaking
about a famous mathematician ,
“ BHASKARACHARYA”
LET’SKNOWSOMEINFOABOUTBHASKARACHARYA
Baskara is also known as Bhaskara [or]
Bhaskaracharya , this later name means
“Baskara the teacher”. Baskara was an Indian
mathematician and astronomer who extended
Brahmagupta ‘s work on number system He was
born near Bijjada biddha [in present day day
called Bijapur district Karnataka state ] into the
Brahmin family , his father Maheshvara was the
person who taught him about astronomy as he
was an Ujjain the leading mathematical center of ancient
India
BHASKARACHARYA ‘S ACHIEVEMENTS
 He was most likely the first to use a circle for the Zero
for the Hindu Arabic Decimal System .
 He is Considered to be a follower of aryabhatta and
one of the most renowned scholars of the Aryabhatta ‘s

 Bhaskara wrote the Aryabhatiya bhasya which is
commentry on Aryabhatta .
 Baskara commented only on the 33 verses of the
Aryabhatiya which is about Mathematics , Astronomy ,
and discuss the Promblems of the first degree of
intermediate Equation and trignometric formula .
 He has called him “ Ganakchakra chudamani “ whichmeans
“ A gem among all caluculaters of Astronomical
Phenomena”.
BHASKARACHARYA’S
ACHIEVEMENTS
 Bhaskaracharya was first discover gravity 500
years before Sir.Issac Newton.
 He wrote Siddantha siromani in 1150 A.D. when
he was 36 years old.
 It contains 1450 verses.
 It is divided into four parts
BHASKARACHARYA’S
ACHIEVEMENTS
LILAVATHI
BEEJAGANITHA
GANITHADYAYA
GOLADYAYA
 In fact each part can be considered as separate book.
 The number of verses in each part are as follows
Lilavati has 278 verses, Beejaganita has 213 verses,
Ganitadhyaya has 451, Goladhyaya has 501 verses
BHASKARACHARYA’S
ACHIEVEMENTS
 One of the important charecteristic of Siddhantha siromani
is , it consists of simple methods of calculations from
arithematic to Astronomy.
 Essential knowledge of ancient Indian astronomy can be
acquired by reading only this book
 After Bhaskaracharya nobody could write excellent books on
mathematics and astronomy in lucid language in India
 Lilawati is excellent example of how a difficult subject like
mathematics can be written in poetic language
 Lilawati was translated in many languages throught the world
BHASKARACHARYA’S ACHIEVEMENTS
 When British empire became paramount in india , they
established 3 universities in 1857 , at Bombay , Calcutta
and Madras .
 Till then for about 700 years , mathematics was taught in
India from Bhaskaracharya’s Lilawathi ,Beejaganitha , and
other textbooks has enjoyed such a long lifespan
BHASKARACHARYA’S ACHIEVEMENTS
 In english , cardinal numbers are only in multiples of
1000, they have terms such as thosands , million , billion
, trillion , quadrillion , ETC….. Most of these have been
added recently.
 Baskara’s terms are as follows
eka [1]
dasha [10]
shata [100]
sahasra [1000]
ayuta [10000]
laksha [10000000]
prayutha [1000000 = million ]
koti [10^7]
WHAT BASKARA TELLS ABOUT
HIS EDUCATION
“I have studied 8 books of Grammer
6 texts of medicine , 6 books of logic
5 books of mathematics , 4 vedas ,
5 books on bharat shastras , and 2
Mimansas “
CONCLUSION
Looking at how much
knowledge he acquired in a
span of 36 years , it seems
impossible for any modern
student to achieve that feet in
his entire life
