seeks to expose what he believes to be a fundamental issue in today s schools and
colleges. He brings attention to street smarts , students who are intelligent about so
many things in life, yet their potential is overlooked because the things they are
knowledgeable about are not things we associate with educated life such as cars,
sports and video games. He claims that students are more likely to enter the world
of academics if they were encouraged to view their interests from an academic
perspective rather than to be forced into subjects that are considered more academic
by the rest of society. Gerald Graff s main point is that teachers should take advantage
of the interests that students already have and convince them to pursue those
interests with academic eyes , rather than forcing content on them that they are
uninterested in. Although I agree with the first part of Graff s statement, I think a
crucial skill to acquire is the ability to find interests in something outside of subjects
we initially find our interests in so that we may develop more as a whole person.

With the presidential elections right around the corner policy on minimum wage
has come up for debate once again. William Hoar from The New American argues
in his article Misguided minimum wage mandate that raising the minimum wage
will only result in loss of jobs. According to the editorial board at USA Today,

remaining 99 percent has only grown by 6.4 percent . They then state that a raise to

the fact that that age group are the people attending college and paying off student

Already in 1958, Modigliani and Miller have pointed the discussion of capital
structure towards the cost of debt and equity. According to their first proposition, in
a world of no corporate taxes and with perfect markets, financial leverage has no
effect on a firm s value. In their second proposition, they state that the cost of equity
equals a linear function defined by the required return on assets and the cost of debt
(Modigliani and Miller, 1958).
As negative aspects of debt, e.g. personal tax loss and bankruptcy costs however do
exist in reality, Miller (1977) elaborates that leverage will either have no or a
negative effect on the firm s value, hence untaxed firms should favor equity.
Nevertheless, firms have used leverage even before corporate taxes have been
introduced (Maris and Elayan, 1990). This implies the existence of some market
imperfections, which benefit the use of debt financing, thus enable a trade off of the
cost and benefits of debt resulting in an optimal capital structure, where marginal cost
equal marginal benefits.

In general, the majority of existing research is set up by taking the security issuance
