2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Francesca Gottschalk - How can education support child empowerment.pptxEduSkills OECD
Francesca Gottschalk from the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation presents at the Ask an Expert Webinar: How can education support child empowerment?
2. Technique
Problem
A technique problem which I may have is a lack of motivation to do the
work along with losing my concentration. I may also have issues with the
software, like aftereffects, which means I will constantly have to refer to
the tutorials, as I am not 100% confident with the software and how it
works. In order to solve this I need to improve my technique with
software such as Aftereffects as they are critical to my project. In order to
improve my motivation and concentration I will start work earlier in the
day when I am sharpest and can concentrate.
3. Equipment
In case of an emergency with the equipment, I will have replacements or
alternatives, so that it won't slow down or alter the production
timetable. This will be addressed in my planning document.
The alternates I will use to the equipment will be my phone camera,
spare clothes that fit the style and look I am aiming for. I will also have a
spare tripod which I can use for a camera and a phone tripod, which is
small enough to use as a handle to keep the camera steady.
4. Issuesfrom
previoustasks
In the previous tasks I have had issues, some of those issues were:
Lack of concentration
People catching COVID and stopping me from being able to film
Constant rescheduling for shoots
Not enough planning
College flooding on last day to get work done
The way I will address these issues are:
For my lack of concentration, I will try to get as much work done as possible
earlier in my day, which is when I am able to concentrate the best.
To deal with COVID I will make sure shoots are safer, with some distancing,
and outdoor shoots wherever possible. I also am not using people who are high
risk or live with people who are high risk from the potential affects of COVID.
To deal with rescheduling for shoots, I will make sure, in advance, that
everyone involved with the shoot will be informed a few weeks prior. They will
be informed when I make my production schedule, so they are definitely
available for the shoot.
When it comes to my planning, I will put a lot more detail and work into it, but
I will leave room for change. As my idea develops up to the planning stage, I
will have the idea in my head of what I want to make and will be ready to
produce.
If college floods on the last day again I will save all my work to my OneDrive, so
I can continue to work from home so my production isn’t disrupted.
5. Tshirtdesign
For the merchandise presentation I have made these t shirts with the
brand logo on them. These would be sold on the Aylien's Castle website as
merchandise. The reason I have chosen black and white as the colour for
the T-shirts is because I want it as more of an addition to an outfit, rather
than a stand-alone piece. This would make it attractive to the customers
of Aylien's Castle as they would want a potentially 'calmer' looking t-shirt,
as a compliment to their louder clothing item, that they purchased
through Aylien’s Castle. The reason I made the design for the black shirt
with a white background was to make the logo standout. I have also made
a post on the Instagram advertising that the t-shirts are coming soon.
The cost per t-shirt would be £1.59 from Wordans and cost per print
would be £3.96 from TeamShirts, making the total cost £5.55. Therefore
100 t-shirts would cost £555, which means that they would be sold for £10
a shirt.
A potential issue for the t-shirts is that the price is reasonably expensive
(£10), and some people may think £10 is too expensive for a t-shirt. The
way that I would combat this issue, is by advertising the shirt after every
purchase, with eventually people starting buying them.
7. Potential Problem Effect on Production Control/mitigation
Models don't or cannot turn up Production day missed, leading to falling behind
schedule
Plan heavily before making the dates of production
very clear and obvious to the models. Have extra
planned in as contingency
Computer breaks Won't be able to edit the footage Change computer in college or bring in laptop and edit
on it.
COVID People might have to miss production days Make sure we are being as COVID safe as possible.
Clothing breaks or is forgotten There won’t be the items for the models to wear Have alternate items available in order to switch in
case of emergencies
Equipment breaks Production days will be lost Use phone camera instead
Falling Injury/death Assess each location before shooting
Electrocution Injury/death Check that all equipment used in production works
and if possible pat-tested
Wi-Fi down at college Cannot do editing Save footage to a memory stick and work off line
College isn't open Cannot go into college and edit production time
lost
Save work to one drive and memory stick so it can be
always accessed
Loose memory stick Footage lost- unable to edit Save work to one drive as well, so it is saved on the
college system and can be accessed from there
Cannot get to the recording
locations
Unable to get footage slowing down time Have similar looking back up locations to work with
that are nearby
Power goes out Lose all unsaved work Regularly save work and have computer on autosave
9. Experiments
Plan1
The first experiment I am planning on carrying out is editing styles such
as the AWGE scrap book style. This will give me an opportunity to
experiment and practise cutting out different shapes and people.
Experiment 1:
Experiment 1 will be done with the footage that is taken from the camera.
In this experiment I will practice cutting out shots and editing them
heavily with animations. By doing this it will help me practise how to
create new transitions, making the video a lot more visually engaging for
the viewers. This will teach me how to do smaller animations to ensure
the video is more visually appealing.

10. Experiments
Plan2
My second experiment is to make a logo and practice putting one
together for my FMP; adjusting the texture and colour to see different
effects.
Experiment 2:
Experiment 2 is making a logo for a brand called Vampyre. I will see how
I can design a logo, which represents the name and look of the brand,
whilst trying not to visually overload the customer with the logo design.
11. Experiment3
This experiment will also try out my photography, when undertaking my
other experiments such as filming and using the camera. I will also try
my phone’s camera and compare the image quality, to see which would be
most suitable for my project.
Experiment 3:
Experiment 3 photography: I will take pictures of different surroundings
and models to see how the adjustment of light will affect the mood, for
example a bright light, in a dark room, positioned underneath the model
can create a spooky mood. As well as this how the angles and positioning
of models in the image can also exaggerate the mood. I also want to learn
how to send a message through the styling and posing of my models.
12. Experiment4
I will also make a graphic animation 3D logo. I will research YouTube
tutorials and follow them to create an animated graphic.
Experiment 4:
The way I will do this animation will be by getting a PNG Simple logo
then put this into Aftereffects in order to create an animation from it. I
will learn how to make this using a YouTube tutorial.
14. Experiment1
The bars video is made using some bars in a car park. I then cut out the triangle in
between the bars, using the brush tool in Photoshop. I then made it a PNG,
underlaying with the video of Jay with the car, to create a smoother transition. I have
seen this effect done in AWGE videos before and wanted to copy it.
The second video is of vampire teeth in a car roof. It was achieved by cutting out the
square, using Photoshop, then underlaying the image of the vampire teeth into the
square. I then put the image in Premier Pro for a few frames to create a short
animation style effect.
The third video was using the ultra-key tool and overlaying images in the sky to make
the video more visually engaging. This a very subtle and easy effect to do but has a
great effect when combined with other images.
The fourth video is of Jay turning around, another effect which I saw in AWGE video.
It is the repetition of the model cut out and moving across the scene. I did this by
screen shotting the scene, putting it in Photoshop, cutting out Jay then saving it as a
PNG. I then implemented this into the video, creating a mini animation with it. I then
copy and pasted it but timing it very slightly after each other giving it the repetition
effect.
The fifth effect is the range and contrast being turned up slowly with the
result becoming very distorted. I have seen effects like this used in videos before and
feel it really helps to drive the aesthetic and look of the brand. I did this by cutting out
the clip, setting the timer at normal level then at the end turned it to max to slowly
increase the effect in the clip.
The sixth effect, which I have created, is the picture edit. I took different pictures at
the same location then edited the base picture with other pictures to create this effect.
I saved JPGS of each layer being added, then turned it into a short animation.

15. Experiment2
I created a logo for the made-up brand "Vampyre“. I chose a suitable
castle and bats from google as free PNG’s. I found the text on ‘da font’, the
font was called Gothikella. After I layered the images and text, I chose the
colour red because it represents blood, which is what vampires drink. For
the castle PNG I used different blending modes, and effects, to make it
appear dark and surrounded it with mist to add to the gloomy, gothic
atmosphere. I also used a PNG of a colony of bats, using the blending
mode effects to produce more texture and make it stand out from the
black castle background. Finally, I used the blending mode on the
"Vampyre" text to increase the texture and make it look darker and as
though it had been scratched.
16. Experiment3
The photography experiment went well. I learnt how different lighting
can affect the mood and emotion of an image. In addition I began to
understand how the camera worked in photography mode and how it
looked and was styled. The flash would go off after a few shots
independently, however I found the flash added a greater, dramatic effect
to the picture of Jay standing against the wall, as it created the effect of
looking like a mug shot. I want to incorporate shots like this into my work
as you can add effects to it easily in software like Premier Pro.
17. Experiment4
In experiment 4 I made an animated graphic of a spinning logo of a
heartagram. I obtained the image from the internet, then edited out the
logo on Photoshop. I then put it on Aftereffects and watched the YouTube
tutorial on editing the background, in order to affect the
gradient colouring on logo. I then increased the thickness of the logo, so
you can see it as it spins.
