Editor's Notes
Nurse leaders and managers apply principlism when they respect the rights, responsibilities, and professional autonomy of their nursing staff members.
it is fundamental for the nurse–patient relationship, and requires nurses to be loyal, truthful, fair, and advocates for patients.
Devon had never agreed to designation as essential personnel (Tiers 1 and 2).
– You can NOT hold someone accountable for something that was not previously deemed their responsibility or obligated task. To maintain a culture of safety this nurse cannot be punished for something that was not previously deemed to be his responsibility. Whether another found him jumping in to help out to be the right thing to do or not that is their opinion and cannot force that upon a staff member who is off the clock and was not deemed responsibilities prior to the event.
I feel like administration is out of line for saying “leaving the hospital at that time will constitute job abandonment and would, therefore, be reported to the Missouri State Board of Nursing for possible disciplinary action.’ - this almost seems to be a threat to scare the nurse.
How can Devin be held accountable for something he did not agree to.
The nurse may face a internal wager with himself on whether him not helping is going to cause harm or maybe justify his actions by saying he is doing no harm by stepping away from a situation he was not previously prepared for.
The Management has to be fair in respecting that this nurse was not deemed responsible for being apart of the response team and is not obligated.
