This document discusses five considerations for avoiding poor project outcomes: 1) Ensuring the project outcome is aligned with organizational strategies and priorities; 2) Linking organizational performance metrics to the project outcome; 3) Understanding decision points as opportunities to further assess feasibility rather than go/no-go decisions; 4) Distinguishing between process and workflow to meet stakeholder needs; and 5) Focusing on effectiveness over efficiency by ensuring core capabilities are strengthened before implementing new technologies. Following these considerations can help improve the realization of project outcomes.
Is your Organization Aligned to Tackle a Major Initiative?Tamim Rahman
This slideshare will discuss some of the challenges faced by organizations in an increasingly complex ecosystem. With increasing complexity, it becomes ever-more important that all disciplines involved with change and transformation improve their collaboration, communication and understanding of each others roles and governance.
How to scale a program painlessly, Which scaling models work well, what parameters need to be considered for a program, How to use metrics for a large program
HOW TO BECOME A QUALITY MANAGER - CAREER, JOB SCOPE AND CERTIFICATIONSSprintzeal
A Quality Manager can be defined as an assurance manager in quality. The Quality manager helps an organization with various crucial points and defensive protocols with time for better operations. The manager's responsibility is basically to create the quality policy and achieve the set of quality objectives. The Quality Manager of a company must ensure that the products or services an organization provides must be in line with both the internal and external requirements of the customers' needs and the compliance with the standards and legal requirements.
Although many small business owners, managers, and entrepreneurs do not actively seek process development as a solution, broken processes and lack of business rules in marketing, customer service, and sales cost them time, money, customers, and personal satisfaction. This 25-slide presentation answers the questions "Why is Process Development Important for Small Businesses/Microbusinesses?" and "How can Small Businesses/Microbusinesses Improve?"
Whatever perspective is ultimately seen as the most helpful, there seem to be some tangible things companies can do to improve the chances of success.
Experts at many Consultant Companies agree that, like everything else in business management, improving execution is an ongoing process.
However, they say there are steps any company can take that should provide some incremental gains.
We have prepared a presentation to discuss this subject and share some new ideas.
We hope that you enjoy it!

1. Executive Summary
This section should provide general information on the issues surrounding the business problem and the proposed project or initiative created to address it. Usually, this section is completed last after all other sections of the business case have been written. This is because the executive summary is exactly that, a summary of the detail that is provided in subsequent sections of the document.
This business case outlines how the Web Platform (WP) Project will address current business concerns, the benefits of the project, and recommendations and justification of the project. The business case also discusses detailed project goals, performance measures, assumptions, constraints, and alternative options.
1.1. Issue
This section should briefly describe the business problem that the proposed project will address. This section should not describe how the problem will be addressed, only what the problem is.
Because of an expanding client base, Smith Consulting has moved to a de-centralized business model over the last 2 years. As we continue to support more clients in more locations, the administration of our workforce has become more difficult. Until now, many of our internal requirements such as reporting, payroll activities, and resource management have been done via legacy mainframe systems. As our workforce expands in numbers and area, these legacy mainframe systems have become inadequate to effectively manage these administrative activities. This inadequacy is manifested in higher costs and increased employee turnover which we have seen over the last 12 months. In order to more effectively manage our administration, reduce costs, and improve employee turnover, Smith Consulting must move to a web-based application as outlined in this business case for the WP Project. By doing so, employees will assume a greater role in managing their administrative issues, have access to timesheets securely online, and the company can manage its administrat ...

2. Projects are Riskier than You Think…
• Starts with good intentions with
what appears to be a clear scope
and understanding of desired
outcome
• While there may be consensus on
the shared vision, differences in
cause and effect understanding
leads to poor results
• While outcomes are never
assured, the following
considerations can improve their
realization
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 2
3. 5 Key Considerations
1. Organization-Aligned
Expectation of Outcome
2. Organizational Performance
Linked to Outcome
3. Failure to Understand the
Decision Point
4. Confusing the Process Flow with
the Work Flow
5. Replacing Technology to
Increase Effectiveness
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 3
4. Organization-Aligned Expectation of Outcome
• Is the outcome line of business
specific or organization wide? (Ask:
who will benefit most from the
outcome? Are they the sponsor?)
• Is the outcome consistent with other
strategic priorities or division
priorities? - inconsistency will lead
to local instead of global benefits
• Do we understand the impact of the outcome both upstream and
downstream? (i.e. the affect on enterprise capabilities and the
expected performance that is required)
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 4
5. Organizational Performance Linked to Outcome
• Abstract from the solution: what
capability performance is needed to
meet the expected outcome? Instead of:
What is the best case management
solution? Ask: How many cases do we
need to resolve within certain
constraints?
• Does the sponsor support the link of
performance to the expected outcome?
• Is there general agreement that the performance can be achieved
within the known constraints?
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 5
6. Failure to Understand the Decision Point
• The decision point is not always “go” or “nogo”, in many cases it sets the direction for
the next level of detailed understanding:
– Senior Management Understanding: The
current CRM can only serve X accounts and we
need to serve 2X in 12 months that will improve
revenue by 10K. A quick assessment finds the
current CRM can be updated in 10 months at a
cost of 5K.
– The decision point should not be to commit 5K
to a CRM update, but to validate at the next
level of detail (i.e. conceptual) if the above is
possible; if uncertain then we need to further
investigate at the next level of detail
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 6
7. Confusing the Process Flow with the Work Flow
Process Flow:
Work Flow:
1.
1.
Specify ingredients and
quantity
2.
List sequential steps to
combine the ingredients,
specify quality before
proceeding
3.
Specify time and
temperature to bake
4.
Set the cake for a defined
time, instruct on how to
present
Identify
ingredients and
quantity
2.
Combine
ingredients to
form batter
3.
Bake the batter
4.
Set the cake
• Your sponsor and decision makers wants to know the process flow,
those making the change for the project need to know the work flow
http://tamimrahman.com
Slide 7
8. Replacing Technology to Increase Effectiveness
• Technology automates process
activities but the process needs to be
able to achieve the outcome; this is
effectiveness
• Improvements in technology makes us
more efficient – use less resources
• E.g. if our cake is of poor quality
because we are missing ingredients
before we bake, a bigger and faster
mixer will not improve the quality
http://tamimrahman.com
