- 5. Fractions are parts of a whole. They are not indicating how large the whole is. Rather, they describe what part of the whole is represented.
- 6. What fraction of the animals are pigs?
- 7. What whole number names the shaded area? A. 6 B. 1 C. 5
- 8. Denominator • A denominator tells us how many parts the whole is divided into. The denominator is b in the fraction.
- 9. Numerator • The numerator tells us how many of those parts in the denominator that we are dealing with. The numerator is a in the fraction.
- 10. Activity • How many students are in the class? • What fraction of the students are boys? • What fraction of the students are girls? • What fraction of students are wearing short sleeves today? • What fraction of the students have brown hair? Students are to answer the questions in fraction form and draw a pie chart of the fractions. Example: What fraction of the cake was eaten?
