 RESTRICTED PERMUTATION – In restriction only a
small number of objects are considered not all.
 EXAMPLE- Consider the name PATRICK.
a) How many four-letter words can be formed if repetitions are
allowed?
7  7  7  7 = 2401
a) How many four-letter words can be formed if repetitions are
not allowed?
7  6  5  4 = 840
 EXAMPLE 2 - Five people, A, B, C, D, and E are seated on a
bench. In how many ways can they be seated if:
a. A and B wish to be seated together?
SOL -There are 4 groups: AB, C, D and E. Their factorials are 2!, 1!, 1! and 1!
4! 2! 1! 1! 1! = 48 ways
a. A and B must not be together?
5! – 48 = 72 ways
