Topics
› What is OCR?
› Working Process of a OCR
› OCR Implementation
› Advantages and Disadvantages
› Future prospects
Overview
› a technology that enables
converting non-digital files
into editable text files.
› recognition of printed or
written text characters by
a computer
Architecture of OCR
Objectives
› Converting paper document into editable text format
› Speeding up character recognition in document
processing
› Embedding to different application systems
› Creating an OCR System for uni-font and uni-text size
recognition
Methodologies Used in OCR
1. Grayscaling
2. Binarization
3. Noise Removing
4. Image Sharpening
5. Line - Word - Character Segmentation
6. Feature Extraction
OCR(optical character
recognition)
How does it work?
Basic design of OCR
Some Methods is use in OCR
 Grayscaling
 Binarization
 Noise removing
 Image sharping
 Line-word-character segmentation
 Feature extraction
 Classification
Example of Methods
Use case diagram of OCR system
Implementations of
Optical Character
Recognition
OCR Implementation
› Data entry for business documents, e.g. cheque, passport,
invoice, bank statement and receipt
› Automatic number plate recognition
› Automatic insurance documents key information
extraction
› Extracting business card information into a contact list
OCR Implementation
› More quickly make textual versions of printed documents,
e.g. book scanning for Project Gutenberg
› Make electronic images of printed documents searchable,
e.g. Google Books
› Converting handwriting in real time to control a computer
(pen computing)
Advantages and
Disadvantages of
OCR
Benefits are-
› Documents will be text-searchable with OCR processing. From
that, it gives you the advantage of using the name of your
documents, reference numbers, addresses, etc.
› Saving your lots of time when using a digital file rather than
paper documents.
› With low costing OCR processing. The advantage is that it can
improve how your business operates.
› OCR allows you to copy and paste from the document itself
whether that's in PDF format or MS Word format.
Disadvantages are-
› Limited Documents: OCR works best with good quality typed
documents. Handwritten documents cannot be easily read by
OCR software.
› Accuracy : No OCR software is 100 percent accurate. The
number of errors depends upon the quality and type of document,
including the font used.
› Work-Around : OCR has difficulty differentiating between
characters, such as the number zero and a capital "O."
Future
Prospects
Future Prospects
› Recognize and translate languages
Future Prospects
› Assisting blind and visually impaired persons
Future Prospects
› Handwritten documents recognized in future
