In this paper we present the initial phase of a study in development under the project "Teachers' Aids on creating content for learning environments" (taccle2.eu), a European project funded by the European Union through the Comenius multilateral program (517726-LLP-1-2011-1-BE-COMENIUS-CMP). More concretely, we present the work that is being developed for the creation of a set of learning activities for the creative arts and cultural education curricula using ICT and Web 2.0 tools. The study was based on the principles of the development methodology approach (Van den Akker, 1999). Following this perspective, and using a focus group strategy, we present here the strategies created to catch the view of a group of art teachers previously selected on the basis of knowledge and experience of using technology in their teaching practice. Assuming the importance of involving teachers in the process of design and development of learning activities, we selected and worked during three months with a group of twelve experienced teachers in the use of the potential of information and communication tools, in particular in the use of Web 2.0 features. The main questions to answer with this joint reflection were: a) In the area of creative arts what kind of learning activities can benefit from the potential of digital technologies available today?; b) How should those activities be organized and presented to less motivated teachers in order to motivate them to use digital technologies in their practices? The preliminary results suggests the idea of structuring activities not individually, but in a "creative project integrator" as a way to bring inexperienced teachers from the arts and culture areas to meet the pedagogical potential of digital technologies and to integrate them more effectively in his or her teaching practice. In fact, the expert teachers interviewed suggest a consensus that the proposed activities should be organized around a common educational goal, albeit with sufficient flexibility that allows inexperienced teachers build or adjust their own content and context. We will conclude with a discussion and a reflection about teacher training strategies based on some suggested examples of imaginative and creative ways and proposals to organise the learning contexts using ICT tools in the case of the arts and culture subjects.

This is the JRC-IPTS invited presentation on policy recommendations for mainstreaming ICT-enabled learning innovations at VISIR International Seminar (25-26 March, Committee of Regions, Brussels). Short description: Technologies for learning are considered as key enablers of educational innovation. However, their full potential is not being realised in formal education settings and major questions are being asked about the sustainability, systemic impact and mainstreaming of ICT-enabled learning innovations (ICT-ELI) in Europe. This presentations focuses on recommendations for immediate strategies and actions to be undertaken by policy-makers at local, regional, national, and EU level to further develop and mainstream ICT-ELI with systemic impact, contributing to the modernisation of Education and Training systems in Europe. The recommendations were developed in the context of the 'Up scaling Creative Classrooms in Europe (SCALE CCR) project, carried out by JRC-IPTS on behalf of the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, based on desk research; case reports from Europe and Asia; continuous stakeholders consultations; and in-depth expert interviews. The final set of recommendations was further validated and prioritised through an online consultation with 149 educational stakeholders. The recommendations were clustered into seven areas presenting a holistic agenda to guide the further development and mainstreaming of ICT-ELI: Content and Curricula; Assessment; School Staff Professional Development; Research; Organisation and Leadership; Connectedness; and Infrastructure. The number and variety of the recommendations provided depict the complexity of ICT-ELI and the systemic approach needed for their mainstreaming across Education and Training systems in Europe.

This study assessed the confidence levels of 675 trainee teachers at Universiti Putra Malaysia in integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into their teaching. The study found that the trainee teachers were generally quite confident in their ability to integrate ICT. However, some groups showed higher levels of confidence than others. Male trainee teachers, those with teaching experience, and those studying vocational subjects reported higher confidence levels than their counterparts. The study suggests that confidence in using ICT is an important factor in realizing Malaysia's goal of developing technology-integrated smart schools.

[Vânia] “Digital geomedia have ‘made their way’ to the general public. Despite its potential for Geographic Education, studies reveal low levels of digital geomedia integration in educational contexts (Höhnle et al. 2010). Education systems in many different countries have already realized its relevance and potential and have therefore developed new strategies to implement its use as an integral part of the curricula (Milson et. al 2011). While the integration into the educational standards, curricula and even workbooks in geography education mostly took place in the last decade (i.e. German Association for Geography, 2007) a gap in the geography teacher education arised. The pool of active geography teachers needs additional trainings to apply these new technologies, while the future teachers still have to wait for an appropriate higher education. The integration of digital geomedia into the geography teacher education was mostly optional and entered the curricula some years later (Schubert et.al. 2010) as higher education systems are rather inflexible bodies. This makes teacher trainings in digital geomedia indispensable as already found out in several works (eg. Audet & Paris 1997, de Lange 2006). However, the understanding of how to train teachers for the integration of digital geomedia in educational formal contexts, changing teacher´s educational practices, requires more elaboration and is thus worthy of investigation. “

Constuctivist Learning Environments (2003) (students learn best when they engage in active, constructive, collaborative, intentional, complex, contextual, conversational, and reflective learning activities), that derive the “Characteristics of the Learning Environment”: active; collaborative; constructive; authentic; goal directed; Combined with the ACOT “Levels of Technology integration in the curriculum”, that details the mentioned evolutionary process of technology integration on instructional practices, in 5 stages: entry, adoption, adaptation, appropriation and invention (Allsopp and Hohlfeld, 2007).” “The result of this correlation is a matrix with twenty five cells of five characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (intentional, reflective, and responsible), authentic (complex and contextual) and collaborative (conversational), cross-referenced to the levels of technology integration: entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation (Allsopp and Hohlfeld, 2007). This model applies to teacher´s teaching practices as well as to student´s learning processes. In each cell are available videos illustrating possible integrations of technology in classroom, and is described the role of the teacher, the student learning process and the instructional setting. It´s also supplied a grade level index, listing proper examples of resources for each Level of Technology Integration in the curriculum (Entry; Adoption; Adaptation; Infusion; and Transformation), according to grade levels. The expected relevance of using this tool relies, concerning the aim of this study, on the argument that once the teachers discover their level of technology integration, it may influence the conception of lesson plans to achieve a higher level. It can therefore be used for teacher´s self-reflexivity and self-evaluation on their own abilities to integrate technology in teaching, as well as for targeting improvements and monitoring progress towards those objectives in the integration of digital geomedia for learning improvement.”
