My 2014 ESA talk on the role of termites and elephants in shaping plant communities and landscape heterogeneity. On one hand, termites and elephants change plant communities by themselves. Termites create mounds which have different soil, nutrients, and water availability. These mounds form separate plant "islands" that are home to distinct plant communities. Elephants, meanwhile, eat mostly trees and shrubs, and this diet can also change plant communities by reducing the numbers and abundance of certain plant species.
Together, however, it appears that these two species also affect each other. Elephants reduce trees, which means there are fewer resources available for termites. As a result, termites form fewer mounds in areas where elephants are present. This changes landscape-scale patterns in plant communities.

This study examined carbon stock, tree diversity, and soil organic carbon in dry zone homegardens in Sri Lanka. The researchers found that (1) above-ground biomass carbon stocks varied widely between homegardens but were generally lower than forest carbon stocks, (2) soil organic carbon levels were higher in homegardens than adjacent agricultural lands, and (3) small homegardens had higher tree diversity and carbon stocks per unit area than medium or large homegardens. Session 2.2 carbon stock and tree diversity sri lanka
This study examined carbon stock, tree diversity, and soil organic carbon in dry zone homegardens in Sri Lanka. The researchers found that (1) above-ground biomass carbon stocks varied widely between homegardens but were generally lower than forest carbon stocks, (2) soil organic carbon levels were higher in homegardens than adjacent agricultural lands, and (3) small homegardens had higher tree diversity and carbon stocks per unit area than medium or large homegardens. The implications are that improving water access and soil fertility in homegardens could boost carbon storage, crop diversity, and food security while also providing benefits for climate change mitigation.

The effects of contemporary and previous land management practices are reflected in the present-day condition of native vegetation. In order to properly manage land for productive use or to restore it to its 'natural' condition, it is important to know the changes that have taken place to the use of the land, and the cumulative effect of those changes. Assessing and reporting the resilience of native vegetation using metrics of structure, composition and function is discussed. The system, VAST-2, has been developed in the Australian context, where land management was relatively unchanged for some tens of thousands of years prior to European settlers who arrived some hundred years hence. This reference state provides a structure in which to compile, interpret and sequence data gathered in the past about changes in management practices and the effects of these practices on the condition of native plant communities. Early settlers and subsequent land managers have modified and fragmented the native vegetation thereby transforming many landscapes.
