Advanced technologies as "DOC, DPF, SCR" to reduce Diesel engines harmful em...Omar Qasim
Diesel engines play a dominant role in transport because of their lower fuel consumption and higher thermal efficiency. However, the high particulate matter (PM) emissions and high rat of the NOx emission of diesel engines also cause a series of environmental and social problems. several studies investigated the relationship between particulate matter emission and human health and found that 4.2 million deaths (7.6% of all global deaths) caused by outdoor fine particulate air pollution in 2015 and particulate matter (PM 2.5) was the fifth highest ranking risk factor for death in the world.
International Journal of Engineering Research and Applications (IJERA) is an open access online peer reviewed international journal that publishes research and review articles in the fields of Computer Science, Neural Networks, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Food Technology, Textile Engineering, Nano Technology & science, Power Electronics, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computational mathematics, Image processing, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, VLSI Testing & Low Power VLSI Design etc.
Air Pollution can be defined as “ degradation of natural atmospheric composition by any means of anthropogenic, geogenic , or biogenic sources, which may cause a short-term or long-term adverse effect to both human beings and flora & fauna” .
2. INTRODUCTION
• European emission standards define the acceptable limits for exhaust
emissions of new vehicles sold in EU member states.
• Currently, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbon (THC),
non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate
matter (PM) are regulated for most vehicle types, including cars, lorries,
trains, tractors
• For each vehicle type, different standards apply.

5. Toxic emission: stages and legal framework
• The stages are typically referred to as Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 for Light DutyVehicle
standards.
• Euro 1 (1993):
• For passenger cars - 91/441/EEC.
• Also for passenger cars and light trucks- 93/59/EEC.
• Euro 2 (1996) for passenger cars - 94/12/EC (& 96/69/EC)
• For motorcycle - 2002/51/EC (row A) - 2006/120/EC
• Euro 3 (2000) for any vehicle - 98/69/EC
• For motorcycle - 2002/51/EC (row B) - 2006/120/EC
• Euro 4 (2005) for any vehicle - 98/69/EC (& 2002/80/EC)
• Euro 5 (2008/9) and Euro 6 (2014) for light passenger and commercial vehicles - 715/2007/EC
7. CATALYTIC CONVERTER
• A catalytic converter is a device that uses a catalyst to convert three harmful
compounds in car exhaust into harmless compounds.
• In a catalytic converter, the catalyst (in the form of platinum and palladium)
is coated onto a ceramic honeycomb or ceramic beads that are housed in a
muffler-like package attached to the exhaust pipe.
• The catalyst helps to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. It
converts the hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. It also converts
the nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen and oxygen.
8. Myths about motorcycles
• The biggest myth about motorcycles is that they pollute less than cars do.
• It is clear from the table that motorcycle pollution allowed by regulations is
heavier on some pollutants.
Automobiles (g/km) Motorcycles (g/km)
Pollutant Euro-2 (2003) Euro-2 (2006) 2003 2006
CO 2.2 1.0 5.5 2.0
CH 0.5 0.2 1.0-1.2 0.3-0.8
NOx 0.15 0.3 0.15
9. SASS (SECONDARY AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM)
• Spraying technology governing clean air (O2) into the exhaust tract exhaust
ports and react with combustion gases
• CO is converted in to carbon dioxide
• HC is converted in to water
10. PAIR Control SolenoidValve
• The purpose of the PAIR system is to reduce pollution emissions from the engine. It
does this by injection fresh air directly into the exhaust gasses when these are
routed into the exhaust system. The fresh air - containing oxygen - gives a fuller
combustion of exhaust gasses.
• Brief negative pressure pulses in the exhaust system at idle speed sucks the
secondary air through reed valves in the valve cover and through the PAIR solenoid
valve from the air filter housing. By opening and closing the PAIR solenoid valve the
engine control module ECM can turn the secondary air injection on and off.

12. CONCLUSION
As the advancement in technology is increasing day by day the euro standard
will further proceed in future and new standard will develop and new devices
will be made to produce less harmful gases or either no harmful gases and get
the maximum efficient engine with lesser poisonous gases. So our
environment will become more healthy and safe for the human beings.
