MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
What is an organ .?
 a part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital
function, such as the heart or liver in humans.
The Kidneys
 The kidneys are apart of the urinary
system.
 The kidneys filter waste products out of
the blood and removes the from the body
.
 The kidneys produce erythropoietin, which
stimulates red blood cell synthesis, and
renin, which helps control salt and water
balance and blood pressure.
What is the Integumentary System?
 The integumentary system is the organ system that protects the body from various
kinds of damage, such as loss of water or abrasion from outside
 the integumentary system work with other systems in your body to maintain and
support the conditions that your cells, tissues, and organs need to function
properly.
Combing forms
A modified form of an independent word that occurs only in combination with
words, affixes, or other combining forms to form compounds or derivatives, as
electro- (from electric) in electromagnet or geo- (from Greek geō-, from gē "earth") in
geochemistry.
Example - Cry/o
 cry/o – means cold
Examples from chpt 3 page 71, Cryosurgery which means a use of a extreme cold to
freeze and destroy tissues.
Cryosurgery help terminates or maintain blisters, pressure ulcers and some skin
cancers.
Example Hidr/o
 hidr/o – means sweat
Example from chpt 3 page 58, Anhidrosis in which means abnormal condition of no
sweat.
Example Cyan/o
 Cyan/o – means blue
Example from chpt 3 page 58, Cyanosis which means bluish tint to the skin caused by
deoxygenated blood
. Cyanosis is a physical sign causing bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous
membranes
Example Rhytid/o
 Rhytid/o – means wrinkle
Example from chpt 3 page 71, Rhytidectomy which means a surgical removal of
excess skin to eliminate wrinkles.
Surgical removals such as lap bands, face lifts and fat transfers.
Example Seb/o
 Seb/o – means oil
Examples from chpt 3 page 67, Sebaceous cyst which pertains to a sac under the skin
filled with sunburn or oil from a sebaceous gland.
Example lip/o
 Lip/o – means fat
Example from chpt 3 page 60, Lipoma which mean a fatty mess
