Semiology is the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. It examines the relationship between signifiers, or things that represent concepts, and signifieds, the concepts themselves. There are different levels of meaning, from the literal denotation to deeper connotations influenced by culture. Semiological analysis can examine signs individually, in sequence, or in the context of narratives, genres, discourses, and mythologies. Both qualitative and quantitative content analysis are used to study media texts.
