Tenses
The word tense come from Latin word “ Tempus” mean time
Definition of tense : is the form in which a verb is used to express when an
action is , was or will happen
Past present future
There are four form of present tense
• Present simple
• Present continuous
• Present perfect
• Present perfect continuous
Present simple : to talk about an action which happen on regular basis
subject + base form of verb+(s)
subject + not+ does/ do not + verb
does / do + subject + verb ?
Present simple
Present simple is used to express
• To show a fact or something that is always true
Eva lives in Canada
• For activities that we do daily -regularly or habitually
Eva washes her garden on Sunday
• To express thoughts, feelings, opinions and beliefs
Eva is happy
• For a planned action or an event that will happen in the future
the meeting stats at noon
• For schedules, plans
• Eva works tonight
Present continuous
Present continuous : express action that are happening now or that are in prograss
subject + am , is , are + verb(ing)
subject + am , is , are + not + verb(ing)
am , is , are + v(ing) + ?
● Action that are happening now
Eva is watching television
● Action that are in progress
They are completing a project together
Present perfect
Action that began in the past and counties to the present and action have recently
stropped
subject + has/ had + past participle of verb
(v +ed)
• actions in the past of indefinite time
I have traveled to Paris.
• actions that started in the past but continue to present
she has worked for the bank for five years
Present perfect continuous
Subject + has/had + been + present participle (and “-ing” to end of the
verb)
• actions that began in the past but continue to present
The baby has been crying for hours.
• actions that have recently stopped
I have been waiting for you.
