The Present Perfect Tenses
Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous both describe recent past
actions that have certain relation with the present. And sometimes there are little or no
difference in meaning between both of them.
Present Perfect Simple Present Perfect Continuous
We use the Present Perfect Simple to
indicate:
1. Past experiences.
Have you ever had a serious accident?
2. Activities that started in the past and
continue to the present.
My teacher has worked here since 1999.
3. Actions that were recently completed.
Conny has just finished her online test.
4. To say something has happened before
expected.
JP has already washed the plates.
5. To ask or indicate that an action
expected to happen hasn't happened.
We haven't been in Hooliwood yet.
We use the Present Perfect Continuous to
indicate:
1. An activity which began in the past and
continue at the present moment.
My children have been practicing sports
since they were 10 .
2. An activity with a result in the present.
You have been living in Arica for years.
Emphasize the RESULT of an activity
(what, how many/much, how often)
Emphasize theDURATION of an activity
(how long, since when)
HAVE / HAS + PAST PARTICIPLE VERB HAVE / HAS + BEEN + VERBING
Remember!!!
SINCE Describe the moment when the experiences started in the past that
continue up to the moment of speaking. It is a point in time. (E.g. June,
1976, etc.).
We haven't seen him since his birthday.
We haven't played soccer since May.
FOR Describe the duration of an activity that started in the past. It is used
with length of time (e.g. four years, two months, etc.)
Ken has studied English for two months.
Barnie hasn't come to school for two days.
