Simple past tense
The simple past tense shows that an activity or situation began and ended at a particular time in the past. Adverbs of time
used in the simple past tense are yesterday, last....(week/day/month/year), .............ago.
(+) subject + verb past + object/complement
e.g. Tania visited her uncle a week ago.
I dreamt about you last night.
(-) subject + did not (didn’t) + verb base + object/complement
e.g. Tania didn’t visit her uncle a week ago.
I didn’t dream about you last night.
(?) did + subject + verb base + object/complement?
e.g. Did Tania visit her uncle a week ago?
Did you dream about me last night?
Notes:
There are two forms of verbs past:
1. Regular verbs are always ended by –d/-ed
2. Irregular verbs are not ended by –d/-ed
3. The To be in the past tense are was(singular subjects) and were(plural subjects)
e.g. I was very happy yesterday since I could do the test well.
The boys were not at home when the fire happened.
