Firstly, I thought it would be useful to paint a picture of Northumberland for you. We face a number of challenges (I’m sure that many of you face similar ones)
Large geographical spread.
Northernmost county in England bordering Cumbria to the west, County Durham and Tyne & Wear to the south and Scotland to the North.
Northumberland is the largest English county by area covering 5013km2 (1936 m2).
Population of 315, 000 (but this doesn’t include our woolly friends!!).
Employ 10,000 staff (6,000 in schools)
Dispersed workforce (Agile & Flexible – reducing numbers in central locations)
Communication challenges, Accommodation Review & adopting New Ways of Working)
Efficiency savings
Reduced capacity and workforce (loss of experience / need to up skill and develop right people at right time)
Family of Services – delivered in conjunction with a number of strategic partners – housing services, adult social care, leisure services, Town & Parish Councils
Need to share / collaborate / communicate / learn and deliver together
All have different IT operating systems / infrastructure / hardware
Future for Northumberland is that self service and digital access will be the norm (priority of our Digital Strategy – iNorthumberland to share consistent messages around importance of channel shift)
For a number of years we have been persuading managers to move from paper processes to optimising the LMS
Becoming an Agile Workforce - need to be able to pull content and access learning at right time, place and pace
Presented with challenges – different types of content to different devices. Recognising shift to mobile / smart devices
Engagement / learner experience - need to develop content that provides high quality user experience across all platforms
Authoring Tool limitations – we saw the possibilities that ADAPT could present and recognised we needed to prepare in terms of:
Our own development – new set of instructional design skills – support from learning pool (developers and Academy) and online facilitation skills through COLF / CDOL
Getting the organisation ready – Virtual classroom, Encore, Webinars / Learning Hours
Developing ADAPT content - worked with number of iterations of ADAPT from BETA through to current version
We have had to be tactical about where and when we have deployed ADAPT - piloted in distinct parts of the organisation and mainly bespoke content / specific audiences
First module developed with support from LP – COSHH – cleansing and neighbourhood services employees – parts of the workforce had been kitted out with mobile devices (phones /tablets)
Some initial negativity around using own devices / concerns over download capacity but generally well received. Helped to identify other opportunities to move to mobile content / use of Encore / video including H & S content
Private Fostering – Triggered by Ofsted inspection – need to raise awareness of Private Fostering – counteract myths and assumptions
Provided support to a dispersed, non-traditional LA audience – our own workforce, 170 schools, churches, voluntary sector
Preceded by Webinar / media presentation
Followed by completion of ADAPT eLearning module
Feedback – positive – look and feel and ease of navigation – hungry for more
Infection Prevention & Control – module created for non-clinical workforce. Shared with commissioned health services
Two versions of module (Authoring Tool v ADAPT)
Completion of ADAPT version out performed Authoring Tool by 4:1
This approach supported existing Clinical Development Programme for GP’s & Dentists which already used mobile learning
Browser compatibility / restrictions which have hampered wider ADAPT rollout are now being resolved
Hopeful that ADAPT will increase opportunities for mobile learning / levels of engagement / increase participation and completion
Wider programme of ADAPT development incorporating improved storyboarding, graphics and themes. Titles will include Induction to County Hall and our BE Northumberland Programme. Selecting the right opportunities to share ADAPT with a wider audience. Identifying which ADAPT modules from LP Recommends catalogue we can pull down and rebrand now that we have our own theme and template in ADAPT Builder. Need to be brave enough to “switch off” other channels.
Maintenance training / consistency – content that needs to be repeated / refreshed – next modules will be in ADAPT – learning will believe they are completing something new
We will need to continue our own learning / develop new skills – use support and expertise from LP, Academy, ADAPT eBook, Webinars and KEEP SHARING !!
New drawn characters commissioned with LP – helping to develop engaging, modern looking content which tells a story and has personality. Characters will become identifiable / connection with our workforce
BE Northumberland Programme – content that is relevant to all employees, elected members and partner organisations – good opportunity to launch ADAPT content across the organisation
