Essay on Yoruba Art and Culture
?Any work of art owes its existence to the people and culture from which it has emerged. It has a
functional and historical relationship with that culture.? Michael W. Conner, PhD#
Staffs are carried and danced with by priestesses and priest in the Sango cult, dedicated to Sango, the
Yoruba deity of thunder and lighting. The female figure represents a worshiper of Shango. The
majority of the Yoruba people live on the west coast of Africa in Nigeria, but can also be found in
many other places, as they are one of the largest cultural classifications in Africa. There are
approximately 40 million Yoruba world wide. As a matter of fact, most of the slaves brought to
America were Yoruban, and descendants of their tribes can be found ... Show more content on

Divination trays, staffs, stools, dance wands, and many other sacred objects are carved out of wood.
The men in particular are responsible for woodcarving, utilizing the axe, the adze, the chisel, and the
knife. The inspiration, impetus and objective for each piece is what will determine the style and form
of art that is being created by each individual. Although the art forms created by the Yoruba are used
to decorate and to affirm their social standing,, Their art is also deeply rooted with their spiritual
commitment, especially where the art is used as part of a ritual or as a means of communicating with
their Gods.
There are over 400 deities that are worshipped by the Yoruba, which are called Orisas. Certain Gods
are worshiped by every Yoruban, but there are specific Gods that are worshiped individually by certain
families or even towns. Every Yoruban makes regular offerings to the gods that they do worship.
One particular God, Sango, resides in the sky. He is the God of Thunder and he is responsible for
producing the lightening bolts and thunder that comes to the earth. It is the belief of the Yoruba that If
he is offended or angered, he sends bolts of lightening to the ground to ignite the offender?s house, or
even to strike and kill them dead.
Although every worshipper of the God Sango, the thunder god, owns a carved wand as a personal
shrine, it may

Early Aurignacians
The early Aurignacian layer contains only lithics and lacks the art and ornamentation pieces found in
the other three Aurignacian sections. Hahn originally wanted to call this layer proto Aurignacian, This
suggestion by Hahn related to his observation that AH III at Geißenklösterle lacked split based bone
points, which he considered the hallmark of the early Aurignacian (Nicholas J. Conard 2011).
Continued research shows that this is not the case, the Aurignacian occupation in the area fits the time
period of the early Aurignacian and not the proto Aurignacian sometimes referred to as the Fumanian,
with its geographic focus in Mediterranean Europe (Bon 2002; Teyssandier and Liolios 2003; Bolus
2004; Conard and Bolus 2006), (Nicholas J. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first answer could be as simple as they wiped them out through warfare. Neanderthals are thought
to have lived in smaller groups and not to have reproduced as much as modern humans due to
exploiting fewer resources, this would have given the Aurignacian people an easy advantage, but it is
also commonly accepted that it would not have been needed. It is thought that through better use of
resources and a willingness to take more resources that H.Sapiens Sapiens could have merely slowly
taken over from Neanderthals by taking up all the resources for their growing population resulting in
slowly starving the remaining Neanderthals. A good example of the different mindset between the two
groups when it came to food is what happened to cave bears when modern humans arrived.
Neanderthals and cave bears seem to have coexisted in a dynamic equilibrium with both species able
to survive in the same region over long periods of time. With the arrival of modern humans this
dynamic equilibrium was disturbed. Cave bear hunting was intensified and more bones show
anthropogenic modifications and even direct evidence of hunting (Münzel et al. 2001; Münzel and
Conard 2004b), (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It wasn t only food that the groups would have had to
compete for, but also resources for crafting of tools, art, and instruments as well as fire wood. The
Middle Paleolithic and Aurignacian are characterized by concentrations of burnt bone, indicating that
the environment did not always contain sufficient quantities of wood for the heating and lighting
needs of both populations (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It is commonly thought that without the
introduction on modern humans Neanderthals would not have gone extinct. Neanderthal culture was
not necessarily inferior, merely different and not suited to compete in the style it was forced

A Pair Of Silk Stockings, A Shameful Affair, And The Story...
What is social expectation and how does it affects one s life? In the short stories A Pair of Silk
Stockings , A Shameful Affair , and The Story of Hour by Kate Chopin from the novel The Awakening
and Selected Stories of Kate Chopin, they uncover the expected roles and responsibilities of women in
the early 1900s. Through imagery and diction, Chopin reveals that people tend to fall into others
expectations upon their marriage and even before it, which leads to lose their personal freedom and
gain desires in conflict with social expectations.
First, numerous people especially women in the early 1900s fall into others expectations upon and
before their marriage. In A Pair of Silk Stockings and A Shameful Affair , two of their main characters
are women, and they both fall into societal expectations about them where they later lose their
freedom. For example, in A Pair of Silk Stocking , Chopin targets the social expectation upon one s
marriage where she describes the usual mother s responsibilities by saying A dollar or two should be
added to the price usually paid for Janie s shoes, which would insure their lasting an appreciable time
longer than they usually did () As Chopin utilizes imagery, this infers an image of what Mrs. Sommers
plans to do as a mother, who she carefully plan her money to buy new clothes for her children.
Moreover, the word insures means to arrange compensation for damage that is done to the event,
whereas the word appreciable means large enough to be noticed. Yet, both connotes a stable lasting
which further reveal that one of the mother s roles that is expected by the society is to know how use
the money wisely for their children without falling in debt. Thus, the responsibilities of a mother have
overloaded her where she later turn in self indulgent. Likewise, Chopin not only portrays how women
fall into others expectations upon their marriage yet they also fall into it before their marriage. In the
short story A Shameful Affair , the author describes the primary character as Mildred Kraummer, who
she falls in love with the one of the farmhands. While Mildred meets him fishing, they accidentally
give a kiss where the author narrates He kissed her lips... Shame

How Does American Apparel Portray Women
In advertising, companies tend to use images in which they believe will help to promote and sell their
product. One of the most common techniques that is seen in today s society is the stereotypical
portrayal of women, who tend to pose rather promiscuously as seen in Figure One. These types of
images portray women as sex objects or as submissive housewives to their husbands. This comes into
context with the advertising in which American Apparel portrays.
American Apparel has drawn a lot of attention for their marketing techniques as well as advertising.
One of the most controversial aspects to the company is its sexualization, objectification and
exploitation of women as well as the pressure the brand places on individuals to conform to normative

American Apparel is well known for its provocative imagery, artistic photograph and their attitude on
free expression within the fashion industry, but it is clear that to a certain extent American Apparel
crosses the line by objectifying and demeaning women (Martha De Lacey , 2013). This clearly has an
influence on young girls in today s society who glance through American Apparel s advertisements
and may have also added to the increase in mental and physical health as well as young girls
confidence. According to statistics, eating disorders have increasingly become an issue in society
today as well as the media s sexualized images of women are constant reminders of what society
wants all girls to be like. One of the many examples would be Figure

Beowulf : The Battle Against Grendel, Grendel s Mother and The Dragon The poet has depicted
Beowulf , the prince of The Geats, as a courageous heroic man of the Anglo Saxon era. He signifies
the true valiant character because he is willing to risk his life for the people and holds strong in his
values by returning a favour. Beowulf helps Hrothgar, The king of Denmark who had once done his
father a great favour. Beowulf accepts to defeat Grendel, a horrible demon who lives in the
swamplands of Hrothgar s kingdom. In this epic poem, Beowulf has three primary opponents:

devastates everything that comes across his way. Eventually, Fate brings the dragon and Beowulf to
combat. Accompanied by Wiglaf, the only one who stands with him against the dragon, both face a

The Tempest Ariel Manipulation
Shakespeare s play The Tempest is filled with dramatic scenes of illusion and magic often times
influenced by music. This is made prevalent in one of the first encounters that Shakespeare writes of
Prospero s manipulation with music to control the character. In Act 1 scene ii Ariel was sent out by the
all powerful and mighty Prospero to lure the character of Ferdinand onto the island. Ultimately to have
Prospero s daughter marry Ferdinand. Ariel being invisible sings, Come unto these yellow sands, and
then take hands. Curtsied when you have, and kissed the wild waves whist. Foot it featly here and
there, and, sweet sprites, bear the burden. Hark, hark! (CITE). Ferdinand responds to the invisible
music and singing he hears by saying, With its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thence I have followed it, or it hath drawn me (CITE). Also early on in the play, in Act 2 scene ii the
reader again sees the musical power of Ariel through the commands of Prospero. Ariel is unseen to the
characters but in the eyes of the characters, something mystical makes them fall asleep. The only ones
whom remain awake are Sebastian, and Antonio. They question why they did not get tired. With the
music Ariel puts the characters into a deep sleep in order to listen to the conspiracy plans of the other
two characters. Ariel wants to prevent the murder of Alonso and sings in the ear of the sleeping
Gonzalo, in order to wake him up. He sings, While you were here do snoring lie, open eyed
conspiracy his time doth take. If of life you keep a care, shake off slumber and beware. Awake. Awake
(CITE). Ariel s message in this song is very direct and clear, in contrast to the first song, in which
Gonzalo suddenly awakes. In both of these scenes it is not so much the sound of the music produced
by Ariel that has control over the characters but more so over the words that are spoken by him. In an

Bourdieu Habitus Concept
Introduction The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu approaches the concept of power using a similar
concept with Foucault which they presume that power is that there are always structures that are
formed by human relationships which dictates how people should behave. These structures influence
the individual social life. However, Foucault criticized that he has concept that is radical and broader
making it difficult to identify any social context of where the action of exercise of power occurs
(Gaventa, 2003). Unlike Bourdieu who narrows down it in terms of symbolically mediated interaction
between the Habitus and social structure (Bourdieu, 1991). Culture is example of this symbolic
interaction. The main aim of the essay is to first define culture. Secondly, define what Habitus is and
explain how it develops through cultural capital. Furthermore, explain how is subject to change.
Moreover the essay will link concept Habitus to socio spatial dialect relationship. Also providing

Company and competitors: Kingsford is a well known brand of charcoal for barbeque purpose in US.
Clorox purchased it in 1973. It accounts for 9% of Clorox s revenue in 2000. Kingsford only have two
main competitors in the market, Royal Oak and private labels.
Key trend and key success factor: Grilling is a popular event in US. Common reasons for barbecuing
are great flavor, outdoor social activities, change of pace etc. Charcoal and gas grilling are the most
common methods. The success of Kingsford is due to discipline in delivering constant marketing,
sales action and message communicated across different parties. The key sales techniques are high

Artifacts in Computer Science
Computers are what run society today, everywhere we look we see devices that are run off of
computers and microcomputers such as phones, computers, tablets, and even vehicles. It is now the
way the world communicates with each other, because of computers it is a much smaller world in
which we live. Computers have been around for such a short period of time, yet they seem to be
advancing faster than anything else; this is because there is an infinite number of ways computers can
be implemented to help individuals. Thirty years after the first computer was developed, computers
had already been altered to read and save information on magnetic tapes that ran through the
computer. The picture below was taken at East Carolina University (ECU) in the mid 1970 s of a man
changing tapes in a tape computer (Computer Data Tapes). 40 years after this picture was taken, this
form of computers is almost unrecognizable by society today, due to dramatic advancements in
computer technology. When the first programmable mainframe computer was built in 1946, the
technology was utilized to help people with mathematical calculations, problem solving, and could
even run small simple simulations while only taking up 1,000 square feet (Bestofmedia). Prior to the
1950 s, vacuum tubes had been used in all computers to indicate on or off for processing. In the early
1950 s transistors which used less energy, produced less heat, and were more reliable swept the
computer field, making vacuum tubes

Epidemiology Of Obesity
Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide and its prevalence is increasing at an
alarming rate (Barness et al, 2007). For thousands of years obesity was rarely seen, it was not until the
20th century that it became common, some much so that in 1997, the World Health Organization
(WHO) formally recognized obesity as a global epidemic (Caballero, 2007).
Overweight and obesity now affects at least 1.7 billion people. With the largest proportion in
developing countries: In 2010, almost 2 billion people of the world s population are overweight (BMI
between 25 and 29.9 kg/m2) and more than half a billion are obese (BMI 30 kg/m2). Using standard
international criteria by 2015, the figure will be nearer 2.3 billion overweight and ... Show more

The increased prevalence of obesity among high income groups in nonindusrialized countries may
have changed as non indusrialized countries become more affluent and obesity becomes more
prevalent in individuals who have low socioeconomic status (Monteiro et al., 2004).
Egypt studied the prevelance of obesity and overweight among their populations and results were
annoying. Salem et al. (2002) found that the prevalence of obesity among Egyptian children was
14.7% and 15.08% for male and female respectively.
In United States of America (USA), the prevalence of obesity was 10% among children 2 to 5 years of
age and 15% among adolescents. When children at risk for obesity (overweight) were included, the
values increased to 20% and 30%, respectively. Therefore, 1 of every 4 patients examined by
pediatricians either is obese or is considered to be at high risk for developing this challenging health
problem (Ogden et al.,

Summary Of The Plastic Pink Flamingo A Natural History
In the twentieth century, pink flamingo decorations began popping up everywhere. Jennifer Price
explains why they became so popular in her essay, The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History.
Price believes that American culture only focuses on how the fad began, the irony of how they treats
the real flamingo, as well as the bright colors that are portrayed. The beginning of the popularity of
flamingos is explained in detail during the beginning of the essay. Flamingos became synonymous
with wealth and pizzazz which lead to everyone wanting one. A Florida hotel, the flamingo, was
visited by the rich. Since the country was just coming out of the depression, everyone wished to
appear rich leading to more hotels being built to cater to an eager middle class. The upper class had a
fancy hotel, and all of the country decided to copy them. While the United States were obsessed with
flamingos in the 1900s, Florida residents hunted the bird in prior years. In her second paragraph, Price
calls this new found fad ironic. She explains that Americans hunted flamingos to extinction in Florida
in the late 1850s. Any animal being hunted that much is a travesty, yet not even a century later,
Americans used this graceful bird as a lawn ornament to express leisure and extravagance. These
powerful adjectives demonstrate the level of disregard people ... Show more content on

finance and research team to answer inquiries relating to payments. I have strived to work with the
research program officers to ensure that payments are being scheduled accordingly in regards to their
contracted payment schedules. In the case where the scheduled and subsequent payments are delayed I
work with the research program officers to send an updated payment schedule to accounting. During
my tenure I have made some revisions to the payment requests process that has made the overall
process more efficient. One change that I have introduced is adding the grant request ID to the
payment requests giving accounting and the research team a uniform jargon when referring to grants. I
have created the FedEx Outgoing Checks spreadsheet which is an extensive list of checks that have
mailed out since September. This spreadsheet has been highly useful as it has served as a resource for
the Research Team to easily track the shipment of checks to their awardees. I have proven to be
efficient with communicating the status of payments as well as providing a timeline for payments to
Research Program Officers and awardees. I have also been proactive with solving dilemmas regarding
payments. This

Themes In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner tells a peculiar tale about a mariner and his 200 crewmate who
started a voyage to the equator. Alone, alone, all, all alone, Alone on a wide sea! And never a saint
took pity on My soul in agony. This quote relates to the Ancient Mariner when he was isolated on the
ocean while his crew was laying dead on the ship. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor
Coleridge, is a collection of Lyrical Ballads that tells a story of a mariner and his crew who went on a
journey but ended getting forced to change their destination by a strong storm. They became isolated
and trapped without a way out until an Albatross came and a path was opened for them. As the story
progresses the Ancient Mariner and his crew committed a crime against nature when the Ancient
mariner killed the Albatross the bird of good omen and his crew justified his action. As a result of their
actions, the Ancient Mariner and his crew were faced with an unprecedented consequence. Nature will
seek vengeance against the Ancient Mariner and his crew for killing the Albatross. The Ancient
mariner and his crew faced the consequences of their crime which left the Ancient Mariner in a life in
death state and his crewmate dead. Three themes present in the poem was isolation and crime against
nature and redemption.

After her death, Wang Lung finally acknowledges that O Lan was a unique woman. Certain events

Connotation Of The Duchess Of Malfi
Nathan Patnam Doctor Natalie Grinnell English 201 28 April 2016 Connotation of Widow in The
Duchess of Malfi In Webster s play, The Duchess of Malfi , the Duchess of Malfi is not trusted by her
two brothers. The Cardinal and Ferdinand are worried that the Duchess will marry someone when they
leave to go to Rome, which could jeopardize their ties to the Duchess s inheritance when she dies.
Although the Duchess reassures them both that she will not remarry, Ferdinand and The Cardinal
continually to threaten the Duchess. In one instance Ferdinand threatens the Duchess with their father
s dagger, which not only shows the amount of distrust Ferdinand has for his own sister, but also shows
the power that Ferdinand believes he wields as a man in a patriarchal society. Furthemore, towards the
end of Act I, Ferdinand calls the Duchess a lusty widow even though she has not done anything lustful
(I. ii. 313). The aggressive nature and attitude display by the Duchess s brothers raise the question of
how badly were widowed women viewed in society at this time? To show why Ferdinand and the
Cardinal are so distrustful of their widowed sister, Joseph Swetnam s pamphlet written in 1615,
Arraignment of lewd, idle, orward, and unconstant women, will be used to show how widowed
women were viewed by society. From using this definition parallels can be drawn between the actions
of a typical widow and the Duchess. In Joseph Swetnam s pamphlet, Swetnam writes about how

and you may not even realize it.
1. Paying Fines Late

because credit bureaus could lower your credit score. That?s because the stores make what?s called a ?

When agencies make too many inquiries over a certain period of time, credit bureaus might dock your
credit score. Hard inquiries also happen when you pay for a rental car using a debit card, buy a new

4. Canceling Cards You Paid Off
Paying off a credit card is great, just don?t cancel it. Canceling a line of credit damages your credit
score because it lowers the total amount of credit in your name. Getting rid of the account could also
lessen the time of your credit history, and that can affect whether you get a loan in the future. Keep

Zora Neale Hurston Spunk Essay
Throughout history, everyone in the world has had to stick up for themselves at one point, no matter
the situation. Spunk by Zora Neale Hurston was written and published in 1925, this story exemplifies
the importance of sticking up for yourself. It was only the third short story Hurston wrote, but it
prospered. Zora Neale is best known for her works, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Dust Tracks
on a Road, both published in the late 1930s and early 1940s. She was an African American activist
during the Harlem Renaissance who often focused on the African American culture and experiences.
Zora Neale Hurston was born in a small town, Eatonville, Florida, which was one of the first all black

I ve now been at my placement for over a month and have experienced many different opportunities.
Over the last few weeks I learned about the process of facilitating a care conference with family
members and the resident. I learned how to write up notes about the care conference to chart. Another
learning experience I discovered was the process of guardians for residents who cannot make their
own decisions. My supervisor and I sat down to discuss the process and went through paperwork on
how to become a guardian. I learned a lot about Power of Attorney s during this time and the legal
work behind guardianship. Later, my supervisor said I d be able to go to a guardianship court hearing
to watch the process unfold. I m looking forward to that so I can see the whole picture of the
guardianship process. I got to experience what is called a departure at Bethel Home. A resident had

the hall and said a prayer with the family, and then they sang Amazing Grace. It was something I had
never experienced before and it was very emotional for the staff and the family members. It was a
helpful way for the family and staff to receive closure. Over the past month I am beginning to

An Analysis Of Bette Greene s The Summer Of My German Soldier
An action, a statement, one instant, has the power to alter your life and for young Patricia Bergen in
the young adult fiction novel, The Summer of my German Soldier by Bette Greene, many different
conflicts she had to face caused her to think very poorly of herself. Fortunately, with the influence of
one German soldier her whole mindset was revised. In the beginning of the novel , Patty Bergen
portrays as an insecure, desperate, and a solitary young girl, but at the resolution of the story we see
Patty as a confident, mature, and hopeful young woman who dreams of life away from the hardships
she faced.
When Patty Bergen is first introduced, we get an impression of Patty s life at home and her parent s
behavior towards her. Patty s father physically abuses her for misbehaving yet he beats Patty
mercilessly for foolish reasons in particular Mr. Bergen on page 106 and 107, God damn you! He
shouted at me. You ll obey me if it kills you! . In this quote, the harsh treatment Patty had to
experienced is displayed, the reader can notice that at the point, the quote occurs, Henry Bergen
assaults his daughter for a very foolish reason, explaining the reason why Patty is very unaccompanied
and how she is very determined to be adored by her parents. Not only is Patty physically abused, but
her mother verbally abuses her with insults and comments that cause Patty to think she needs to revise

Introduction
An Enterprise Architecture Framework (EAF) provides principles and practices for creating and using
the architecture description of a system. Frameworks are used to help organizations answer specific
question. Enterprise Architecture framework importance is de emphasized deliberately sometimes.

many EA frameworks out there. However, the four leading ones are The Zachman Framework for

5. When(Time) describes when the function should be performed.
6. Why(Motivation) describes the end goals, constraints, rules and regulations.
Example of Zachman Framework:
Pros of Zachman Framework
The Zachman framework is the most popular framework in the area of EA. It is a basis for some other
frameworks such as, FEAF(Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework). You can hardly find written
material on any EA framework without a reference to the Zachman framework. The framework is
generic in that it can be used to classify the descriptive representations of any physical object as well
as conceptual objects such as enterprises. It is also recursive in that it can be used to analyze the
architectural composition of itself. Although the framework will carry the relation from one column to
the other, it is still a fundamentally structural representation of the enterprise and not a flow
representation. Another of the strengths of the Zachman Framework is that it explicitly shows a
comprehensive set of views that can be addressed by enterprise architecture.
Cons of Zachman Framework
Zachman Framework can lead to a documentation heavy approach. .Each of the 36 cells in the
Framework handles a different question that has to be documented. It can also lead to a process heavy
approach to development . The Zachman Framework isn t well accepted within the development
community and few developers even seem to have

Why I Am Interested Of Taking The Chromatin, Epigenetics,...
No man s knowledge can go beyond his experience , this statement by John Locke captures the
essence of why I am interested in taking the Chromatin, Epigenetics, and Gene Expression course. I
have always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. As a child I was always asking questions about why
or how things worked. I would always tinker with things, taking them apart and reassembling them. I
questioned pretty much everything and longed to be able to do experiments and find solutions to
unanswered questions on my own. In high school, I volunteered, participated in athletics, held
leadership roles in several clubs, and also worked part time. Despite my many extracurricular
activities, I never lost my thirst for knowledge and academic success remained my foremost goal. To
challenge myself I enrolled in the most advanced courses available and took classes offered from a
nearby community college, I graduated with both a high school diploma and an Associate s Degree.
Motivated by my life experiences, I began my collegiate career at Virginia Tech (VT) as a biological
sciences major. In short time I decided that I would pursue a dual degree, adding psychology on as
another major. It was at VT that I would get my first opportunities to further my experience alongside
my knowledge. This experience would come in the form of research. As a freshman I worked in the
laboratory of Dr. Karen Brewer. I conducted synthesis, purification and characterization of

respect heavily in their society that we overlook other traits. It s the one story narratives that cause a
detriment as to how we view another groups culture and people. According to Leslie T. Chang, the
Western thoughts surrounding Chinese factory workers is both closed minded as well as rarely
includes the actual viewpoint of the worker themselves. Globalization is a major factor in the large
number of factories. In addition, we focus on the poor working conditions and by our standards lower
pay. Chang s speech eloquently states that as a country we overestimate our effects on other; our
desires for new technology does not result in Chinese people suffering in factories. They choose to
leave their homes in order to earn money, to learn new skills, and to see the world. In the ongoing
debate about globalization, what s been missing is the voices of the workers themselves (Chang,

Summary Of The Diary Of Anne Frank
The Diary of Anne Frank, is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by Anne Frank
while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
The family was apprehended in 1944, and Anne Frank died of typhus in the Bergen Belsen
concentration camp in 1945. The diary was retrieved by Miep Gies, who gave it to Anne s father, Otto
Frank, the family s only known survivor, just after the war was over. The diary has since been
published in more than 60 languages. In August 1944, they were discovered and deported to Nazi
concentration camps. They were long thought to have been betrayed, although there are indications
that their discovery may have been accidental, that the police raid had actually targeted ration fraud
.Of the eight people, only Otto Frank survived the war. Anne died when she was 15 years old in
Bergen Belsen, from typhus. The exact date of her death is unknown, and has long been believed to be
in early March, a few weeks before the prisoners were liberated by British troops in April 1945.
However, new research in 2015 indicated that Anne may have died in February. Anne Frank was a
young Jewish girl who lived and died during the Holocaust. The Frank family hid from the Nazis for
two long years in a Secret Annex at the back of a warehouse. During that time, Anne kept a diary in
which she not only wrote about the horrors of war but the everyday problems of being a teenager.

Rhetorical Analysis Of John Carpenter s The Thing
John Carpenter is one of the 21st century most original directors and cinematographers. Carpenter is
known as the master of horror narrative, but he offers the viewer more than a good scare. Carpenter
leaves his audience questioning their beliefs and identifying with the characters he personifies.
Carpenters use of allusion in his films plants direct messages into our subconscious. Carpenter has a
particular flare for slaying the innocent in his films and playing on the irony of the lease guilty or least
likely person tragically dying. In Assault on Precinct 13, the little girl getting ice cream laying slain
next to the ice cream truck man was not done by accident. Carpenter is deliberate in his approach to
that scene and even pays close ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carpenter received critical acclaim for Assault in Precinct 13. From the introduction of the film, we
are given settle warnings about the events to come. Carpenter captures many street scenes with signs
that said no parking , do not enter and no seating . Interestingly enough these signs would appear right
before or after a scene of devastation. Carpenter uses color to convey symbolic messages as well. The
color blue is used on the African American officer tie to convey patriotism and civil service. On the
other hand the color red is used in the brae of one of gang members and stands out on all of the
warning signs to symbolize danger (bad guys). Even more symbolic is the dart board which is hung in
the police station, which had two blue darts and a red bulls eye reinforcing the conflict between good
guys vs. bad buys consequently as the movie plots envelopes, we find ourselves catching the settle
details along the way.
John Carpenters career began while he was still studying in college. He launched his career with the
makings of short films in 1962. Carpenter experienced success early in his career, going on to win his
first academy award in 1970. In 1974 Carpenter released sci fi comedy, Dark Star . Dark Star was an
independent film by Carpenter and only had a budget of about $60,000. Dark Star has been mentioned
as one of the Top 10 space movies of all time and has good reason to. Dark Star as a black comedy

  • 2. Essay on Yoruba Art and Culture ?Any work of art owes its existence to the people and culture from which it has emerged. It has a functional and historical relationship with that culture.? Michael W. Conner, PhD# Staffs are carried and danced with by priestesses and priest in the Sango cult, dedicated to Sango, the Yoruba deity of thunder and lighting. The female figure represents a worshiper of Shango. The majority of the Yoruba people live on the west coast of Africa in Nigeria, but can also be found in many other places, as they are one of the largest cultural classifications in Africa. There are approximately 40 million Yoruba world wide. As a matter of fact, most of the slaves brought to America were Yoruban, and descendants of their tribes can be found ... The men in particular are responsible for woodcarving, utilizing the axe, the adze, the chisel, and the knife. The inspiration, impetus and objective for each piece is what will determine the style and form of art that is being created by each individual. Although the art forms created by the Yoruba are used to decorate and to affirm their social standing,, Their art is also deeply rooted with their spiritual commitment, especially where the art is used as part of a ritual or as a means of communicating with their Gods. There are over 400 deities that are worshipped by the Yoruba, which are called Orisas. Certain Gods are worshiped by every Yoruban, but there are specific Gods that are worshiped individually by certain families or even towns. Every Yoruban makes regular offerings to the gods that they do worship. One particular God, Sango, resides in the sky. He is the God of Thunder and he is responsible for producing the lightening bolts and thunder that comes to the earth. It is the belief of the Yoruba that If he is offended or angered, he sends bolts of lightening to the ground to ignite the offender?s house, or even to strike and kill them dead. Although every worshipper of the God Sango, the thunder god, owns a carved wand as a personal shrine, it may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Early Aurignacians The early Aurignacian layer contains only lithics and lacks the art and ornamentation pieces found in the other three Aurignacian sections. Hahn originally wanted to call this layer proto Aurignacian, This suggestion by Hahn related to his observation that AH III at Geißenklösterle lacked split based bone points, which he considered the hallmark of the early Aurignacian (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). Continued research shows that this is not the case, the Aurignacian occupation in the area fits the time period of the early Aurignacian and not the proto Aurignacian sometimes referred to as the Fumanian, with its geographic focus in Mediterranean Europe (Bon 2002; Teyssandier and Liolios 2003; Bolus 2004; Conard and Bolus 2006), (Nicholas J. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first answer could be as simple as they wiped them out through warfare. Neanderthals are thought to have lived in smaller groups and not to have reproduced as much as modern humans due to exploiting fewer resources, this would have given the Aurignacian people an easy advantage, but it is also commonly accepted that it would not have been needed. It is thought that through better use of resources and a willingness to take more resources that H.Sapiens Sapiens could have merely slowly taken over from Neanderthals by taking up all the resources for their growing population resulting in slowly starving the remaining Neanderthals. A good example of the different mindset between the two groups when it came to food is what happened to cave bears when modern humans arrived. Neanderthals and cave bears seem to have coexisted in a dynamic equilibrium with both species able to survive in the same region over long periods of time. With the arrival of modern humans this dynamic equilibrium was disturbed. Cave bear hunting was intensified and more bones show anthropogenic modifications and even direct evidence of hunting (Münzel et al. 2001; Münzel and Conard 2004b), (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It wasn t only food that the groups would have had to compete for, but also resources for crafting of tools, art, and instruments as well as fire wood. The Middle Paleolithic and Aurignacian are characterized by concentrations of burnt bone, indicating that the environment did not always contain sufficient quantities of wood for the heating and lighting needs of both populations (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It is commonly thought that without the introduction on modern humans Neanderthals would not have gone extinct. Neanderthal culture was not necessarily inferior, merely different and not suited to compete in the style it was forced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Pair Of Silk Stockings, A Shameful Affair, And The Story... What is social expectation and how does it affects one s life? In the short stories A Pair of Silk Stockings , A Shameful Affair , and The Story of Hour by Kate Chopin from the novel The Awakening and Selected Stories of Kate Chopin, they uncover the expected roles and responsibilities of women in the early 1900s. Through imagery and diction, Chopin reveals that people tend to fall into others expectations upon their marriage and even before it, which leads to lose their personal freedom and gain desires in conflict with social expectations. First, numerous people especially women in the early 1900s fall into others expectations upon and before their marriage. In A Pair of Silk Stockings and A Shameful Affair , two of their main characters are women, and they both fall into societal expectations about them where they later lose their freedom. For example, in A Pair of Silk Stocking , Chopin targets the social expectation upon one s marriage where she describes the usual mother s responsibilities by saying A dollar or two should be added to the price usually paid for Janie s shoes, which would insure their lasting an appreciable time longer than they usually did () As Chopin utilizes imagery, this infers an image of what Mrs. Sommers plans to do as a mother, who she carefully plan her money to buy new clothes for her children. Moreover, the word insures means to arrange compensation for damage that is done to the event, whereas the word appreciable means large enough to be noticed. Yet, both connotes a stable lasting which further reveal that one of the mother s roles that is expected by the society is to know how use the money wisely for their children without falling in debt. Thus, the responsibilities of a mother have overloaded her where she later turn in self indulgent. Likewise, Chopin not only portrays how women fall into others expectations upon their marriage yet they also fall into it before their marriage. In the short story A Shameful Affair , the author describes the primary character as Mildred Kraummer, who she falls in love with the one of the farmhands. While Mildred meets him fishing, they accidentally give a kiss where the author narrates He kissed her lips... Shame ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the most common techniques that is seen in today s society is the stereotypical portrayal of women, who tend to pose rather promiscuously as seen in Figure One. These types of images portray women as sex objects or as submissive housewives to their husbands. This comes into context with the advertising in which American Apparel portrays. This is made prevalent in one of the first encounters that Shakespeare writes of Prospero s manipulation with music to control the character. Ariel is unseen to the characters but in the eyes of the characters, something mystical makes them fall asleep. The only ones whom remain awake are Sebastian, and Antonio. They question why they did not get tired. With the music Ariel puts the characters into a deep sleep in order to listen to the conspiracy plans of the other two characters. Ariel wants to prevent the murder of Alonso and sings in the ear of the sleeping Gonzalo, in order to wake him up. Bourdieu Habitus Concept Introduction The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu approaches the concept of power using a similar concept with Foucault which they presume that power is that there are always structures that are formed by human relationships which dictates how people should behave. These structures influence the individual social life. Computers have been around for such a short period of time, yet they seem to be advancing faster than anything else; this is because there is an infinite number of ways computers can be implemented to help individuals. Thirty years after the first computer was developed, computers had already been altered to read and save information on magnetic tapes that ran through the computer. Jennifer Price explains why they became so popular in her essay, The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History. Price believes that American culture only focuses on how the fad began, the irony of how they treats the real flamingo, as well as the bright colors that are portrayed. The beginning of the popularity of flamingos is explained in detail during the beginning of the essay. Flamingos became synonymous with wealth and pizzazz which lead to everyone wanting one. A Florida hotel, the flamingo, was visited by the rich. Since the country was just coming out of the depression, everyone wished to appear rich leading to more hotels being built to cater to an eager middle class. The upper class had a fancy hotel, and all of the country decided to copy them. While the United States were obsessed with flamingos in the 1900s, Florida residents hunted the bird in prior years. In her second paragraph, Price calls this new found fad ironic. She explains that Americans hunted flamingos to extinction in Florida in the late 1850s. A giant of a brown skinned man sauntered up the one street of the Village and out into the palmetto thickets with a small pretty woman clinging lovingly to his arm (Hurston). The two characters, the short story Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway is centred around can be perceived to be close to one another, in some form. This can be inferred from the passage It s really an awfully simple operation, Jig, the man said. It s not really an operation at all. where the two talk of the operation used to induce a miscarriage, a topic that tends to only be breached between trusted individuals; although this excerpt does not determine the nature of their relationship. • 30. Reflection On Social Work I ve now been at my placement for over a month and have experienced many different opportunities. Over the last few weeks I learned about the process of facilitating a care conference with family members and the resident. I learned how to write up notes about the care conference to chart. Another learning experience I discovered was the process of guardians for residents who cannot make their own decisions. My supervisor and I sat down to discuss the process and went through paperwork on how to become a guardian. I learned a lot about Power of Attorney s during this time and the legal work behind guardianship. Later, my supervisor said I d be able to go to a guardianship court hearing to watch the process unfold. I m looking forward to that so I can see the whole picture of the guardianship process. I got to experience what is called a departure at Bethel Home. A resident had passed and the staff received the family s permission for the departure ceremony. The staff gathered in the hall and said a prayer with the family, and then they sang Amazing Grace. It was something I had never experienced before and it was very emotional for the staff and the family members. It was a helpful way for the family and staff to receive closure. Over the past month I am beginning to understand the flow of Bethel Home. I am starting to get a feel for what the social worker s responsibilities are and an understanding of other positions. Example of Zachman Framework: Pros of Zachman Framework The Zachman framework is the most popular framework in the area of EA. It is a basis for some other frameworks such as, FEAF(Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework). You can hardly find written material on any EA framework without a reference to the Zachman framework. The framework is generic in that it can be used to classify the descriptive representations of any physical object as well as conceptual objects such as enterprises. It is also recursive in that it can be used to analyze the architectural composition of itself. Although the framework will carry the relation from one column to the other, it is still a fundamentally structural representation of the enterprise and not a flow representation. Another of the strengths of the Zachman Framework is that it explicitly shows a comprehensive set of views that can be addressed by enterprise architecture. Cons of Zachman Framework Zachman Framework can lead to a documentation heavy approach. .Each of the 36 cells in the Framework handles a different question that has to be documented. It can also lead to a process heavy approach to development . The Zachman Framework isn t well accepted within the development community and few developers even seem to have ... No man s knowledge can go beyond his experience , this statement by John Locke captures the essence of why I am interested in taking the Chromatin, Epigenetics, and Gene Expression course. I have always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. As a child I was always asking questions about why or how things worked. I would always tinker with things, taking them apart and reassembling them. I questioned pretty much everything and longed to be able to do experiments and find solutions to unanswered questions on my own. In high school, I volunteered, participated in athletics, held leadership roles in several clubs, and also worked part time. Despite my many extracurricular activities, I never lost my thirst for knowledge and academic success remained my foremost goal. To challenge myself I enrolled in the most advanced courses available and took classes offered from a nearby community college, I graduated with both a high school diploma and an Associate s Degree. Motivated by my life experiences, I began my collegiate career at Virginia Tech (VT) as a biological sciences major. In short time I decided that I would pursue a dual degree, adding psychology on as another major. It was at VT that I would get my first opportunities to further my experience alongside my knowledge. Moreover, it is important be aware of the diversity of Asian culture as over 26 countries are included (Hildebrand, Phenice, Gray, Hines, 2008). In reviewing three separate TED Talks related to Asian culture I discovered that they work incredibly hard for what they believe in. For instance, the brave individuals who escape from North Korea and the outwardly LGBTQ+ members in Taiwan or Japan that face adversity. In western culture, I believe, that we focus so heavily on the honor and respect heavily in their society that we overlook other traits. It s the one story narratives that cause a detriment as to how we view another groups culture and people. According to Leslie T. Chang, the Western thoughts surrounding Chinese factory workers is both closed minded as well as rarely includes the actual viewpoint of the worker themselves. Globalization is a major factor in the large number of factories. In addition, we focus on the poor working conditions and by our standards lower pay. Chang s speech eloquently states that as a country we overestimate our effects on other; our desires for new technology does not result in Chinese people suffering in factories.
