PRELIMINARY INTERVIEW Charlotte Andrew
BRIEF
Our preliminary task was too create a short interview discussing the
topic of mobile phones using the set questions provided. The
interview would require background music, editing and cutaways. The
cut aways had to be shot and not archive footage and the editing had
to be done by the group, as well as the selection of background
music.
EVALUATION
Good Elements:
•There was a good interview set up with the interviewee positioned to
one side of the screen looking on level but not making direct contact
with the camera.
•The graphics on screen were relevant, easy to read and looked
professional.
•The cut aways used were relevant and there was enough of them.
•The movements and angles used in the shots were good and focused
on the objects more than the type of shot being used which made
them more natural.
EVALUATION
Improvements:
•The music used in the background was upbeat but the lyrics were
irrelevant.
•The levels of the background music were not adjusted which left the
interviewees answers clashing with the background noise making it
difficult to hear or understand.
•The repeated actions of the interviewee are distracting and un
realistic.
•The graphics on screen were on the wrong side so therefore
everything was pushed to one side of the screen.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
From this preliminary task I have learnt the basic interview set ups
and know how to apply them effectively such as:
•Interviewee positioning in the frame, the interviewee needs to be level
with the camera but not looking directly into it (look off to the
opposite side) and also abide by the rule of thirds.
•Rule of thirds, the most interesting thing in the frame needs to be
kept out .of the middle of the shot.
•On screen graphics, they need to be relative and a decent size.
•What type of shots create good cutaways, more natural shots.
•Which mic to use depending on the environment.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Looking at our final piece, the elements that need to be put into
practice are:
•Having relevant music in the background that does not battle with the
interviewees answers (at an appropriate level).
•Have the interviewee sat down and nothing in their hands so that they
do not distract the viewers from what they are saying.
•Have more relevant, interesting and a wider range of cut aways.
