7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Preliminary TaskThe preliminary task was the first chance I had to practise filming and learn different editing techniques. I also found it useful as I was able to use equipment such as a camera and tripod. It was the time for errors and mistakes and for learning.
180 RuleOne of the difficult issues I personally felt whilst filming the preliminary task was getting used to filming within the 180 rule. This took up a lot of time because we were trying to make sure that we would not break the rule, although it was time consuming it was worth it as our finish product did not need any re-shoots and it was all within the rule. We then learned a better way of making sure we kept within the rule instead of moving the camera after every shot to one side, we could film a whole scene on one side and then the other side which would save time and also give us back up footage.
BackgroundThe preliminary task gave us certain principles and guidelines that we had to follow. We were not given a lot of variety and own input except for our script and narrative. As we were only given an hour to film it, time was limited and we were in a hurry. I quickly discovered how important it was to have a storyboard for pre-production as we would then be able to film quickly knowing what the shots looked like and how long they would take.
AwarenessAfter the preliminary task it made me aware of how useful pre-production planning was. It also helped me understand how all the research such as the Repertoire of Elements contributes in making films, this allowed us to explore further about stock characters, mise en scene and narrative. It also helped me gain awareness about subtle things such as lighting and the rule of thirds. All the practise helped me learn how to use the equipment and editing software, this contributed to the quality of my film.
