Genelde neyi tercih ettiğimizi
*prefer to (do)
*prefer -ing
Kullanarak söyleriz.
Examples:
I don’t like cities. . I prefer to live in the country .
I prefer living in the country.
(Şehirleri sevmiyorum. Kırsal yerlerde yaşamayı tercih ederim.)
*Gördüğümüz gibi prefer’den sonra ‘’-ing veya to ‘’ kullanılabilir.
I prefer something to something else.
I prefer to do something rather than (do) something else.
I prefer doing something to doing something else.
-Yukarıdaki kullanımlara baktığımızda ;
I prefer something to something else.
-Tercih ettiğimiz iki nesne ise , nesneler arasında to kullanmamız yeterli.
I prefer this coat to the coat you were wearing yesterday .
(Örnekte görüldüğü gibi tercih için sunulan iki seçenekte ‘’coat’’ yani ‘palto’ ve
ikisi arasına to konulmuş.Tercih ettiği palto ise to’ dan önceki palto )
-Dün giydiğin palto yerine,bu paltoyu tercih ederim.
I prefer to do something rather than (do) something else
I prefer to drive rather than travel by train
-Tren ile gezmektense araba kullanmayı tercih ederim.
-Rather than gördüğümüzde dikkat etmemiz gereken nokta, Rather than’den
sonra ‘to ve –ing’ gibi takıların gelmemesi.
"would prefer’’ kalıbını ,genel değil de belli bir konuda kişilerin neyi istediğini
söylerken kullanırız.
-"Would you prefer tea or coffee" "Coffee, please.«
(Çay mı kahve mi tercih edersiniz? - Kahve lütfen)
Bu yapıyı kullanırken dikkat etmemiz gereken husus ;
"would prefer to do" (not "doing"):
Would prefer’ den sonra to kullanmalıyız. ‘–ing ‘ kullanmıyoruz.
"Shall we go by train?" "Well, I'd prefer to go by car. (not "I'd prefer going")
I'd prefer to stay at home tonight rather than go to the cinema.
Would rather (do) = would prefer (to do).
• İkiside aynı anlama geliyor aralarındaki tek fark ‘would rather’
yapısında fiilin yalın halinin kullanılması .
• ‘would prefer ‘ yapısında ise fiilden önce mastar eki olan ‘to ‘
geliyor.
"Shall we go by train?"
-"I'd prefer to go by car."
-"I'd rather go by car. (not to go)
"Would you rather have tea or coffee" "Coffee, please."
Olumsuz cümle kurmak istediğimizde
"I'd rather not (do something)« şeklinde kullanırız.
I'm tired. I'd rather not go out this evening.
Yorgunum. Bu akşam dışarı çıkmamayı tercih ederim.
"Do you want to go out this evening" "I'd rather not."
• Şimdi de öğrendiğimiz konu ile ilgili
örnek sorulara göz atalım.
