● The drink Coca-Cola was originated in 1886 by an Atlanta pharmacist, John S.
Pemberton.
● In 1899 the Coca-Cola Company signed its first agreement with an independent
bottling company.
● The Coca-Cola Company is a beverage retailer, manufacturer and marketer of non-
alcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups.
● Coca-Cola offers more than 500 brands in over 200 countries or territories and serves
1.6bn servings each day.

CONTROVERSIES OF COCA-COLA
1. Coca-Cola’s first trial (In 1909, the Pure Food and Drug Act passed, and the United
States government seized 40 barrels and 20 kegs of Coca-Cola syrup because they considered
the added caffeine to be a harmful ingredient. One of the first noted criticisms of Coca-Cola was
that it produced serious mental and motor deficits.)
2. Products
Caffeine- In 1916, there was a federal suit under which the US government unsuccessfully
attempted to force The Coca-Cola Company to remove caffeine from its products.
Bottles-In 1944, Escola was a waitress in a restaurant. She was putting away glass bottles of
Coca-Cola when one of the bottles spontaneously exploded in her hand. She successfully
argued that the company was liable
3. Environment issues
⇨Water use- in march 2004 local officials in kerala shut down a $16 million
coke bottling plant blamed for a drastic decline in both quantity and qualityof water
available to local farmers and villagers.
⇨Packaging- Packaging used in coca cola products has a significant
environmental impact. The company is the single largest plastic polluter in
the world.
4. Marketing issue- the company faced a heavy marketing issue related
to competition and its product.
Coca Cola’s PR Strategy
.CAFFEINE-Coca-Cola reduced its caffeine content but did not eliminate it.
.BOTTLES- The company will recollect the empty coca cola bottles.
.WATER USE-the company help build water infrastructure in communities near Coca-Cola plants as well as in places
where the company did not operate.
.PACKAGING- our bottles and cans have been 100% recyclable for a number of years
MARKETING ISSUES-The group's aim is to make 100% of its products from recyclable material by 2025, and for 100% of all its
packaging to be recycled by 2030.

Coca-Cola’s first trial (In 1909, the Pure Food and Drug Act passed, and the United States government seized 40 barrels and 20 kegs of Coca-Cola syrup because they considered the added caffeine to be a harmful ingredient. One of the first noted criticisms of Coca-Cola was that it produced serious mental and motor deficits.) 2.
