Tonight’s Agenda
 Check in on grades and deadlines
 Introductions and Conclusions
 Modifiers
 Chapter 6, Beyond Words

 Let’s chat
Introductions
 The introduction should orient the reader to the topic.
 The introduction should make the reader want to read

more.
 Introductions should go from broad, general
statements to narrower, more focused statements…
 …ending with the thesis, the last sentence of the
introduction.
Conclusions
 The conclusion should provide the reader with a sense

of closure, so the paper comes to a logical close rather
than just ending.
 The conclusion should add an insight (you haven’t
shared yet) you’ve had as a result of writing the paper.
 Try to make the last sentence count—it should “seal
the deal.”
 Do not repeat anything word for word from other parts
of your paper.
Modifiers
 Grammatically, modify means to give more

information about.
 Basic principle: the modifier must come directly after
the word or phrase it modifies.
 When you violate this basic principle, your sentences
can end up saying something other than you mean.
