6. Unity and Coherence
 Unity is achieved when each sentence of each
paragraph and each paragraph of the essay needs to be
there in order to support the thesis
 Coherence is achieved when all the information
presented is about one idea, sometimes called
“sticking to the topic.”
 Next to the thesis statement, the topic sentences of the
paragraphs are the most important tools in achieving
unity and coherence.
