This document outlines the course contents for the subject Power System Practice and Design, which is part of the 8th semester Bachelor of Electrical Engineering program at Gujarat Technological University. The course covers various topics related to designing power systems including transmission line design, AC and DC low tension distribution design, substation design, power system earthing, power station design, insulation coordination, and HVDC transmission. Site visits to LT/HT electrification and 220KV/400KV substations are also suggested to complement the theoretical concepts covered in the course.

Electrical fault is the deviation of voltages and currents from nominal values or states. Under normal operating conditions, power system equipment or lines carry normal voltages and currents which results in a safer operation of the system.
Injection of the wind power into an electric grid affects the power quality. The performance of the wind turbine and thereby power quality are determined on the basis of measurements and the norms followed according to the guideline specified in International Electro-technical Commission standard, IEC-61400. The influence of the wind turbine in the grid system concerning the power quality measurements are-the active power, reactive power, variation of voltage, flicker, harmonics, and electrical behavior of switching operation and these are measured according to national/international guidelines. The paper study demonstrates the power quality problem due to installation of wind turbine with the grid. In this proposed scheme STATic COMpensator (STATCOM) is connected at a point of common coupling with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to mitigate the power quality issues. The battery energy storage is integrated to sustain the real power source under fluctuating wind power. The STATCOM control scheme for the grid connected wind energy generation system for power quality improvement is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK in power system block set. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme relives the main supply source from the reactive power demand of the load and the induction generator. The development of the grid co-ordination rule and the scheme for improvement in power quality norms as per IEC-standard on the grid has been presented.
Fault analysis in power system using power systems computer aided designIJAAS Team
This work presents a fault analysis simulation model of an IEEE 30 bus system in a distribution network. This work annalysed the effect of fault current and fault voltage in a distribution system. A circuit breaker was introduced into the system to neutralize the effect of the fault. The system was run on a PSCAD software and results were obtained. The system was monitored based on the start time and the end time of the fault and how well the circuit breaker reacts with those times. Fault occurred from 0.100 to 0.300 seconds before it was removed. At the time fault was not applied (i.e. from 0.00 to 0.100 and from 0.300 to 0.72), the circuit breaker was close and became open when fault was applied so as to cut off current flow through the line.The result obtained gave the disruption caused by the fault and the quick response of the circuit breaker in neutralizing it. Results gotten are based on when the circuit breaker is close and no fault is applied and when the circuit breaker is open due to fault. From this work, it was obtained that circuit breakers are very essential in system protection and reliability.

Abstract: In present era, power engineers need to plan the power system design in such a way that the system can sustain its Power Quality (PQ) even after facing all the above said problems. Along with that the system should also be compatible with the increasing demand of power supply. Quality of power depends on the system design, reliability and efficiency so study of PQD is important. PQD affects industrial as well as large commercial customers. Voltage sag is also referred as voltage dip. Voltage dip is the term given by IEC while the term "voltage sag" (VS) is used by North American power quality commission. VS creates disturbance in the pure sinusoidal waveform of voltage which in turn deteriorates the power quality of the system. VS occur for very short duration of 0.5 to 30 cycles. It is decrease in RMS voltage of about 90 % to 10 % of nominal voltage. Although VS occurs for very short duration but its effects deteriorates system with time decreases life period of the system. The present work is an attempt to analyse the voltage sag on power distribution network with different transformer connections. The field specifications obtained are used in MATLAB/SIMULINK and the results are discussed.

The proposed project is developed to manage the automobile in the automobile dealer company. The main module in this project is login, automobile management, customer management, sales, complaints and reports. The first module is the login. The automobile showroom owner should login to the project for usage. The username and password are verified and if it is correct, next form opens. If the username and password are not correct, it shows the error message.
When a customer search for a automobile, if the automobile is available, they will be taken to a page that shows the details of the automobile including automobile name, automobile ID, quantity, price etc. “Automobile Management System” is useful for maintaining automobiles, customers effectively and hence helps for establishing good relation between customer and automobile organization. It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.

2. AC and DC Low Tension Distribution Design: Types of distribution systems:
arrangements, selection and size of feeders using Kelvin’s law, design of cables in
distribution systems considering ampere capacity, voltage drop during starting and
running load, primary distribution design, secondary distribution design. HV
distribution design concept, load balancing Distribution substation, Calculation of
distributor size and its examples, calculation of voltage drops and size of distributor in
ring system. Voltage regulation and lamp flicker.

3. Substation Design: Determination of voltage regulation and losses in power system,
shifting of distribution transformer centre, Substation layout, sizes and locations of
sub stations, Substation equipments specifications ratings and its operation from
design view point, Cathodic Protection, Gas Insulated Substation (GIS).

4. Power System Earthing – Power Station and Sub Station Earthing Objectives,
definitions, tolerable limits of body currents, soil resistivity, measurement of soil
resistivity, earth resistance, measurement of earth resistance, tolerable step and touch
voltage, actual step and touch voltage, design of earthing grid, impulse behaviour of
earthing system.

5. Design of Power Station: Introduction, selection of sizes and location of generating
stations, interconnections issues with wind and Solar PV.

6. Insulation Coordination and Location of Lightning Arrestor : Introduction,
definitions, insulation-co-ordination curves, determination of line insulation, Basic
Insulation level (BIL), Insulation levels of substation equipments, Lightning arrestor
selection and location, Selection of arrestor voltage rating, arrestor discharge voltage
and arrestor discharge current, protective margin.

7. HVDC Transmission: Merits and demerits of HVDC transmission, one line diagram,
types of DC link, necessary equipments, operation and control, applications, recent
advances, HVDC in India.

Note: It is suggested that based on the above syllabus, visits for LT/HT Electrification and
220KV/ 400 KV substations should be carried out.
