“The tense of a verb group is its form, which usually shows whether you are referring to past, present, or future time”, according to the Collins Dictionary, and the Cambridge Dictionary defines ‘tense’ as ”any of the forms of a verb which show the time at which an action happened.”
This presentation contains explanations and excursuses to all tenses of the English language. A very useful resource for any teacher. It contains information about Present, Past and Future tenses.
2. Present Simple
We use the present simple to express usual actions or things
that happen in the present.
The structure is:
Subject + Infinitive verb (affirmative)
Subject + Do/Does not + verb (negative)
Do/Does + subject + verb (question)
Bear in mind that, in the third person singular, we need to add
“-s” at the end of the verb.

Use the verbs in the correct form to complete the senteces.
eat- sleep- like- see- dream - love
She ___________ spaguetti everyday.
They ___________ to go out on weekends.
I _____________ to play basketball.
He ____________ every night.
You ____________ your brother at school.
She ____________ until 10 in the morning on weekends.
4. Past Simple
We use the past simple when we are talking about an action that
happened in the past.
The structure is:
Subject + past verb (affirmative)
Subject + did not + infinitive verb (negative)
Did + subject + infinitive verb (question)
Remember that we have regular and irregular verbs. To form the
verb:
Regular: Add –ed at the end of the word.
Irregular:The second column of the verbs.

Complete with the correct form of the verb in brackets:
She _______ (travel) by train to Madrid.
The film _________ (be) boring.
My dog ________ (bite) Ann in her leg.
We _______ (stay) at home because of the weather.
My mother __________ (invite) me to the cinema.
Clara _______ (make) a beautiful dress for her sister.
7. Present continuous
We use the present continuous with normal verbs to
express the idea that something is happening now, at this
very moment.
The structure is:
Subject + is/are + verb-ing (affirmative)
Subject + is/are not + verb-ing (negative)
Is/are + subject + verb-ing (question)
8. Exercises
Build sentences with these words. Change the verb to
the correct form of present continuous:
I / read / a comic book
You / not / study / Maths
She / play / volleyball
He / run / very fast / ?
Sam and Ann / listen / to music
9. Past Continuous
We use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer
action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is
usually a shorter action in the Simple Past.
The structure is:
Subject + was/were + verb-ing (affirmative)
Subject + was/were not + verb-ing (negative)
Was/were + subject + verb-ing (question)
