The document summarizes key events and issues surrounding the creation of the US Constitution:
- After the Revolutionary War, states seized former crown lands but the economy struggled, leading to protests like Shays' Rebellion.
- The Articles of Confederation had weaknesses like the federal government's inability to tax or enforce laws.
- The Constitutional Convention in 1787 addressed these issues. Delegates debated plans and reached compromises, including equal representation of states in the Senate.
- The resulting Constitution established three branches of federal government and a system of checks and balances.
5. 5 weaknesses of the articles of confederation. Government couldn’t extend its jurisdiction to individuals. Government could not command respect abroad by stabilizing credit. Government could not unify foreign and domestic policies. Government could not pass navigation regulations. Government could not enforce treaty obligations.
6. Constitutional Convention Where? Philadelphia When? 1787 Reason- Representatives from each former colony except Rhode island where the constitution was formed.
7. (7)contributors to the constitutional convention George Washington- was elected to preside. Edmund Randolph- offered the large state plan. William Paterson- offered the small state plan. Oliver Ellsworth & Roger Sherman- Compromise measure that included the house of representatives and the senate. James Madison- Responsible for style of constitution and persuaded Virginia and Maryland to agree a conference concerning navigation on Potomac. Gunning Bedford- Opposed strong central government.
9. VA plan VS. New Jersey plan in comparison to the great compromise. VA plan- Proposed three separate branches of government and bicameral legislature where representative will be based upon state population, or money contributions. New Jersey plan- Proposed a one-house national legislature with representative selected by legislatures, and each state has one vote. Great Compromise- Each state will send equal number of representatives to the senate and one representative to the house of representatives for every 30,000 people in that state.
10. 3/5 Compromise 5 slaves count as 3 people in terms of appointment for the house of representatives, presenditial electors, and direct taxes.
11. Federalists Party I have decided to choose the side of the federalists! Some reasons I have chosen the side would be because the separations of powers among three branches will save anyone from getting to much power and the separation will protect the citizens rights. Also a strong central government will give protection to the citizens and the public also it would protect the country’s credit.
