Cases of teacher trainers using examples of teaching practices on video in a ...Université de Sherbrooke
Although many research on preservice or inservice teacher training programs using examples of teaching practices on video are implemented (Bloomberg, Renkl, Sherin, Borko & Seidel, 2013 ; Gaudin & Chalies, 2012 ; Baecher & Kung, 2011 ; Santagata & Guarino, 2011), teacher learning in such contexts is still little explored, particularly in Quebec and in distance teacher education contexts. This implies that online teacher trainers rely primarily on their pedagogical intuitions and their experience to support their use of examples of practice on video.
We have conducted a first small investigation that revealed that in the context of distance learning training programs given at the University of Sherbrooke (Québec, Canada), some videos taken out of the platform called "Zoom sur l’expertise pédagogique" (http://zoom.animare.org) as well as videos taken out of other platforms are used. However, the proportion of trainers who use them is very low and pedagogical approaches vary widely and are generally based on intuition. Pedagogical intentions nevertheless seem to cluster according to three distinct categories identified by Janík, Janíková, Knecht, Kubiatko, Najvar, Najvarová & Šebestová (2009): A- Illustrate good practice, B- Develop reflective practice and C- Guide and support teaching practice.
To conduct this research, of which we would like to present here some aspects of the preliminary results, we chose to observe a few trainers whose intentions and educational uses are part of the category B of Janík and colleagues’ (2009) and do not tend to show good example to follow but rather tend to lead students to develop an ability to analyze teaching practices to reach a better understanding and greater learning.
Given the complexity of the role of the online trainer to support interactions between in training teachers (Santiago, Leh and Nakayama, 2011) by introducing various types of interactions (Dumont, 2007) and given that learning occurs through various cognitive processes that are influenced by the environment and the social context in which a person is, the practice of reference, the observations he or she can do, the models that are proposed, the mediation offered by a trainer or a more experimented peer, his or her conceptions or expectations expressed (Cross, 1981; Bruner, 1996; Wang and Kang, 2007), we chose to implement this research with the overall objective that is to understand the evolution of the abilities of in training teachers to analyze classroom examples, according to peer and trainer’s interventions, to contextual elements or to the characteristics of the pedagogical design.
In the context of this symposium, we would like to present some preliminary results of the first phase of this research, in particular the characteristics of the pedagogical design implemented by the trainers participating in this research and their specific uses of the videos of practice in their online distance training context.

The prevalence and widespread use of social media tools make possible a seemingly endless array of ways to share ideas and build new knowledge. During this keynote presentation on March 29, 2013 at Western Illinois University Symposium on Teaching, Research, and Creative Activities by Jason Rhode, we considered how students today are using social media in their daily lives and explore together how social media can be used to actively engage students in the learning process, both in and outside the classroom. A social teaching framework was shared as well as principles and best practices for leveraging social media in teaching and learning. The new Blackboard Portfolio tool released with Blackboard learn in April 2014 is much-improved and provides an easy-to-use platform for students to demonstrate and reflect upon what they have learned throughout their university career. Northern Illinois University (NIU) implemented the portfolios campus-wide during 2015, and it was used by thousands of students in a relatively short time. This presentation at BbWorld16 will provide an overview of the portfolio tool, strategies for developing portfolios that serve different purposes, and best practices for institutional adoption. Sample portfolios and exemplars from faculty who are using Blackboard portfolios in their classes will be shared, along with NIU’s campus-wide implementation process. Designing appropriate online staff development for part-time distance teaching staff presents many challenges. Traditionally, much of what is learnt happens ‘on the job’, as staff try out new approaches or meet each other for a chat over coffee (Clus, 2011). In a geographically distributed institution such as The Open University, this sort of situated and social learning is unlikely to take place often, particularly for its part-time staff. In addition, staff often will have the time and motivation to participate only in development or training which is directly relevant to their own working practices and is very timely for them (Ottenbreit-Leftwich, 2010). To encourage staff to make the best use of technologies and to adopt them enthusiastically, we need to make development engaging and attractive. In this presentation we discuss how we address these challenges when designing and developing training and development opportunities in the use of Blackboard Collaborate for part-time distance teaching staff in
The Open University. An overview of the various resources and courses we have produced will be discussed, alongside participant perspectives. Our development pathways include experiential and peer learning in cohort groups, exploiting the potential of short online courses (Campbell & Macdonald, 2011), as well as supported self-study routes using online resources. Each of the development pathways we provide allows staff the opportunity to participate in shared reflection, fostering a sense of community (Baran and Correia, 2014; Perry and Edwards, 2009). As well as these main development pathways, ongoing support, for those not presently participating in one of our development pathways, is provided through online communities of practice (Kear, 2011).

This was presented to an audience of clubs, national governing bodies of sport and other sport related organisations and individuals at Channel 4 in collaboration with Sport England and as part of "All Together Now"
Ubiquitous computing has been here since at least 2005, but we may not have noticed it. Computers are rapidly fragmenting from expensive general-purpose devices to cheaper specialized networked tools (phones, netbooks, desktop RFID readers, MP3 players, running shoe sensors, etc.). These tools bridge the physical world and the Internet in new ways, often using Web 2.0-style interaction to create unexpected ways to work and play in the real world while simultaneously having the power of the Net available to us. This talk will discuss how mashups between meatspace and the Net have already happened, what the emerging patterns are, and how widgetization is about to jump from social networks to devices and then disappear altogether.
FLIPPED CLASSROOM IN HIGHER EDUCATION WITHIN A VIDEOCONFERENCING CONTEXT : A ...Université de Sherbrooke
More and more institutions of higher education have videoconferencing and telepresence equipment to give users the feeling of being present around the same table in a synchronous manner. However, these facilities are not specifically adapted to the needs of the teaching profession, and teachers, pedagogical advisors and researchers need key to understand how to enhance the quality of teaching in such settings (Lameul & Loisy, 2014). In this context, it is crucial to build a repertoire of rigorous and critical knowledge about adapted pedagogical approaches, the effects of these devices on student learning (Albero, 2011) and emerging pedagogical innovations (Bédard & Béchard, 2009).
In order to reach this goal, we set up a design-based research project (Wang & Hannafin, 2005) called TOPIC (Telepresence as an Opportunity for Pedagogical Innovation and Conception). Among different trainings we designed based on a close collaboration between researchers and trainers, we designed a training which main goal was to bring teachers to develop 4 competencies related to teaching a flipped classroom in a videoconference context. This training we designed and taught was “flipped” and took place over 2 weeks, with participants in Australia, France and Quebec.
A presentation on a Google sponsored MOOC for teacher professional development. This provides an examination on our research project on effective course design to increase student engagement and community.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
