There is a known correlation between poverty and environmental degradation internationally. Poor families in developing countries often disregard the environment in order to focus on survival, and poverty stricken nations do not prioritize environmental conservation due to other social problems. In Tajikistan, over 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, and the country faces issues such as unsustainable agriculture, lack of energy, and frequent natural disasters. International organizations are working to address the environmental and poverty issues in Tajikistan and other nations through initiatives, but more funding is still needed to fully solve the problems.

Deforestation and Poverty
India has experienced significant deforestation over the past few decades, reducing its forest coverage from 14.8 billion acres to 8.6 billion acres. Deforestation is primarily driven by activities like agriculture, wood harvesting, mining, and infrastructure development to support population growth. This has led to negative environmental consequences such as loss of biodiversity, increased carbon emissions, water cycle disruption, and soil erosion. Many of these activities are a result of poverty in rural areas, demonstrating the need to address poverty as part of the solution to reduce deforestation rates.

There are two types of displacement: physical displacement, which results in relocation or loss of shelter, and economic displacement, which results in loss of assets or means of livelihood. Common causes of development-induced displacement include water supply projects, urban infrastructure development, transportation projects, energy projects, agricultural expansion, and the creation of parks and forest reserves. Rehabilitation aims to restore displaced individuals and communities to a satisfactory state by providing replacement housing, land, employment, and rebuilding social networks, but often fails to restore people's sense of identity and cultural link to the environment.

Mongol and Chinese Women
The story describes two women from different societies - Kutulan, a Mongol woman, and Chi Guo, a Chinese woman living under Mongol rule. Kutulan lived a happy life with her warrior husband as part of the nomadic Mongol society where women had significant freedom and rights. In contrast, Chi Guo lived under the traditional Confucian Chinese system where women had little authority. Dissatisfied with her treatment, Chi Guo sought out Kutulan and they discussed their differing cultures, finding more similarities than differences and becoming close friends.

Eradication of poverty has been the major focus of the UN member countries from past three decades. Despite significant efforts, a large segment of the world population still lives below the UN poverty line of $1.25 per day. One major threat to the efforts of poverty eradication is the growing concerns of global warming. Already the consequences of climate change can be seen with unpredictable weather changes, insufficient rains, severe droughts and the fast melting galciers. India is probably facing the worst water crisis in its history after two successive years of less monsoons. Marathawada in Maharashtra, North Karnataka and parts of Telangana are living at the mercy of the state and central government with no water left to drink or irrigate. Dams in Marathwada has only 3% water left in them. This water crisis is affecting not only the people and economy but also livestock and cattle which are valuable assets for the poor farmers. Understanding the gravity of the situation it can be said that India needs to focus not only on mitigating risks of climate change but also ensure development of opportunities to reduce vulnerability of the poor.
