variety of conditions that affect the head and neck. Dr.

options to patients with sinusitis.
Sinusitis, or sinus infection, occurs when the sinus
passages become clogged with fluid. This blockage
causes the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi,
which can develop into infections. Often a secondary
condition to the common cold or to allergies, sinusitis
often responds to such home treatments as nasal
decongestant sprays, saline washes, and topical
corticosteroids.
If a patient presents with symptoms that persist for
more than seven to 10 days, he or she may receive a
prescription for an antibiotic.

However, because antibiotics are effective only
against bacterial infection, and because many sinus
infections are viral or related to an allergic reaction, a
physician may be cautious in prescribing antibiotic
therapy at an earlier point.
If a patient's sinusitis does not respond to these
therapies, or if a structural blockage is causing the
infection, a patient may require sinus surgery. These
procedures are most often minimally invasive and
may involve the removal of problematic tissue growth.
In some cases, however, a surgery-free approach
known as a balloon sinuplasty can open the
passages, using a specially designed surgical
