This document discusses thrombosis (blood clots) and thromboembolism. It explains that thrombosis can form during or after surgery when blood pools and clots more easily. Surgeries that involve the legs, hips, pelvis or abdomen carry higher risk. Signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) include leg pain and swelling. Prevention methods include blood thinners, leg exercises and compression stockings. The aim of the project was to accurately assess risks of venous thromboembolism during surgery and ensure proper preventative measures to decrease incidents and enhance recovery.
Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clotting disorder. causes of this is age above 60 yrs. cancer , obesity, prolonged standing etc. diagnostic evaluation of this doppler study, CT, MRI, etc. medical management of this blood thinner, like aspirin, stockings etc
Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot gets lodged in an artery in the lung, blocking blood flow to part of the lung.
Blood clots most often start in the legs and travel up through the right side of the heart and into the lungs. This is called DVT.
However, PE sometimes can occur without any evidence of DVT.
thrombosis in a vein lying deep below the skin, especially in the legs, often precipitated by immobility during illness or long-distance travel.
A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs.
This condition is serious because blood clots can loosen and lodge in the lungs.
Leg pain or swelling may occur, but there may be no symptoms.
Treatments include medication and use of compression stockings.

Phlebitis describes veins that are inflamed, which are visibly red and painful. Phlebitis is also referred to as thrombophlebitis, superficial thrombophlebitis, or superficial venous thrombosis.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly the legs.[2][a] Symptoms may include pain, swelling, redness, or warmth of the affected area. About half of cases have no symptoms. Complications may include pulmonary embolism, as a result of detachment of a clot which travels to the lungs, and post-thrombotic syndrome.[2][3]
Risk factors include recent surgery, cancer, trauma, lack of movement, obesity, smoking, hormonal birth control, pregnancy and the period following birth, antiphospholipid syndrome, and certain genetic conditions. Genetic factors include deficiencies of antithrombin, protein C, and protein S, and factor V Leiden mutation. The underlying mechanism typically involves some combination of decreased blood flow rate, increased tendency to clot, and injury to the blood vessel wall.

An aortic dissection is a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery (aorta).Aortic rupture is when all the layers of the aorta wall tear, causing blood to leak out from the aorta often due to a large aortic aneurysm that bursts. This will stop blood being pumped around the body and is life threatening. Ideally an aortic aneurysm will be repaired before a rupture can occur.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Process of maintaining blood in a fluid, clot – free state in normal vasculature and rapidly forming a
localized haemostatic plug at the site of vascular injury
The pathologic opposite of haemostasis is thrombosis

13. Superficial thrombosis is known as thrombophlebitis or phlebitis a clot that develop on surface of
skin.
Deep vein thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot in one of the deep vein of the body usually
leg.
Deep Venous Thrombosis Lower extremity DVT usually begins in the calf and propagates
proximally to the popliteal vein, femoral vein, and iliac veins.
Leg DVT is about 10 times more common than upper extremity DVT, which is often precipitated by
placement of pacemakers, internal cardiac defibrillators, or indwelling central venous catheters.
Superficial venous thrombosis usually presents with erythema, tenderness, and a “palpable cord.”
Patients are at risk for extension of the thrombosis to the deep venous system.

21. When can thrombosis formed?
While a clot can form after any type of procedure, like any major surgery, particularly on
your abdomen, pelvis, hips, or legs.
Some specific operations that come with a high risk for DVT and PE are:
• Knee or hip replacement
• Peripheral and coronary artery bypass
• Surgery to remove cancer
• Neurosurgery
• Surgery on your abdomen
• Other major operations
22. Why It Happens?
Surgeries raise risk for DVT because staying in bed for long periods of time while recovery. When
patient stop moving, blood flows more slowly in deep veins, which can lead to a clot. Other
surgery–related factors that may increase risk for blood clots include:
How extensive or long the procedure was
The way you had to be positioned during surgery
The type of anesthesia used
most likely to form a clot between 2 and 10 days after surgery.
23. During Surgery
Sometimes, the surgery itself can cause a blood clot. Long procedures when lying on the operating
table for many hours allow blood to settle and pool, which makes it easier to clot. Major surgeries
like cancer and heart bypass operations tend to take longer, which is one reason they’re higher risk
for DVT.
Tissue, debris, fat, or collagen could get released into blood system during an operation, making
blood thicker around those particles. Blood clots can also form if veins are damaged during an
operation.
Surgeries that involve scraping or cutting into a bone, such as a hip replacement, may release
substances known as antigens. These antigens trigger body's immune system and can lead to clots.
24. greater chance of DVT after surgery when:
• Smoke
• Had DVT in the past
• Are overweight or obese
• Have close family members with DVT
• Are pregnant
• Have a disorder that affects your blood or veins
• Are older
• Use certain medicines, including birth control and hormone therapy
• Have specific types of cancer
25. signs of DVT or PE:
Pain or tenderness in your leg
• Swelling or warmth in your leg
• Red or discolored skin on your leg
• Veins that stick out
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing up blood
• Sudden chest pain
• Painful breathing
36. How to Help Prevent DVT Before Surgery?
Quit Smoke.
Work on getting rid of any extra pounds you're carrying, too.
Try to loss weight.
37. How to Lower Chances for DVT After Surgery?
Anticoagulants. They make it harder for your blood cells to stick together and form clots. You take
them by mouth, shot, or through an IV
Simple movements. These can improve blood flow. Depending on the type of surgery you had, your
care team might suggest gentle exercises like:
o Leg lifts while you're in bed
o Moving your feet in a circle or up and down about 10 times an hour while you’re sitting in a chair or
lying in bed
o Squeezing your calf and thigh muscles regularly
Elastic compression stockings
59. Abstract
Objectives: This project's aim was to ensure that venous thromboembolism assessment was
performed accurately, and that adequate prophylaxis was followed-up, resulting in a decrease in the
incidence of venous thromboembolism postoperatively and enhancing recovery after surgery.
Conclusions: Overall the project achieved a significant improvement in evidence-based practice in
the prevention of VTE, implemented in two wards. Sustaining best practice should be planned for
the future.
