to Improve
Teaching and Learning
at K-State
An LMS data portal contains select data about the
instance of the learning management system (in
this case, K-State Online, powered by Instructure’s
Canvas LMS).
• Course Availability Dates: How early prior to the start-
of-term are online courses available, and should more of
them be available sooner for learner orientation and
priming?
• Sections: What are use cases for restricted section
access based on defined dates? How important is it for
learners to select their own sections (via self-
enrollment) in respective learning sequences?
• Assignments: Ungraded assignments are used for
formative assessments to support learning. Should
these be used more often?
• Media creation assignments require higher-level and
collaborative skills of learners. Should these be
assigned more often?
• What time design elements should be applied to
online learning assignments, and which are most
effective in which contexts?
• Learner submissions may be human_graded or
auto_graded or not_graded: Which approach is the
most effective and in which learning contexts? How
many attempts are usually made on multi-attempt
assignments? Why?
• Quizzes: What is the average value of a quiz? What do
learners have to do for the earned grades?
• Grading: How quickly are grades assigned, and how
information-rich are the feedback types?
• Discussion Boards: What are the workflow states of
discussion boards, and which types (active or undefined)
are the most effective for teaching and learning?
• Language and Labeling: Is the language used in
assignments, in conversations (in-LMS emails), and other
spaces the right language to use for the teaching and
learning context?

How important is it for learners to select their own sections (via self- enrollment) in respective learning sequences? • Assignments: Ungraded assignments are used for formative assessments to support learning. Should these be used more often? • Media creation assignments require higher-level and collaborative skills of learners. Should these be assigned more often? • What time design elements should be applied to online learning assignments, and which are most effective in which contexts? • Learner submissions may be human_graded or auto_graded or not_graded: Which approach is the most effective and in which learning contexts? How many attempts are usually made on multi-attempt assignments? Why? • Quizzes: What is the average value of a quiz?
