Postcolonist
feminism
 Postcolonial feminist theory argues that
native, colonized women are not all the
same and should be considered individually
as opposed to generalized because it
reveals that they are not all morally good
and oppressed, and when they are
oppressed, it is not under the same
methods.
 This theory is demonstrated in Salman
Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children because the
novel operates to emphasize the agency of
female’s regardless of their morals, often
showing that they are able to wield power
over those in charge even within the
patriarchy.
Midnight's Children is a 1981
novel by author Salman Rushdie. It
portrays India's transition from British
colonial rule to independence and
the partition of India. It is considered
an example
of postcolonial, postmodern,
and magical realist literature.
The story is told by its chief
protagonist, Saleem Sinai, and is set
in the context of actual historical
events. The style of preserving history
with fictional accounts is self-reflexive.
 Naseem is kept behind perforated sheet even
she has to be examined by doctor .
 When doctor feels shocked and ansks her
father about how to examine her without
looking at her, he is told by Naseem’s father
that,
 “You europe returned forget such things,
doctor sahib! my daughter is a discent Girl it
goes without saying she doesn’t flaunt her
body under the noses of strange man.You will
understand that you can not be permitted to
see her. No, not in any circumstances
accordingly I have required her to be positioned
behind the sheet . She stands there like a good
girl.”
After getting married to Ahmed Sinai
Mumtaz is asked to change her name .
“Change your name”Ahmed Sinai said.
Time for a fresh start.Throw and her
Nadir Khan out of the window. I’ll choose
you a new name Amina.Amina Sinai
you’d like that ? “Whatever you say
husband”.
Here we discover the devotion of
Mumtaz towards her husbandAhmed.
Character of Amina
Jamaila the third generation
of the novel also put behind
the PURDAH.
Whenever she performs in
public she wears white silk
chadar curtain or veil.
Character of Jamaila
In the time when we had female
prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Who ruled over a country.
We face this type of situation of
females in the novel.
Salman talks about three different
female generation and same
situation.
Generation changed over the years
but the situation of female remains
same in the novel.
