7. Revolution 2020
● Genre – Fiction, politics, romance.
● The word revolution comes from the Latin word ‘
revolvere’.
● It means a change in the way a country is
governed, usually by a different political system
and often using violence and war.
● Revolution-2020 happens in three stages in
Chetan Bhagat’s novel and is listed as love,
ambition and corruption in the novel of
Revolution-2020.
● All these three stages are played by Gopal, Aarti
and Raghav –characters in the novel.
● Their journey starts from the sacred city of
Varanasi.
8. • Here the ambition of Gopal’s father is to
make his son an engineer but Gopal’s
passion is different.
• He meets a politician and opens a
technical institute, initiating corruption.
• Raghav is from a middle-class family and
cracks the IIT entrance test but his
passion is to be a press reporter writing
against corruption and how it has polluted
the whole education system from top to
bottom.
• Finally, the most beautiful girl friend of
his, right from school days, aspiring to
become an air hostess the daughter of the
District Magistrate (collector of Varnasi)
loves Raghav but goes for outing with
Gopal, which puzzles Gopal most of the time
as to whom she loves.
9. • The novel shows how the three stages of revolution as
love, ambition and corruption play a crucial role in the
lives of Gopal, Aarti and Raghav .
• As the plot takes the three to depths of desperation, love,
ambition and crushing disappointment, Bhagat tries to
reflect the state of India's private education that is not
just the lifeblood but sometimes the only hope for
millions of students from small towns turning their
bright eyes at an assured and uplifting future.

12. • Author Chetan Bhagat says the idea
of his latest work 'Revolution
2020' emerged because of the
rampant corruption in the education
sector which affects millions of
youth.
• The writer said his protagonists
Gopal and Raghav are intelligent
boys..one wanted to use his
intelligence to make money. One
wanted to use his intelligence to
create a revolution. The problem
was, they both loved the same girl.
13. "I am a motivation speaker now
and travel around the country.
As part of that, I visited several
small colleges and noticed the
rampant corruption in the
education sector. I thought this
affects millions of youth so I
should do something about it.
Hence, 'Revolution 2020' was
born," Chetan said.
14. • Chetan Bhagat has always been very cautious and aware
with most of the issues related to the society.
• That‟s why he always represents him through the articles
published in the newspapers.
• Bhagat writes in his article, “Many of us unfortunate
enough to be educated and emotionally invested in our
country are in pain these days.
• We see our nation being plundered and
mismanaged by the politicians in power.
15. • Talking to India Real Time (IRT) he says,
“I saw corruption at almost every level.
While I am a capitalist at heart and I have no problems
with commercialization as such, I believe that while
it‟s okay if education becomes a profitable business,
it‟s not okay if it becomes corrupt.
You can make money…everybody makes money, but the
moment you enter into a corrupt mindset, it has
dangerous consequences –especially in education.
If you have corruption in education, you end up with
a whole generation that is not trained properly.”

recently lashed out at

saying that coaching

17. CORRUPTED EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE NOVEL
'Revolution 2020' may be an attempt to highlight the inherent corruption
rooted in India's education system and bring out the anomaly of non-
profit organisations and commercialization of education, but the
writing largely lacks the style that Bhagat has come to be known for.
• His description of a job fair where brothers who have fallen apart
compete to market their own private colleges is a laugh out loud
moment from the book.
• But the good stuff ends there.
• Gopal is contacted by a politician who wishes to build an engineering college on the highly
valuable land that Gopal's family owns.
• Gopal agrees to the deal, and joins the system of corruption in India in order to build the
college with the politician's black money.
• He is tired of giving white envelopes to officials but has no other choice.
18. 'Revolution 2020' disappoints simply because Bhagat is
the author of '5 Point Someone' that had sharp humour
to lace a cracking story.
A lot is expected from an author who is said to have
not just nudged millions of youngsters from their iPods
into reading but also given a face to the average
Indian student buried under parental expectations.
As a book, 'Revolution 2020' is average and lacks the
street smart style Bhagat is known for.
The language has degenerated into clipped monologue.
It is dramatic in a garish way, idealistic without the
backing of reason and sadly self indulgent.
If it nails one thing, it is the systemic corruption in
the education system but pity that the pointless love
story gets in the way of what could have been a great
read.
