Summer in Calcutta A Feministic, Autobiographical and Psychoanaytical discuss...ijtsrd
This paper attempts to analyze the feminist tones in the poetry of Indian English writer and poet, Kamala Das, particularly focusing on the expression and problematization of gender roles in her 1965 poetry collection, Summer in Calcutta. It argues that her gendered identity manifests itself in her poetic style and aesthetic, wherein she questions the patriarchal expectations of gender ”“ of women rooted in immanence and domesticity and of men rooted in transcendence and the public sphere. The custom of arranged marriage, domestic emotional abuse, confinement to the private sphere of domesticity, and daunting standards of feminine beauty, are some of the gendered expectations in the Indian woman’s experience that Das’ poetry interrogates. The various themes that include feminine approach, man woman relationships, Love, lust and different threads of human life which bind two opposite sexes in one relationship. This journey in her works depict all sensory experiences which have a definite bridge between man and woman. Her writing is not only a reflection of the real society but her work gives an insight knowledge of man woman relationships psychology also. “The Prisoner” opens on 21st December, 6:58 am outside the front gate of Karachi Central prison. The cold weather also reflects the cold command of the culprits, corrupt police officers against the dutiful and dauntless ones, bloody big guns and the silly state and hellish home minsters. The tough duty hours, the sense of never being able to relax, the pressure of politicians and the big guns of ruling party have bastardized the honest police officers.

The Monster in Patriarchy: A review in Amma Darko’s Beyond the Horizon, The H...AJHSSR Journal
Women are not supposed to speak in typical traditional and patriarchal societies. While their
husbands address them, they must remain silent to the end of the talk and execute what they are told with no
complain and restraint. Women are therefore assigned roles which make them citizens of second zone and living
at the margin of society. Cultural and traditional norms of their different community allow their desires being
ignored and put aside. Women face subordination, oppression and abuses of all kind all over the time and have
to cope with them. This is the true reality of women in patriarchal societies depicted in novels. One of these
female writings is found in Amma Darko’s novels. Amma Darko’s narrated involvement in the women’s cause
throws up further debates on the role of the female writer in the reshaping of society in terms of gender
inequalities. The present paper reviews the novelist’s radical perspective in Beyond the Horizon (1995), The
Housemaid (1998) and Faceless (2010). Men presented as being monsters in these tree novels are women’s
most feared enemies to combat and slain. The paper also critically explores male dominance as a cultural feature
that maintains women under yoke and submission.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Topic Themes of Moth Smoke
Moth Smoke:
Moth Smoke is a novel written by Mohsin Hamid, published in 2000. It tells the story of
Darashikoh Shezad, a banker in Lahore, Pakistan, who loses his job, falls in love with his best
friend's wife, and plunges into a life of drugs and crime. It uses the historical trial of the liberal
Mughal prince Darashikoh by his brother Aurangzeb as an allegory for the state of Pakistan at
the time of the 1998 nuclear tests.
Themes of Moth Smoke:
Following are some of the themes that are most prominent in the novel Moth Smoke.
• Desire
The novel Moth Smoke, set in Lahore revolves around three main characters. The story
is heart and soul capturing. We find a desire for power, greed, lust and temptations or
pleasure in the characters. In the achievement of these desires there is an essence of
unfaithfulness found in the characters. Unfaithfulness to the different facets of life
about which the average Lahori is not unfamiliar with. The most interesting and
appealing thing about the novel is probably the fact that each character plays a central
role. The novel is like a big jigsaw puzzle with each piece an integral part of the whole.
On a deeper level, this novel is neither of realistic motivation nor a photograph of
Pakistan's decadent society .It's central metaphor is borrowed from Urdu poetry, is of
the moth's love and desire for the flame which will consume it. Towards the end, Hamid
deftly replaces this stagnant image with a gruesome depiction of a lizard dinning on a
moth the candle has spared. It's a crisp summary of his concern with the workings of
obsession ,and the lust for power.
2. • Class division in a society
Mohsin Hamid has made class divisions on the basis of his own imaginative powers. The
first group which is also referred to as the masses are put in to the category of large and
sweaty. The second group is much smaller but its member practice a great control over
the environment and is coned as the term elite. In the novel, the distinction is made on
the basis of control of an important resources "air conditioner". The elites have
managed to recreate for themselves the living standards of life. Their residence is in an
artificially cooled world. There are no working class heroes in moth smoke .Although
Daru's boy servant, Manucci , comes close to being a more likable model than his
employer.
• Desire, Decadence and death in Lahore
The selection of "Lahore" in the novel is a realistic touch. The reason for selection of
Lahore is to reveal a very close to reality account of the lives of the contemporary elite
class. The opinions of the masses and elite in regards to issues like poverty, joblessness ,
crime , foreign relation and their nuclear issue have all been highlighted.
Moth smoke begins with a story from Mughal India presenting the encounter of the
Emperor Shah Jahan with a Sufi saint who predicts the war of succession that will make
a ruler out of one of his sons and death of the other one. Darashikohshikoh Shikoh and
Aurangzeb are the friends separated by capital and class in contemporary Pakistan.
Mumtaz, lover of one and wife of the other is the novel's catalyst.
• Power, Greed and Lust
Moth smoke is set in Lahore and revolves around three main characters. It captures the
heart and soul of the second generation of an independent Pakistan. It's a story about
power, greed, lust and infidelity. The main thrust of the novel, for all its social desire is
towards timeless tragedy: a drama of crime, punishment and redemption. Daru , the
little man and Aurangzeb's childhood friend falls in a passionate affair with Mumtaz. He
is undone when society, through scheme of corrupt wealthy Aurangzeb accuses him of
the hit and run killing of a child. Though he insists Aurangzeb himself is responsible.
Mumtaz steps in at the climax with a new revenge and twist.
Mumtaz is wife of one of Lahore's wealthy man, Aurangzeb. She is also a journalist. She
acts as a pseudonym of Zulfikar Manto and portrayed the urban low life of Pakistan.
Mumtaz is given translations of collection of Manto's stories by Aurangzeb. This is an
irony on elite class who feels pride on their ignorance of Urdu .Mumtaz shah in Moth
smoke represents the most liveliest and progressive face of the otherwise decaying
3. Pakistani middle class. Hamid's Mumtaz appears in a definite light. She protests against
what she and many other women experience as a denial.
• Jealousy
Jealousy factor is seen in Daru`s character throughout the novel. Daru is jealous of his
best friend , Ozi, because of his money, fame and his wife. He is status conscious and
thinks only rich people can live happily. He belongs to middle class while Ozi belongs to
the elite class. Ozi enjoy all the luxuries of life and fulfill all his desires. But Daru depends
on Ozi’s father for financial help and even to get a job. He cannot even afford to pay his
electricity bills. This makes Daru jealous of Ozi at the very beginning of the novel and he
wants to have everything Ozi has even his wife.
• Unemployment:
One of the major themes of the novel is unemployment which is the main root of all the
other happenings in the novel. Mohsin Hamid has shown the problem of unemployment
in Pakistani society and its reasons and effects very vividly. Daru is an educated person
but he needs to give bribe or an important person like Uncle Khurram’s reference to get
a job. He loses his job and becomes unemployed just because of a small mistake. This
unemployment and need of money makes Daru a drug dealer and robber. Murad
Badshah, who is an M.A, also has to become a rickshaw deriver because he cannot get a
job. The diverse effects which unemployment can have on one’s life are realistically
shown in this novel.
• Moth smoke :
The title of the book Moth smoke is one of the major themes.it refers to what remains
when moth is seduced by the candle flame. It is also used as a metaphor for Daru
moving towards his own destruction and fall, pulled by the temptation of sex, drugs and
easy money.
The young protagonist of novel, Daru loses his job at a multi-national bank in which he
works. He loses his self-esteem . Eventually the ethics leave him and he falls in love with
his best friend Ozi's wife, Mumtaz who come back from the United States. Daru presents
himself as the moth whose wings get singed in love. Hence the title of the novel. The
moth smoke depicts the social norms of Pakistan’s elite class which is the richest and
the most respected but the most corrupt and inhumane. The sad thing about the book is
that it is a doomsday book.it holds out no hope and like the moths dancing around the
flame that will eventually kill.
