of razors
Balance of Razor
WHAT IS MENT BY THE BALANCEOF A RAZOR ?
The balance of a razor refers to the relative weight and length of the
blade as compared with that of the handle. A razor is properly
balanced when the weight of the blade is equal to that of the handle.
Why is proper balance of the razor important ?
Proper balance of razor means greater ease in shaving
Of what materials are razor handles made ?
Razor handles are made of bone, hard rubber or plastics.
What conditions will wrap a plastic or hard rubber
handle; how can this condition be corrected ?
Atmospheric conditions may sometimes wrap the handle so that the
edge of the razor will strike it on closing. Moist or dry heat may be
used to straighten out the handle.
To what degree of tightness should the razor
blade be riveted to the handle ?
The razor blade should not be so tightly riveted to the handle that it
cannot be moved with ease, nor should it be so loosely riveted that it
moves by its own weight.
Grind of Razor
What is meant by the grind of a razor ?
The grind of razor represents the shape of the blade after it has been
ground over a stone.
1.)Name three common types of razor grinds;
2.)Which type do most barbers prefer ?
1. The full concave, half concave and wedge grind. 2.) The full
concave grind.
Describe the cross-sectional view of the 1) full
concave grind;
2) Half concave grind; 3) wedge grind.
1) The full concave grind is generally prefered by most barbers. It
presents a hollow appearance when observed between the back
and edge of the razor, being slightly thicker between the hollow
part and the extreme edge.
2) The half concave grind has less hollowness than the full concave.
There will not be more thickness between the concave and the
extreme edge of the razor.
3) The wedge grind has no hollowness or concavity, both sides of
the blade forming a sharp angle at the extreme edge of the razor
TEMPERING OF RAZOR
What is meant by tempering of a
razor ?
Tempering the razor involves a special heat
treatment given by the manufacturer.
Which qualities are imparted to
razors by proper tempering ?
Properly tempered razors have the correct
degree of hardness necessary for a good
cutting edge.
Name three types of razor
tempers. Which type do most
barber prefer ?
Hard, soft and medium tempers. The medium
temper is preferred by most barbers.
STRAIGHT RAZORS
The straight razor is an important implement used in
shaving the face . Only the highest quality razor
should be selected for the barber’s use.
Why should the barber’s kit include several high
grade razors ?
Should one razor become unfit for use , an
immediate replacement will be available. Besides,
razors receive less wear and better care when
they are changed regularly.
What are two best guides for selecting good
razors?
1. Consult with reliable company or salesman who
can recommend the type of razor best suited to
the barber’s work.
2. Consult with more experienced barber’s as to
which razors they have found best for shaving.
SIZES AND STYLES OF
RAZORS
How is the size of a razor measured ?
It is measured by the length and width of the razor.
Which four razor widths are available.
Which one do most barbers prefer?
Widths come in 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8 of an inch. The
5/8 of an inch is perferred by most barbers.
Describe the style of a razor ?
The style of a razor refers to its shape and design. A
modern style razor has a straight, parallel back and
edge, a round heel, a square point and a flat or slightly
round handle.
Why should the barber round off the
sharp point of a razor ?
To prevent scratching the skin in shaving.
FINISHES OF RAZORS
What is meant by the finish of a
razor ? Name three types of razor
finishes.
The finish of a razor refers to the appearance of its
surface. There are three types of finishes: a) plain steel,
b) crocus (polished steel) and metal-plated (nickel or
silver)
Which type of razor finish do most barber
prefer? Why?
Crocus (polished steel) finish. It usually last longer and
does not show any signs of rusting.
Why are metal-plated razors undesirable?
They wear off quickly and often hide a poor quality of
steel.
What kind of care preserves the life of
the razor?
Razors will maintain their cutting quality if care is taken
to prevent corrosion of the extremely fine edge. After
use, they should be stropped and a little castor oil
applied over the cutting edge. Be careful not to drop the
razor as the blade may be damaged.

What is a hone ?
It is a solid block composed of abrasive
material and used for sharpening
cutting implements.
Name and give examples of two
types of hones. How is each used
1) Natural hones such as the water hone and
the Belgian hone, derived from natural
rock deposits. These hones are usually used
wet with either water or lather.
2) Synthetic hones such as the Swaty hone and
the carborundum hone are manufactured
products. These hones can be used dry, or
a lather can be spread over them before
use.
Hones
1.)Describe the
water hone.
2.)How is its
cutting surface
developed ?
Water hones is a
natural hone usually
imported from
Germany. It is a slow
cutting hone having a
grey or darkish yellow
appearance.
Accompanying the
water hone is a small
piece of slate of the
same texture, called a
rubber. As the rubber
is applied over the
water hone moistened
with water, a proper
cutting surface is
developed. Care must
be taken when using
the rubber on the
water hone not to
work a bevel into the
hone.
Hones• Describe the
Belgian hone
• How is it used?
Belgian hone is a natural
hone cut out of rock
formation found in
Belgium. It is a slow
cutting hone but a little
faster than the water hone.
The upper surface of the
hone is light yellow and
the bottom portion is dark
red.
Lather or water is
generally applied to the
hone while being used.
What is the
advantage of the
synthetic hone
Synthetic hones are faster cutting hones than the
natural hone
Describe the
carborundum hone
It is a synthetic hone produced in the United
States. The barber has a choice of several
types, ranging from a slow cutting hone to a
fact cutting hone. It can be used dry, or lather
may be spread over its surface before use.
WHAT KIND OF CARE
PRESERVES THE LIFE OF
THE HONE ?
If the hone is very rough or filled with fine steel
particles, use water and pumice stone to remove the
steel particles and to keep it in good condition.
When wet honing is done, the hone should always be
wiped dry after each usage. This aids in cleaning the
hone and also wipes away tiny particles of steel that
adhere to its cutting surface.

STROPS
Strops are used to keep razors in good
working condition .
Various kinds and qualities of strops are
available. The barber should select the better
grade strop and use it according to the
manufacturer’s instructions
What are the qualities of a good strop?
A good strop is made of durable and flexible
material, has the proper texture and thickness
and shows a smooth finished surface.
Describe a typical barber strop; From which material are strops
made?
1.)Most barber strops are made in pairs, one side
being leather and the other side being canvas. 2.)
Leather strops are made out of cowhide,
horsehide, pigskin and synthetic leather. Canvas
strops are made out of woven linen or silk.
Why should strops be given a hand finish ? How often should this be
done ?
A hand finish keeps the surface of the strop
smooth and in readiness for stropping. A daily
hand finish is desirable.

Describe two methods for giving a hand finish to a
Russian strop.
1. One method frequently used is as
follows:
2. Rub dry pumice stone over the
strop in order to remove the outer
nap and develop a smooth surface
3. Rub stiff lather into the strop.
4. Rub dry pumice stone over the
strop until smooth
5. Clean off the strop.
6. Rub fresh stiff lather into the
strop.
7. Rub a smooth glass bottle several
times over the strop until a
smooth surface is developed.
Another method of breaking in a
Russian strop is to omit the pumice
stone. Instead, stiff lather is rubbed
into the strop with the aid of a
smooth glass bottle or with the palm
of the hand.
Why are Russian shell strop
preferred
They require little , if any , breaking in and tend to retain a
smooth surface.
The horsehide strop does not
readily impart the proper cutting
edge to the razor.
Honing
and
Stropping
• Honing Defined; How to hold razor;
How to Stoke Razor; Testing Razor
Edge; Care of Hone.
• Stropping Defined: Technique; Care
of Strops; Stropping During Shaving.
HONING AND STROPPING
Honing and stropping are important preparatory steps before
shaving a customer. No matter how good a razor may be at the time
of purchase, it needs continual honing and stropping to keep it in
good condition. As the razor is used , its edge wears off. Hence, the
need for proper honing and stropping before the razor can be used
again for shaving the beard.
HONING
To acquire the correct technique, honing of the razor is first
performed on a slow-cutting hone. Speed and ease of moving the
hand and wrist come only after considerable practice in holding and
stroking the razor edge. For best results, keep the hone and razor at
ordinary room temperature..
What is he proper way to learn how to hone and strop razors in a
barber shop?
By continued study, practice and experience.
What is accomplished by proper honing?
The razor acquires a perfect cutting edge.
Describe the manner of stroking a razor on a hone.
Hold the razor flat on the hone at the proper angle and use smooth,
even, diagonal strokes across the hone for both sides of the blade.
Honing
Proper Honing of a
Razor
Explain the proper manner of holding razor for honing.
Grasp razor handle in the right hand, as follows:
1. Rest index finger on top of the side part of the shank.
2. Rest ball of thumb at the joint.
3. Place second finger back of the razor near edge of the shank.
4. Fold remaining fingers around the handle to permit easy turning
over of the razor.
Describe the movements used in honing.
Stroke the razor blade to the left diagonally across the hone, from the
heel to point towards the edge. Turn the razor over on its back with
fingers in the same manner as you would roll a pencil without turning
the wrist. STROKE THE BLADE TO the right diagonally across the
hone, from the heel to the point toward the edge . From three to six
strokes each way generally does a good job.
Test razor on moistened
thumb nail, drawing it
slowly from heel to
point of razor
Magnified Razor
Edge
What are the signs of a keen edge on a
properly honed razor?
It tends to dig into the nail with a smooth steady grip.
What are the signs of a blunt razor edge?
It passes Mover the nail smoothly without any cutting power.
What are the signs of a coarse razor edge?
It tends to dig into the nail with a jerky feeling
What are the signs of a rough or over honed
razor edge?
It has large teeth which stick to the nail and give a harsh
cutting feeling
What can a barber do for an over honed razor?
Draw the razor backward in a diagonal line across the
hone, using the same movement and pressure as in regular
honing. One or two strokes each way will usually remove the
rough edge. Then, the razor is honed again, being careful to
prevent overhoning .
What is the proper care of a dry hone?
Use hone as directed by manufacturer. After being used, rub its
surface with water and pumice stone, then wipe clean and keep
covered.
What is the proper care of a wet hone?
Use hone as directed by manufacturer . After being used, keep
its surface clean , smooth and covered.

lesson
Stropping
Once the razor edge has been properly
honed, the barber will be able to give
many shaves simply by stropping it
before and during the shaving process
What is the purpose of
stropping the razor after
honing?
To smooth the razor’s edge.
How does stropping differ
from honing
The stroking of the razor blade in
stropping is just the reverse of honing.
Which side of the strop is to
be used for a freshly honed
razor?
The leather side of the strop.
At other times, is it advisable to use
the canvas first, then the leather side
of the strop?
Yes .
How should the razor be held for
stropping?
Hold the razor in the right hand with the fingers
wrapped around the handle and shank..
Where should the first stroke be
started?
Start about two-thirds down the strop.
Describe the movements used in
stropping.
1. Place the razor flat against the strop with the back
towards the barber about two-third down the strop.
2. Draw the razor towards the barber.
3. Turn the razor over on its back with the fingers.
4. Draw the razor away from the barber.
5. Repeat these movements until razor is properly
stropped
WHICH FINGERS ARE USED IN ROLLING AND
TURNING THE RAZOR IN THE HAND
The thumb and next two fingers of right hand.
How much pressure should be applied in
stropping?
Bear down with enough pressure to feel a firm drag at the
point and heel of the razor.
How is the razor edge tested after stropping?
Touch the razor edge lightly over the cushion of the thumb.
What Is the signs of a smooth, sharp razor
edge?
It produces a keen, drawing sensation.
What is the signs of a dull razor edge?
It produces no drawing sensation.
1. How can the barber recognize a wiry
cutting edge?
2. how should the barber correct this
condition?
1. The razor edge produces a rough, disagreeable feeling upon
testing.
2.ADDITIONAL STROPPING ON THE LEATHER STROP IS
REQUIRED.
HOW SHOULD THE BARBER CORRECT A
RAZOR EDGE THAT PRODUCES A SMOOTH
FEELING UPON TESTING?
Strop razor again on canvas strop, followed by a few more
strokes on the leather strop.
Care of Strops
What is the purpose of stropping the razor
before shaving?
To smooth and shape the edge of the razor into a keen cutting
edge,
How can the strop be kept clean and smooth?
Apply lather or soap to the strop, then wipe it clean to remove
accumulated grit.
What is used to remove accumulated grit
from leather strops?
Rub lather into the strop, then remove lather and grit with
back side of a shear blade or similar implement.
In what way should the strops be kept.
Either suspended or attached to a swivel, or laid flat.
Stropping During Shaving
When is the razor stropped during the
process of shaving?
1. Before movement no. 1 of the shave.
2. Before movement no. 6 of the shave.
3. Before the second time over in the shave.
4. Before outlining the haircut.

Face Shaving
Face shaving is one of
the basic services that
rightfully belongs to the
barber shop. The barber
who learns how to give a
good shave is a valuable
asset to the shop
Customers who are
fully satisfied with their
first shave are likely
prospects for regular
shaves, as well as for more
expensive services such as
haircuts, facials or scalp
treatments. To gain
prestige and profits, the
barber should pay more
attention to his “shave

GIVING A COMPLETE SHAVE
• The barber is now ready to begin shaving.
Proper coordination of both hands makes for
better and safer shaving . While the right hand
holds and strokes the razor, the fingers of the
left hand assist in stretching the skin tightly
around the part being shaved. A tight skin has
the advantage that it allows the beard to be
cut more easily. To prevent slipping, the
fingers of the left hand must be kept dry at all
times.
• Shaving Area # 1 Free Hand Stroke.
• Barber stands on right side of chair. Gently
turn customer’s face to the left . With second
finger of the left hand, remove lather from
hairline. Hold razor as for a free hand stroke.
Use long gliding diagonal strokes with the
point of the razor in the lead. Beginning at
hairline on right side., shave downward
towards the jawbone shave right side of face
to the corner of the mouth.
• Shaving Area #2 Back Hand Stroke.
• Remaining in the same position, wipe razor
clean on neck strip. Hold the razor as for a
back hand stroke; use a diagonal stroke with
the point of the razor in the lead. Shave all of
the beard on the right side of the face up to
the point of the chin.
