2. Haryana is a state in northwest India between 27o 37' to
30o 35' latitudes and between 74o 28' to 77o 36' longitudes
and with an altitude between 700 to 3600 feet above sea level.
It was carved out off the Indian state of Punjab on 1st Nov.
1966. It is bounded by Uttar Pradesh in east, Punjab in west,
Himachal Pradesh in north and Rajasthan in south.
River Yamuna acts as the eastern division for administrative
purpose. Haryana state stretches for about 44212 sqKms
with just 1.37 percent of total geographical area and less than
2 percent of India's population. Since it surrounds Delhi in the
northern, western and southern sides, a large area of state is
included in National Capital Region (N.C.R.).

4. Urbanisation refers to general increase in population
and amount of industrialisation of a settlement. It is a process
that leads to growth of cities due to industrialization and
economic development and also leads to specific changes in
specialization labour divison and human behaviour .
Urbanisation symbolizes the movement of people from rural
to urban areas . According to Anderson, urbanization is not a
one way process but it has a two way process. It involves
not only movement from villages to cities but change from
agricultural occupations to business, trade, service and a
change in the migrants attitudes, believes, values and
behavioural pattern.
Trewartha (1969) considers urbanization as a cyclical
process through which the nations pass as they evolve from
agrarian to industrial societies.
Kingslay Davis (1965) defines urbanization as a
progressive concentration of population in urban units.

8. HARYANA LITERACY
• Literacy and level of education are basic indicators of the level of
development achieved by a society. Spread of literacy is generally
associated with important traits of modern civilization such as
modernization, urbanization, industrialization, communication
and commerce. Literacy forms an important input in overall
development of individuals enabling them to comprehend their
social, political and cultural environment better and respond to it
appropriately. Higher levels of education and literacy lead to a
greater awareness and also contributes in improvement of
economic and social conditions. It acts as a catalyst for social
upliftment enhancing the returns on investment made in almost
