2. Popular music began in the US in the 1930s with a lively new music called
swing. Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra sang with big swing bands and later
became solo stars.

The main form of popular music is pop itself. Pop bands usually have singers,
guitarists, keyboard players, and percussionists.

3. Melody, harmony, rhythm and song structure reflect pop music's cultural
roots, shed light on the creative music process, and reveal music's relationship
to technology and commerce.
Although technology has changed the ways in which we obtain our pop music,
this genre of music remains as vibrant today as when it started in the 1950’s
(with the likes of Elvis Presley and Cliff Richards). Pop is still well liked with
youth culture in todays society.

4. Pop is recognisable and is typified by its use of the hook. The hook technique
is a short, vocal catch-phrase or instrumental motif within the song. The aim
is to capture the public's ear, rather than to educate or alienate. Vocal hooks
are often simple, easy to remember and repetitive, usually running through the
song as a form of chorus.

Pop artists commonly wear bright, flamboyant casual clothing connoting
youth and vitality. Music videos typically are vibrant and use multi-functional
digital platforms and technology including CGI, Dolby stereo sound systems
to enhance digital quality of the music. Music videos have a wide appeal to a
mass target audience mainly of teenagers and young adults roughly around
13-30 years old.

environment is youthful and lively.
