2. POP
• Pop is short for popular, and it's remained the defining term for the ever-changing music favoured by
the public.
• Although this term was not used until the middle of the 20th century, pop music as such can be traced
by a few decades before that.
• Songs of music hall were considered the first real pop songs, (music hall being a place of
entertainment before TV) written by professionals and widely performed for audiences that dates
back to the Victorian era.
• Curiously, pop music charts as such didn't exist until 1952, when the first Top Twenty was recorded. It
came at an interesting time, as "teenagers" really came into being.
• The Beatles influenced a generation (more than one, really) with their melodies and harmonies, and
that was apparent in the 1970s
• Along with the Beatles, there was a huge wave of several styles of pop, from the Glam Rock of T. Rex to
the raw fire of punk.

4. THE CONTROVERSY IN POP MUSIC
The only controversy that has been seen in pop music is though the pop music videos. There have been so
many pop music videos that have sparked controversy in the media and to the public and a lot of the
comments are delivered negatively.
"All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring 'Sia' self states,"
Tweeted the Australian singer Sia after the video for her single Elastic Heart was slated upon release last year.
"My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody."
The video, which saw the 12-year-old Ziegler and 28-year-old LaBeouf cage-fighting in a skin-coloured leotard and
pants, was one of the more controversial videos of the year, with critics claiming it had paedophilic overtones.
This was a comment from Sia’s Elastic Heart music video that was released January last year. Many people were
unclear about Sia’s intentions throughout the whole video but the majority of the public were uncomfortable with the
video and believed it was paedophilic of Shia to dance with Maddie in that way.
Sia soon makes it clear however that her intentions were not to cause this kind of controversy, she only trying to
create a emotional and creative music video that would fit best with her music
