A political party is a
group
of people who come
together to contest
election
and hold power in the
government. They agree
on
some policies and
programmes for the
society
Types of Political Parties
There are three types of
political parties :
1.One party system
2.Two party system
3. Multi party system
4. Dominant-party system
5. Non-partisan system
1) ONE PARTY SYSTEM
One party system is a
system in which a single
political party has the right
to form the government,
usually based on the
existing constitution.
Examples of this are the
people’s republic of china
under the united front , or
the national front in
former east Germany.
2)Two party system
 Two party system is a system where two
major political parties dominate politics
within a government.
 For example in the United States,
Jamaica and Malta the sense of two
party system describes an arrangement in
which nearly all elected officials belong
to one of the two major parties, and
third parties rarely win any seats in the
legislature.
3)Multi party system
Multi partysystemis a systemin which
multiplepolitical parties have the
capacityto gain control of government
offices, separately or in coalition. It
reflects the various minority arguments
on an issue, the multiparty system
tends to divide the people into many
different factions, that the majority is
completelylost, leaving only a set of
competing minorities. In the vest
majority of
multipartysystem, numerous major
and minor political parties hold a
serious chance of receiving office, and
because they all compete, a majority
may not control the legislature,
forcing the creation of a coalition.
Brazil, Denmark, Finland, India,
Mexico, Spain, Norway, Sri lanka etc
are the examples of nations that have
useda multi party systemeffectively
in their democracies.
4)Dominant party system
Dominant partysystemis a system
where there is “a category of
parties/political organizations that have
successivelywonelection victories and
whose future defeat cannot be envisaged
or is unlikelyfor the foreseeable future”.
For example Kuomintang in the
Republic of china ,African National
Congressin SouthAfrica etc.
5)NON PARTISAN SYSTEM
Non partisan systemis a systemof
government or organizations such
that universal and periodic
elections take place without
reference to political parties. There
are two types of Non partisan
government –
De facto
De jure
Three national parties
Three national parties are –
Aamaadami party(AAP)
Bharatiya janataparty(BJP)
Indian national congress(INC)
AAP is an Indian political party formally
launched on 26 Nov 2012 and is currently
the ruling party of Delhi. It came into
existence following differences between
the activists Arvind Kejriwal and Aana
Hazara regarding whether or not to
politicise the popular India against
corruption movement that had been
demanding a Jan lok pal bill since 2011.
Hazare preferred that the movement
should remain politically unaligned
while Kajriwal felt the failure of the
agitation route necessitated a direct
political involvement.
BHARATIYA JANATAPARTY
BJP is one of the two major parties
in the Indian political system
along with Indian national
congress. As of 2015 it is the
countries largest political partyin
terms of representation in the
national parliament and the state
assembly, and it is the world
largest partyin terms of primary
membership.
Parliamentary chairperson Narendra modi
Lok sabha leader Narendra modi
Rajya sabha leader Arun jaitley
President Amit shah
Congress
The Indian national congress
is one of two major political
parties in India .congressis
one of the largest and oldest
democratically runpolitical
parties runin the world. The
party was founded in 1885
during the British raj ; its
founders include Allan
OctavianHume , Dadabhai
Nairoji and DinshawWacha.
In the late nineteenthand early
to mid twentieth centuries ,
congressbecame a pivotal
participant in the indian
independence movement,
with over fifteen million
members and over 70
millionparticipants in its
oppositionto britishcolonial
rule in india.
Regional
parties…
• Regional parties are the parties whose main holds are
in one certain state and mostly they participate in the
elections only within that state.
• Most of these regional parties have agenda fitting
certain culture dominant within that state.
• The various regional parties are shiv sena , the akali
dal , the telegu desam , the muslim legue, the DMK
etc..
1) The Akali Dal
• It is a major political and
social organisation of the
sikh community, confined
to punjab. It succeded in
1925 in bringing the
gurudwaras under the
authority of universal adult
franchise within the
community.
2) The muslim league
 Wanted after the partition
and its strengthremained
limited to northern kerela,
some areas of tamil nadu
and up. In kerela it is
working as a major political
force ,joining withcongress
in anti communist coalitions.
 The DravidaMunnetra
Kazhagamin the state of
tamil nadu symbolises the
political strength of the
regional dravidianmovement.
Its original roots were in the
justice party(the south indian
liberal federation) which was
essentiallya non brahman
movement.
