POEM ANALYZE
“THE VILLIAN”
SYMBOL
Mean: Any object or action that represents something beyond itself; these are less
systematic and more open ended in their interpretation.
Analysis:
SYNTAX
Mean: The arrangement of words in a sentence, phrase, or clause; this refers to the
grammatical structure of words in sentences and the deployment of sentences in longer units
throughout the poem; an important element of tone.
Analysis: Setting Sentence Structure This poem is composed of one long sentence of 64
words. It made up of mainly personification and metaphors. Parts of the Poem The poem is
made up of one part with 6 stanzas. Each new stanza starts with the unintended line. Stanzas
1, 2, 5, and 6 each consist of two lines; the first line being a statement, and the following line
a description of the first. Stanzas 4 and 5 are both a single line that enhances the description
of the poem as a whole. "The Villian" by W.H. Davies The speaker of "The Villain," is the
author, W.H. Davies. The poem takes place on a farm or some sort where clouds, corn, and
animals such as cows, lambs and birds are visible. The author is on the farm taking in
everything he sees with great detailed.
IMAGERY
Mean:
Analysis: Imagery "I turned my head and saw the wind, Not far from where I stood, Dragging
the corn by her golden hair, Into a dark and lonely wood." Confusion The poem is primarily
based on personification and metaphors. The "wind" is the villain and the "corn" is the victim.
This is the most powerful image in the poem because it delivers the message that though
nature is beautiful, the world can also be a cruel and evil place. Who is the villain?
TONE
Mean: The tone of a poem is roughly equivalent to the mood it creates in the reader.
Analysis: Tone "Dragging the corn by her golden hair, Into a dark and lonely wood." The tone
of the poem overall is phlegmatic because of the speaker's explanation of the very
picturesque setting at the beginning of the poem, and yet ending the poem with a haunting
image, yet his disposition seems rather apathetic and factual.

  • 1. POEM ANALYZE “THE VILLIAN” SYMBOL Mean: Any object or action that represents something beyond itself; these are less systematic and more open ended in their interpretation. Analysis: SYNTAX Mean: The arrangement of words in a sentence, phrase, or clause; this refers to the grammatical structure of words in sentences and the deployment of sentences in longer units throughout the poem; an important element of tone. Analysis: Setting Sentence Structure This poem is composed of one long sentence of 64 words. It made up of mainly personification and metaphors. Parts of the Poem The poem is made up of one part with 6 stanzas. Each new stanza starts with the unintended line. Stanzas 1, 2, 5, and 6 each consist of two lines; the first line being a statement, and the following line a description of the first. Stanzas 4 and 5 are both a single line that enhances the description of the poem as a whole. "The Villian" by W.H. Davies The speaker of "The Villain," is the author, W.H. Davies. The poem takes place on a farm or some sort where clouds, corn, and animals such as cows, lambs and birds are visible. The author is on the farm taking in everything he sees with great detailed. IMAGERY Mean: Analysis: Imagery "I turned my head and saw the wind, Not far from where I stood, Dragging the corn by her golden hair, Into a dark and lonely wood." Confusion The poem is primarily based on personification and metaphors. The "wind" is the villain and the "corn" is the victim. This is the most powerful image in the poem because it delivers the message that though nature is beautiful, the world can also be a cruel and evil place. Who is the villain? TONE Mean: The tone of a poem is roughly equivalent to the mood it creates in the reader. Analysis: Tone "Dragging the corn by her golden hair, Into a dark and lonely wood." The tone of the poem overall is phlegmatic because of the speaker's explanation of the very picturesque setting at the beginning of the poem, and yet ending the poem with a haunting image, yet his disposition seems rather apathetic and factual.
